lowly seamstress at a swanky bridal boutique, Gabi Delgado dreams of doing more than ripping out seams and fitting dresses to doe-eyed brides. She wants to see her own original dress designs gracing the young women of Texas. But when Jordan Singer, reporter for Texas Bride magazine, visits the shop to do a feature, Gabi is humiliated in his very influential—and unnervingly handsome—presence.

Our Season of Bloom Summer is officially here! School is out, families nationwide have started taking vacations and neighborhood ice cream trucks and sprinklers are in full rotation. I’m not only excited about this new, warm season—I’m excited about your season. As the world said goodbye to literary icon, Maya Angelou, I’m reminded of her drive, self-confidence and willingness to become the best that she could become, and to inspire others along her journey. She lived a full life and made sure she left no gift untapped. Her books encouraged women of all races, across all nations, to be phenomenal in whatever it is that they do. In honor of Dr. Maya Angelou, this issue speaks to Life in Full Bloom! Many women across the world are in the process of blooming and blossoming into who they truly are, or are daily walking in the fullness of who God created them to be. (On Page 18) Lupita Nyong’o has bloomed into a fashion icon. (Page 23) Sarah Jakes has found her individuality and personal flavor in the world, besides being the daughter of world-renowned pastor, Bishop T.D. Jakes. Recording artist, Mya celebrates and blossoms into the year of her Sweet 16—not as a teenager of course, but her sixteen years of success in the music industry. But this season of Life in Full Bloom is especially significant to me, because I watched my mom—my shero—bloom from seeds she planted a long time ago. My mother, who is now 71 years young, adopted my nephew when he was just 15 months old. This June, she had the honor of watching that 15-month-old boy who grew into a fine young man walk across the stage and receive his high-school diploma. The joy on her face when his name was called is indescribable. My son also graduated high school and is headed to college in the fall semester! While many complained about the brutal, cold winters most of the United States experienced last season, it’s time to celebrate and bloom into the new things God is doing in this season! Your new season starts now! Don’t wait until autumn. You don’t even have to wait until January 1, 2015. You have the power to change your life—your due season—right now! You’re not truly living if you’re not living a life in full bloom! Anything else is simply existing. In Full Bloom,

forgiveness is Not an Option

by m aria ja m e s

When God tugged at her heart, Rachel Berry knew it was time to forgive her dad. “Two years ago, my father divorced my mother after a marriage of 26 years. I had known nothing different than having two married parents and a happy family unit. Honestly, my foundation was completely shaken,” says Berry. “As the divorce process painfully drug on, my family became more torn and bitter, and at the end of it, much of the love in my heart was replaced with bitterness.” Berry says even after she felt God’s gentle nudges and read scriptures about forgiveness, it was more comfortable to stay bitter and upset than to feel the pain and release the blame. “Ironically, my mother was the biggest influence in my life that encouraged me to forgive my dad,” says Berry. “Although the pain she felt from the divorce was probably greater than mine, she knew we could not move forward without forgiving.” Anna McCarthy, author of the book Forgiveness is not an Option, knows these feelings all too well. “My life was met with a lot of disappointment. I experienced abuse, betrayal, broken relationships and a lot of let downs from people in my life. I tried a lot of different methods to heal and cope, but kept ending up right where I’d started, said McCarthy. “I was angry at those who had hurt me and angry at God for allowing those things to happen to me.” As a victim of sexual abuse as a child and domestic abuse as an adult, she struggled with forgiving many people in her life. “I went through a three-year journey researching God’s word on abuse, betrayal and mistreatment because I needed to know what His perspective was of everything I had gone through. What I learned, not only changed my life, but it completely set me free.” McCarthy wrote Forgiveness is Not an Option to share what she learned during her journey and as a guide for others who are struggling with some of these same issues. 8  hope | q2 2014

