A Message From

Kelly Grill, Executive Director Your Arts Center…

HCA’s new tagline— for me, it is more than a catchy slogan. It is why we are here, what HCA is called to be and do— to be here for YOU. You are the reason HCA exists. You believe spaces like the HCA are important and necessary whether to simply enjoy a free outdoor concert on a summer evening or experience theater that challenges the mind and changes the heart. I hear countless stories each year about how HCA is a safe space to create— to be, belong and become. From a resident finding normalcy during a summer outdoor concert, to someone feeling safe to use their pronouns, the HCA has become a haven, a place to exhale, a space to find empathy, understanding, and encouragement.

As we join with you, slowly reemerging from the difficult two years facing our communities around the pandemic, injustice, and division, the expression of who HCA is for— our students, members, donors, and patrons, becomes more important than ever. You are the reason why people of all ages and all backgrounds can feel welcomed, accepted, and keep returning. Thank you for all you have done through your financial support and presence here. On behalf of the entire HCA board and staff, I am pleased to present the 2021 Gratitude Report, highlighting the many ways you make the arts happen here. Thank you as always for believing in this special place, this creative space— your arts center. Gratefully, Kelly Grill Executive Director

Finding Normalcy and Healing through the Arts: HCA’s Summer Arts Series Healing the Spirit Willie J Laws knows medicine. The born and raised Texan isn’t a physician but has been trying to heal the spirit of audiences through his music for more than 33 years. “[Making Music] is taking all the poison out of life and turning it into medicine,” said Laws. “As an artist, because of our creativity, we feel sensitivities - we feel a lot of what’s going on.” Law’s band is one of 18 bands who came together during HCA’s inaugural summer arts series. The new series was HCA’s response to addressing the isolation and anxiety the community was feeling around COVID. “HCA wanted to create a meaningful, safe and socially distanced way for the community to come together and still experience the healing power and joy of the arts amidst the pandemic,” said Kelly Grill, HCA executive director. “I continue to hear time and time again from folks in Hopkinton and the surrounding communities we serve just how much these opportunities to hear live music and feel ‘normal’ for a summer evening meant to them.”

Presented by Phipps Insurance Agency/MAPFRE Insurance and supported by the generosity of several local businesses and supporters like you, HCA’s summer series included free concerts every Friday and Saturday in June, July, and early September, a salsa night, and an outdoor exhibit by local artists all summer long.

“I love ending my week sitting out under the stars listening to amazing music. I really decompress out there.” — Judy Caplan, Hopkinton resident Summer series audiences also experienced the excitement of live theater. Enter Stage Left, HCA’s resident theater, presented the musicals Willy Wonka, Jr. and Firebringer. It also produced its first A Play, A Pint And A Pie play-writing festival modeled on traditional Edinburgh, Scotland play festivals in August. More than 200 people pulled up lawn chairs in HCA’s amphitheater, enjoying a pint and meat pie that evening. 2021 HCA GRATITUDE REPORT 7

Connecting Communities Long-time Hopkinton resident Sally Snyder has been a concert “super fan”— attending more than five concerts over last summer. “I think the HCA is a wonderful resource for our town,” said Snyder. “It is a really great place for people to gather and escape. We met folks from all over— people we have known for years and new residents.” The series drew hundreds of individuals from not only Hopkinton but dozens of surrounding communities including Milford, Holliston, Upton, Ashland and Southborough. In celebration of HCA being the regional arts center for these communities, special “town days” were created to celebrate HCA’s regional presence. “It is important for people from outside of Hopkinton to know that this is their space as well,” said Grill. “Our students and patrons come from over 350 communities, and we are here for all of them.”

“It was wonderful. It was a chance to get out, be around people while being safe by being outside, and enjoy some music.” — Joanne Apesos, Milford resident

Beloved local musician Steve Spector and his band Hot Acoustics kicked off the series with Hopkinton Day and were “over the moon” to be playing again. This was the first time the band had played in over a year and they were grateful to be playing to a packed house. “To see the energy out of the HCA, everyone (in the audience) was so grateful,” said Spector.

A Welcome Space For All An important consideration of HCA in offering the summer concerts was ensuring they would be free for anyone who wanted to attend. Accessibility and affordability are at the core of the HCA experience. “I am so glad when people like Hopkinton Arts Center do that and I am part of whatever they are planning,” said Laws. “I am always happy to do that.” Your support of HCA this year allowed us to make 70 percent of HCA’s events free and open to the public. Ken and Carolynn Henderson of Hopkinton would frequently meet friends at the many concerts they attended last summer. “The varied groups performing made for an entertaining evening,” said Carolynn. “We love your outdoor free concerts and can’t wait for them to start up again.”
