alk into Marion Buricatu’s HCA classroom on a Thursday afternoon, and you might see students learning the laws of light when pencil drawing an egg or creating collages and silhouettes using paper and boxes built from scratch. “I love taking classes with Marion,” said Rebecca B., a Fine Arts Academy student about her time in the teaching-artist’s classroom. “She has really helped me grow as an artist, giving me lots of independence.” Her mom Andrea agrees. “We have loved seeing the variety of art styles and mediums Rebecca has been exposed to, and that she has been encouraged to experiment creating while she’s enrolled in the Fine Arts Academy …,” she said. “Rebecca has thrived with Marion’s approach to teaching.”
Andrea is delighted to see how proud Rebecca (pictured above) is of what she creates in class. “Rebecca loves coming home to show us her new pieces, and often continues working on them when she comes home,” said Andrea.
Marion makes it a point to share her approach in an end-of-session overview to parents, so they are aware of the skill-building and creative process that takes place for HCA students.
“It was a joy to watch them on their artistic journey!” —
Students learn a variety of techniques during the eightweek course including the basics of drawing a human face, printmaking, silhouettes, and crosshatching techniques, as well as the art history behind them.
Marion Buricatu, HCA instructor Thank you for your generous support, which allows HCA to employ talented teachers like Marion.
“Being an artist is all about being curious about the world around you,” said Marion. “Through the Fine Arts Academy, we give students the tools to explore and indulge in their creative curiosity.”
