HONG KONG 1. HALL, Captain W.H. & BERNARD, W.D.

- The Nemesis in China, comprising History of the Late War in that Country; with an Account of the Colony of Hong Kong. London: Henry Colburn, 1848 Fourth edition. Octavo, xxix; (iii); 399 + 24 (publisher’s catalogue) + 3 plates + 4 folding maps. In the original dark green cloth, rebacked with the original spine re-laid. Includes folding map of Hong Kong island and a large folding map of the Pearl River delta to Canton. First published in two volumes in 1844, condensed to a single volume from the second edition onwards. Nemesis was the first British ocean going iron warship, launched in 1839 and used to great effect in the First Opium War. She first saw action in the Second Battle of Chuenpee on 7 January 1841 and was able to accompany the British fleet up the river to Canton given her shallow draught. The book includes chapters on the establishment

of the colony of Hong Kong and the formation of the local government as well as general comments on the new colony. A Very Good copy. [B2213] £500

2. HONG KONG. Report on Hong Kong;

report on Chusan; and minute on the British position and prospects in China, by Mr. R. Montgomery Martin. Governor Davis' despatch, dated 20 August 1844, enclosing Mr. Montgomery Martin's observations on the colony of Hong Kong; and other despatches upon the same subject. London: The House of Commons, 1857 Folio, pp 40 + two maps of Chusan. Binding sewn as issued. No covers. R. Montgomery Martin produced a most critical report on the prospects for Hong Kong within a few months of arriving in the colony to take up the position of Treasurer in 1844. Among other things he concludes in the report that there is “…no trade of any noticeable extent in Hong Kong”, and “no apparent prospect of Hong Kong ever yielding any revenue adequate to more than a small civil government”. He describes the hills as “…of a greenish hue, like a decayed Stilton cheese” and complains

about the climate, disease, mortality and sickness. Talking of the army, he says “out of 100 men, there are sometimes not more than five or six men fit for duty”. Hong Kong Governor Davis dispatched Martin’s report to London with a cover letter, also included in this document, disputing Martin’s opinions and wrote a subsequent letter refuting all Martin’s assertions and claims. The report concludes with two further documents about Chusan, written by Montgomery Martin in 1844 and 1845, extolling the virtues and benefits of establishing a trading colony at Chusan rather than Hong Kong. An important report which if it had been given more credence in London could have had a significant impact on the sustainability of the fledgling colony of Hong Kong. A fascinating read. In very good condition. Scarce. [X500] £680

PHOTOGRAPHS FROM 1906 HONG KONG TYPHOON Thirteen loose images showing the devastation wrought by the Hong Kong typhoon of 1906. The photos are 3 x 4 ¼ inches. The typhoon of September 18, 1906 was a major natural disaster, causing widespread damage with an estimated loss of life of 4,000-10,000 in Hong Kong. The HMS Phoenix was a sloop, (launched in 1895) that had seen action during the Boxer Rebellion; it capsized onto Yau Ma Tei. The “French gun boat” is the French destroyer Fronde, which collided with another vessel, killing several French sailors. A large 1908 memorial in Happy Valley cemetery to French victims from the Fronde was recently restored; it is one of the few remaining physical reminders in Hong Kong of this typhoon. The “American sailing ship” is the S.P. Hitchcock (launched in 1883). AND THE HARBOUR FROM MIDLEVELS, circa 1920

Silver gelatin printed photograph in four parts, co-joined and backed on old card. 115cm x 23.5cm (45” x 9 ¼”). Unidentified photographer. Taken from the bottom of Magazine Gap Road, close to the junction with Brewin Path and where the Peak Tram crosses. In the foreground is Kingsclere Hotel, owned by E.R. Belilos which was demolished in 1923. Below the hotel and slightly to the right is the Helena May Building which was completed in 1916. The French Consul General’s residence on Old Peak Road can be seen away to the left (Queen’s Garden is on this site today) flying two flags from the roof, surrounded by several grand private mansions. Along the waterfront the buildings of Central can be clearly seen, including Queen’s and Prince’s Buildings, the Hong Kong Club and to the right HMS Tamar with the dry dock appearing to be empty. On the crest of the hill to the right of the photograph is the British Military Hospital, one of the few buildings in this photograph still standing in 2018. The former islands of Kellett and Stonecutters can both be seen clearly in the harbour as can the tip of Tsim

detail from centre of C2635

Sha Tsui with the Kowloon Railway Station and Clock Tower but as yet no Peninsula Hotel. This photograph was taken at a time when the vegetation was high and so several landmark buildings such as Government House are hidden among the trees. Painted Veil New York: George H. Doran Company, 1925 First Edition. Octavo, pp289. Red cloth covered boards with title blind stamped to upper board and in gilt to spine. the references changed to fictitious place names. The Painted Veil is a story about Kitty Fane, trapped in a loveless marriage to a doctor, who has an affair with another man whom she eventually realises is deceiving her. It is a story of the discovery of her true self. The book has been filmed twice, most recently in 2006 starring Naomi Watts and Edward Norton. 15. THÉVENET, Jean Gaston Antoine -

Three Photograph Albums recording a visit to Hong Kong, 15th-17th April 1936 Pictorial record of a visit to Hong Kong bound uniformly into three card albums, each oblong, 33cm x 24cm. All photographs are a uniform size of 13cm x 8.3cm. In total the albums contain 196 personal photographs, presumed taken by Thévenet, and a further 12 commercial real photo postcards (these are in the second album). In addition there are numerous ephemeral items from the visit tipped into the albums. Thévenet arrived in Hong Kong aboard the NYK Line S.S. Kitano Maru which he had boarded in Melbourne on 21st March, and the first album includes a copy of a thank you letter to the ship’s captain and the menu of the final dinner aboard, the ‘Sayonara Dinner’. There are also several pages of photographs of his fellow passengers at the Farewell Dinner. The second album, which has a luggage label for the Gloucester Hotel to the front cover, contains photographs of Hong Kong harbour, the streets, the fish market and several shots from the balcony on the top floor of the Gloucester Hotel looking over the roof tops of Central. There is also a brochure for the Douglas Steamship Company promoting its coastal trips to Swatow, Amoy and Foochow and several shop receipts including Sincere Company (pyjamas $8.50), the Asia Company and the Kowloon Linen Shop (photo printing). The final album has further photographs of Hong Kong including aboard the Star Ferry with several shots of Chinese passengers travelling on the ferry, the Peak Hotel, views from the Peak and junks and sampans in the harbour. There is also some stationery from the Peak Hotel. Jean Thévenet was a Belgian journalist and traveller, born circa 1897. He undertook an extended trip round the World trip including in the South Pacific in 1934-1936 of which the visit to Hong Kong was a part. The three Hong

Kong albums are numbered 75, 76 & 77 in a sequence which presumably goes back to the beginning of his trip in 1934. An account of Thévenet’s voyage was published in the Belgian newspaper ‘La Libre Belgique’ after his return home. [B2410] £1600
