LITTLE EXPLORERS (Rising grades K-2)

Little Explorers are one-week half day programs designed to make participants in the first half of elementary school feel right at home. Arts activities are based on a new creative theme each week allowing for lots of exploration and imaginative play. Programming includes a combination of visual arts and music, drama and movement, along with games and story time.
Parents have the option to sign their child up for visual arts and music combination or dance in the mornings, while the afternoon’s explore drama, singing and movement in our Musical Theater Fun program. Both morning and afternoon sessions have the same weekly theme, but do not repeat content and include story time, imaginative play, crafts and games. Lunchtime supervision is provided for all participants at our 98 Hayden Rowe Street location at no additional charge, between 11:15–12:15. All children must bring their own lunch and snacks. No peanut products. No food is provided by the HCA.
Sessions are available 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Certain weeks an afternoon option is available from 11:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. All programs except our Dance programs take place at our 98 Hayden Rowe main campus. All dance programs take place at our 22 South Street Dance Studio.

Afternoon Programs

MORNING ART EXPLORERS
Our morning program is perfect for your creative child! Students will create unique pieces of art that will involve the use of clay, paint and other fun materials, as well as have a chance to explore, develop and build on their innate musical abilities. There will be story-time, imaginative play, Echo songs, Circle Games, Song Tales, classical music, and so much more. Perfect for any child that loves to paint, draw, sing, dance, and move their bodies!
Students will make-up two different age groups: Ages 4–5 and 6–7. Each group will split their time between the Art Adventures and Music for Kids programs.

Stories are all around us! Using fairy tales as a starting point, students will create visual art, flex their performing muscles with character creation, and experience the magic of stories by becoming the storytellers themselves through art, music, drama, and dance!

This week, our imaginations are running wild! We will travel to the world of make believe. Students will make characters come to life by acting out stories and creating art with no boundaries inspired by magical realms and mystical adventures.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fly? In this program, we will explore all things that fly. Students will create their own flying artwork while exploring sound and movement.

This week, students will go on a journey around the world as we explore art, traditions, and stories from outside the United States. We will create artwork from a variety of countries and hone our storytelling skills with acting activities.

AFTERNOON MUSICAL THEATER FUN

This afternoon program is perfect for budding performers who love to act out stories and sing songs! Each week’s Musical Theater Fun will feature a different children’s story or movie that the kids will act out for family and friends at the end of the week. Each story will involve 2 songs (or more) with simple choreography. Plenty of time is built in for games and crafts.

The Little Mermaid: Students will travel to a world deep beneath the sea where there lived a little mermaid named Ariel. She loved exploring her underwater home with her friend flounder but dreamed of living on land as a human.

The Lorax: Students will “meet” the Lorax who speaks for the trees and confronts the Once-ler, a business magnate who causes environmental destruction. This story encourages personal care and involvement in making the situations better.

ArtsFocus (Rising 3rd–6th grades, with some options for rising 2nd graders)
ArtsFocus programs enable students to focus on their selected art forms. Instructors promote exploration of materials and discovery of the creative voice. All students must bring their own lunch and snacks. No peanut products. No food is provided. FINE ARTS ACADEMY

This program is based on one of the HCA’s most popular programs because it covers a little bit of everything relating to art making. Drawing, Watercolors, acrylic, pastel, mixed media, and pen and ink. Every morning students will focus on drawing foundations and observational drawing and learn new techniques. Students will study proportion and composition to draw a variety of people, objects, and landscapes. Students will complete the fun with gestural drawing exercises, as well as longer durational studies. The afternoons focus on that week’s theme where students will learn about different artists and make work inspired by those artists and their chosen mediums.

Fabric & Fiber Arts (grades 2-6 | age 7–11)
There are so many possibilities for art made with fabric and fiber! Students will learn a variety of styles that may include stitching, dyeing, weaving, fabric collage, and clothing modification. Machine sewing will NOT be taught in this program.

Designed for the artist who wants to tell a story with text and images, this popular program invites students to explore cartoons, comic books, and graphic novels. Students will try their hand at single panel cartoons, short comics, and caricatures, as well as writing stories to go along with their drawings.

Hand-building & Clay Sculpture

This workshop will focus on hand-building and sculpture techniques, giving students the skills to create both functional and decorative pieces. Students will learn a variety of ways to build structurally sound vessels and small to medium-sized sculptures. A new theme is presented each week to inspire the students in their creations. Students will be able to paint their projects, but will have to wait until they are glazed and fired in the HCA kiln to pick up their projects. ARTIST WORKSHOPS
(Rising 7–10th grade)

Fashion Up-Cycling
Students will create new and exciting clothing and fashion accessories while exploring sustainability by re-purposing, deconstructing and combining old clothes into runway- ready garments. In this workshop, students will explore the fundamentals of creating functional pottery forms. They’ll focus on wheel throwing and learn about working in a ceramics studio environment. Then join this weekly summer afternoon program! HCA music teacher and professional musician Robb Millet will help you take your music out of the garage/basement and onto the stage.
This program will culminate with a live rock band concert with professional lighting and sound. This program is the perfect chance to play your favorite tunes with help from the pros!

Enter Stage Left Theater is excited to announce its junior stock musical production: Finding Nemo Jr. Explore the big blue world with this lively new stage musical based on the beloved Pixar film! Directed by Alyssa Rae Surrette.

This half day program is perfect for all kids who love dance and music! Each day is designed to encourage creativity through the exploration of a theme using dance (ballet, jazz and hip hop focus), crafts, props, and music. The theme for the week-long program is based upon the classic story ballet. The daily schedule consists of a ballet class, music, jazz and hip hop foundation, snack, story and acting, an activity related to the story, and a movement game or improvisation activities. The daily schedule consists of a ballet class, music, jazz and hip hop foundation, snack, story and acting, an activity related to the story, and a movement game or improvisation activities. Students may enroll in one or more weeks. Please bring your own packed snack. The week culminates with a demonstration for families.

DANCE WORKSHOP (Ages 11–15)
Day: Monday–Friday
Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. | 22 South Street
Price: $300 | Member Price: $285
Students will spend their days immersed in dance while they improve their technique, explore artistry and expression, learn repertoire, and experiment with student choreography. Daily classes include ballet and pointe/pre pointe, jazz, contemporary, acting and pantomime, historical dance, hip hop, choreography and more. Come explore dance in a fun and welcoming environment.
