Spring 2024 HCA Class Catalog

We believe the Arts are for individuals of all ages, cultures, and artistic abilities. We develop artistic skills, offer outstanding performances and art exhibitions, and enable visitors to experience art in all forms.

The HCA offers over 200 classes for youth, teens, and adults in the visual and performing arts. Every year over 2,000 students enjoy classes in fine art, dance, music, theater, film-making, photography, acting, and ceramics. In addition, students can take private music and art lessons with qualified instructors.

Among our innovative current programs:

• Visual arts instruction for children with autism and adults with Alzheimer’s and developmental disabilities

• Free Summer Sunset Jazz Series in our beautiful amphitheater, which is adjacent to three lovely areas of respite: our Shakespeare, Fairy and Healing Gardens

• Linkage with public school students and teachers, who use HCA as an educational resource in the arts and in leadership training activities

The Lotvin Family Gallery showcases a variety of exhibits, including juried exhibits, the HCA Members show, featured solo artist exhibits, and educational and community projects. Juried exhibits are curated by guest jurors who select pieces from submissions received during our open calls for art. The Delbridge Family Performance Center is home to a variety of music, dance and theatrical performances throughout the year.

Enter Stage Left Theater (ESL) is the resident theater of the Hopkinton Center for the Arts, producing up to 10 productions every year. Each season brings a wide-array of theater options to audiences looking for a great affordable theater experience.

We are visited by more than 15,000 patrons a year from over 340 cities and towns in the US and Canada. Created in 2011, HCA, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community arts center, fosters and celebrates the creative spirit in everyone.

CERAMICS

Here at the HCA, ceramic students have the opportunity to get their hands dirty while creating everyday useful objects such as mugs, bowls, serving dishes, containers and other vessels as well as exploring the sculptural aspects of the medium. Directed by Hana Reilly, the ceramics studio welcomes students of all backgrounds and abilities. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive and supportive community where individuality and life-long friendships thrive.

Our ceramics studio has ample space and equipment for students to explore their own visions while being inspired by both their instructors and fellow students. The studio is equipped with 12 wheels, four large hand building tables, a slab roller, an extruder, three kilns, 16 glazes, slips, under-glazes, oxides and a plethora of hand-building and surface design tools. Beginners will learn basic hand-building skills such as slab, coil, and pinch pots, and all students will refine technique, surface treatment, and finishing options. More advanced students will dig into their own personal style by exploring more complex forms.

Students get a 25 lb bag of clay with their tuition. Any additional clay must be purchased at the HCA studio from our teachers. The price of registration includes all firing, access to glazes and underglazes. Tools are available in the studio, however, students can bring their own tools. Students will have access to Open Studio hours to work on their pieces outside of class time.

Using textures, glazes, oxides and a variety of decorative tile-making techniques, students will create their own unique tiles and use them in mosaics for wall hangings, trays, table tops, garden art, mirror frames and/or projects of their choosing. Time in class will include planning design(s), making and glazing 2-D and small 3-D functional and/or decorative ceramic pieces, gluing/thinsetting and grouting your tile pieces onto individualized mosaic projects. 25 pounds of clay and all glazes will be provided. Students will be responsible for purchasing boards for project mounting, glue/thinset and grout with teacher support.

DANCE

The HCA dance program welcomes students of all ages and levels of experience from around the MetroWest. Led by Director Jessica Wilson, the program is known for its high level of training and welcoming environment where students are encouraged to take chances and learn. The dance program places an emphasis on the classical ballet techniques passed down from the greats, but also embraces the non-traditional dance student, including adults and older teens who are looking for recreational classes in dance. The studio is not just a place to learn, but also a place to meet wonderful people and build lasting friendships. Together we explore, celebrate and promote the art of dance.

The Music Department at the HCA exists to help people of all ages and all abilities engage in sustainable, life-long music making. Our team of passionate instructors foster excellent technical skills, broad musical knowledge, and strong ability to relate to any music with excitement, curiosity, and emotion.

Directed by Rachel MacKenzie, the music program welcomes students of all backgrounds and abilities. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive and supportive community where individuality and life-long friendships thrive.

Our Music Program features 12-week long group music fundamental classes for all ages, a youth orchestra, choirs, and is equipped with 8 private lesson studios.

The goals of this program are to provide a fun and safe learning space to develop basic musical skills and foster broader development in each student. Designed for adults with intellectual disabilities, join this eight-week class and sing and play music with others. Learn to be part of a musical ensemble as you rehearse, create, and perform music with others! In this accessible ensemble, students will sing and learn new songs from various styles, create original pieces, play pattern and rhythm games, and share their favorite songs to sing during class karaoke!

The HCA does not provide support services during this program. If you or your student typically requires a 1:1 assistant, we require that the parent/ caregiver/aide remain for the class to assist.

Weekly Private Lessons are held for 30min, 45,min, or 60min seven days a week. Weekly Lessons are billed in packages of four at the following rates: 30min ($40 each), 45min ($55 each), 60min ($75 each). Drop-in (single lessons) are available at a slightly higher price.

The HCA’ Acting & Musical Theater Program welcomes students of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. The Program provides a supportive and nurturing environment where students develop and use their unique talents and abilities. Enter Stage Left Theater, the Resident Theater Company of The Hopkinton Center for the Arts, will be holding auditions for Michael V. Gazzo’s classic 1950s American drama A Hatful of Rain, for performances to be held on October 11, 12, 18, 19, 2024, to be directed by Paul Champlin.

