Exquisite calligraphed alphabet book

The techniques used are traditional and include Dutch gilt, pastepaper, marbled paper and block printed paper using linocuts rather than wood. Their work is astonishing and highly desirable.

Paris, Paul Ollendorff. 1895. £850/HK$9000 Lucien Métivet was a highly successful Belle Epoque poster artist and cartoonist and one of the most prominent French illustrators of the nineteenth century. Gryperl presents love in shorthand through a series of phrases, platitudes, soothing, explanations of infidelity etc. all with delicate and very amusing illustrations by Métivet.

ASHENDENE PRESS. The Wisdom of Jesus, the Son of Sirach commonly called Ecclesiasticus. This text compiled by A.D. Power from the various versions of Ecclesiasticus. One of 328 copies on large Batchelor 'Bugle' paper. Red, blue and green initial letters hand drawn by Graily Hewitt. and his assistants Ida Henstock and Helen Hinkley (who also did a great amount of work for the Pear Tree Press). Printed in Subiaco type with the shouldernotes and wood-engraved colophon printed in red. 4to., original limp orange vellum with ties, untrimmed. Chelsea, Ashendene Press. 1932. £3800/HK$40000 The Ecclesiasticus is a remarkable piece of press work by The Ashendene Press, printed after the death of Faulkner under the guidance of the great printer Gage-Cole, whose pevious triumph was the fabulous Cranach Press Hamlet. Even Hornby himself was pleased with the book: “in my humble judgment it is one of the most satisfactory of the books of the Press.” The first use of green by Hewitt for his initials since his first Ashendene work, Dante's Inferno.

The result of a serious commission from the Société des Cent Bibliophiles for an edition of Nerval's Eastern tale for which they paid 10,000 francs (£400). Lucien developed a method of combining colour and gold leaf in printing initial letters which proved problematic at first but which was staggeringly beautiful once he had conquered it for this book. One of only 125 with Gibbings remarkable ‘vanished line’ wood engravings

Tall 4to., original quarter white vellum with very attractive variant red buckram boards (usually brown), spine lettered in gilt, image of Cynthia amongst the stars and planets by Buckland Wright in gilt on upper cover, top edge gilt, others uncut. Unusually fresh and bright copy. London, Golden Cockerel Press. 1947. £1250/HK$13,000 Endymion in a quest for ideal beauty, explores woods and glades, the underworld, the depths of the sea and then the skies where he finds the ultimate object of ideal beauty in Cynthia, goddess of the moon. Buckland Wright upholds the romance and “maintained ectasy” of Keats’s great poem in his seemingly constant stream of passionate wood-engravings.

London, Golden Cockerel Press. 1951. £650/HK$7000 Seven years later after first publication, 50 ordinary copies were bound in a vellum-paper binding to raise some much needed cash. There were also 250 ordinary copies bound in cloth.

Sm. 4to, original cream linen, gilt lettering on the spine, untrimmed, in the original dust jacket. The dust jacket is slightly chipped at the top edge and lower bottom edge with very mild spotting, but it is an extraordinarily good example, the cream linen is extremely bright and fresh. Waltham Saint Lawrence, Golden Cockerel Press. 1925. £1200/HK$12,800 It is very unusual to find Samson & Delilah in a dust jacket. It was made out of brittle, acid filled paper so this remarkably clean and intact jacket is a rare survival. One of only 40 copies

Slipcase a little worn, otherwise very good., Hammer Creek Press. 1959. £600/HK$6,400 Hammer Creek is known for its immaculate masterpieces of letterpress printing in tiny editions. Beautifully conceived and printed, John Fass worked slowly to achieve perfection, hence the turtle press device.

The first edition was printed in 50 copies and the second, as here, with the wood blocks being further worked in an edition of 40 copies. A third edition of 10 copies was made up using text from the second edition and pasted images from the first edition.

John Buckland Wright produced these wood engravings for the Christmas and New Year cards for N.V. Houtindustrie in Eindhoven. The series are numbered 1 to 7 and ceased in 1940 due to the War. The wood engravings are remarkable especially the ones of industrial scenes which was not a common subject for Buckland Wright - unfortunately.

Full page of 13 developed designs for a bookplate for the Friends of the University of Brussels Library including 7 images of women in various states of attire. 3. Sketches and a main circular heraldic design of a mermaid with a deer. 4. A really good design of slightly saucy images for a special plate with notes in English by Severin’s son. From the family of Mark Severin, then a private UK collection.