This Award-winning drama relates the family turmoil posed by addiction after a young Korean War veteran returns home with opioid dependence. Enter Stage Left Theater Auditions

Enter Stage Left Theaterwill be holding auditions for its Fourth Annual outdoor summer One-Act Play Festival, “A Play, A Pint & A Pie,” to be performed on August 24 and 25, 2024. This festival showcases several short plays selected from nationwide and international playwright submissions and has been the hottest summer ticket since 2021.

Auditions will be held on Sunday, May 12, from 6 to 9 p.m., and Tuesday, May 14, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the HCA, 98 Hayden Rowe St., Hopkinton, MA. The HCA Visual Arts program welcomes students of all ages and abilities. Led by Director Sarah Alexander, the program provides a welcoming environment where students can discover, explore, and master artistic concepts through a variety of mediums.

Exploration courses are designed to let individuals discover different mediums and set personal goals to achieve at their own pace. Courses and workshops are a balance of skill-building and fun. Whether you are a complete novice or more advanced, this class will meet you where you are. We will start by studying drawing fundamentals including line, gesture, shape, space, proportion, and perspective. As we continue, we’ll expand into learning how to use value to create depth, texture, and mood in our artwork. This class will focus on observational drawing through a combination of exercises and longer projects.

Graphic novels are a rapidly growing art form. Do you have a story to tell or some amazing characters you want to be able to fully realize in a graphic novel format? Join this active painting class where everyone, including the instructor, will be behind an easel. Each week we will paint directly from observation, whether it be a still life arrangement or a study outdoors (weather depending). We will work quickly on a new painting each week to build skills in capturing light, shading, and composition. Watching the instructor at work beside you will provide an invaluable opportunity to learn new techniques. For intermediate to advanced students in oil and acrylic painting.

Unless otherwise noted: Adults are required to bring their own supplies. Instructors will provide students a list of what will be needed for class work.

Work side-by-side with your child in this fun handbuilding class. Each parent and child workshop is based on a different theme, and is a great way to get your hands muddy and experience clay. Great for a full family outing!

Join us for our new Monthly Meditation Circles with Wendy Gabriel, Growth and Empowerment Coach, Reiki Master, and Wellness Studio owner, as she introduces you to the basics of meditation, including the health benefits of starting a meditation practice. Join us for a full day workshop with award winning weaver, Dahlia Popovits, where you will create a beautiful unique table runner to be kept for your own use or given as a gift (in time for Mother’s Day!). No previous experience is necessary as you will be guided through the weaving, design and finishing process. Everyone will be provided a rigid heddle loom to use during class along with repurposed cotton fabric strips and luxury yarns. You are also welcome to bring your own fabrics to cut into strips and weave with. These can include a loved one’s flannel shirt, neckties, and or patterned sheets.

Explore the world of color and texture with award winning weaver, Dahlia Popovits. In this full day workshop, you will learn to weave on a rigid heddle loom, and leave with a finished wall hanging of your own design. All skill levels are welcome as you will be guided through every step of the process. We’ll use yarn of various weights and textures to match your unique style, and learn a variety of popular weaving methods including plain weave, soumak, rya knots and tapestry techniques. As you begin to master the art of weaving throughout the day, you will also learn how the nature of this art form can be very soothing, a true de-stressor that will help you unwind as you work on a creative project.

Before being able to dive into acting in front of an audience, an actor first has to become comfortable on stage and with other actors. Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m.

Work side by side in this fun art workshop where you will be introduced to traditional Indian arts as you paint and decorate mandalas together. Meaning “circle” in Sanskrit, mandalas are believed to symbolize the universe and wholeness, and working on the designs can have a calming, meditative effect. Everyone will choose from a selection of canvases designed with round geometric pattern outlines, and begin by painting them in with acrylics, learning how to shade and combine colors.

REFUND POLICY

If you wish to cancel a registration:

1. Refunds of program fees will be offered in full if requested two (2) weeks prior to their start date. Please make the request in writing by emailing info@ hopartscenter.org. Families are asked to consider donating a portion of their fees to the HCA to help with the ongoing activities and operational support.

2. If a cancellation is made less than two (2) weeks prior to the start of the session, the tuition fee is nonrefundable. Request to transfer to another to another program may be possible.

Waivers

I understand there is a certain amount of reasonable risk of minor injury associated with this program and do not hold the Hopkinton Center of the Arts, Enter Stage Left Theater, or the Town of Hopkinton responsible for any such injuries.

I give permission for my or my child’s image in videotapes, photographs and/or motion picture films in which she/he appears, and audio recordings made of him/her may be used by the Hopkinton Center for the Arts and Enter Stage Left Theater for publicity purposes. You may request for your images not to be used by submitting a formal request to info@hopartscenter.org.

HCA Financial Aid

The Hopkinton Center for the Arts believes the arts are for everyone and thanks to the generosity of the Dora Kishibay Garabedian Scholarship Fund and individual donations to our scholarship fund we are able to assist children, teens, and adults who might not otherwise be able to afford classes. Need-based scholarships are available for HCA classes to residents of Hopkinton and surrounding MetroWest communities.