She provides the following five steps to Biblical forgiveness: step one: allow yourself time to grieve “It amazes me how many of us don’t allow ourselves to grieve when we’ve been hurt,” says McCarthy. She says we must acknowledge our hurt not only to ourselves and to the Lord, but also give ourselves permission to feel anger and sadness. step two: surrender our injury to god’s sovereignty McCarthy reminds us that we are not in control and that we must surrender our rights to the outcome of the situation to God. “Rebuilding our trust and belief in a good, kind and loving God who can fully be trusted, is paramount to healing,” she says. step three: make the choice to forgive While you may not feel like forgiving, don’t forget that forgiveness is a choice. It’s also an act of obedience. “Jesus teaches more than just choosing to forgive,” says McCarthy. “Jesus tells us, “ love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matt 5:44). step four: pray for the offender “This isn’t an easy step, especially for those who have been deeply hurt, but without this step true forgiveness cannot take place,” says McCarthy. She speaks from experience. “I’ve prayed for someone who sexually abused me, someone who was violent with me as a young adult, an unfaithful spouse, people who lied about me – you name a situation and a hurt and I’ve probably walked through forgiving it,” she says. “Not only is it possible, but it’s supernaturally powerful in setting you free. “ step five: show love for the offender Finally, McCarthy says arriving at this last step is the easiest if you’ve completed the previous steps. “If you commit to pray for that person, your heart will naturally soften and you will begin to feel Christ-like love for them.” It’s a principle that McCarthy says she has seen work time and time again. It’s never too late to forgive. “Everyday that goes by we choose not to forgive, is another day we choose to live in bondage to what that person did to us,” says McCarthy. Although still painful, Rachel Berry says God reminded her that His love for her dad had not been reduced because of his actions. “I had the freedom and peace to begin loving my father for who he was, and regardless of his actions. Our relationship has improved, but it’s not where it once was. However, I have completely surrendered our relationship to the hands of God, and that is the best place it can be.” q2 2014 | hope   9

Women Who Inspire Alexandra Franzen by j oa n n a l eflo r e

Simplicity equals so much more than meets the eye. When motivation strikes, nothing can stop Alexandra Franzen from achieving unspeakable passions Alexandra Franzen shared motivational words with HOPE, offering a fresh perspective on happiness through simplicity. HOPE: We live in a world that is fixated on getting one another’s attention, often with distractions from the media and endless to-do’s. Yet you promote that simplicity leads to more joy. Why is this so important for the work that you do? FR ANZEN: To quote one of my lifelong heroes, Mister Rogers: “I feel so strongly that deep and simple is far more essential than shallow and complex.” I think about those words, often. I’ve come to believe that unnecessary complexity is a burden. It holds us back and keeps us stuck. But simplicity is a liberating force. It frees us to do more. (Or do less, and do it better.) For me, the answer to just about any question is: “Let it be simpler.” HOPE: Looking back on your life, what’s one experience that has influenced what you are doing today? FRANZEN: I’ll never forget the day I received a mysterious, twosentence email from a woman I barely knew in a city I’d never been to. Her name was Danielle. She’s now an extraordinarily successful entrepreneur. Back then, she was refining the shape of her business and was seeking a communications manager to help simplify her world. She hired me — even though I was fairly inexperienced at the time — just based on an intuitive hit that I could help her. Her vote of confidence felt like lighter fuel for my business. She wasn’t just a great “boss” — she was a true catalyst for my career, opening me 10  hope.com | q2 2014

up to new opportunities at every possible moment. I’ll never forget the way she treated and supported me in those early days. One day, I hope to be that kind of catalyst for somebody else. HOPE: For every woman seeking happiness, but still dealing with some traumatic experiences, what advice would you offer? What would you say to women who are afraid to take risks? FRANZEN: Whatever you’re feeling right now - it’s all temporary. You are resilient. You are limitless. And whatever you want to create next: You can choose to let it be simpler. HOPE: Knowing what you know now, if you could convince women to adopt a new habit, what would it be and why? FRANZEN: ISpend a little less time locking eyes with your computer screen and a little more time locking eyes with the person you love. (And/or: Dishing out compliments to strangers.) You’ll feel way more amazing. I speak from experience. HOPE: It’s evident that now you’ve had a successful run with your career. So what can HOPE expect next from you? FRANZEN: MAn online school for teenagers. It’s about writing and public speaking, but really, it’s about self-esteem. I’m also working on an erotic novel, my fiction debut! I’m also working on a book on crafting the perfect responses for “awkward conversations.” Plus lots more musings and lessons on writing, creativity and productivity —with less drama and more love.

Heidi Powell

on Making Promises You Can Keep by j en n i fer dav i e s

Over the past few years, Heidi Powell, wife of Extreme Weight Loss’ transformation specialist Chris Powell, has become a household name. While we will see her in front of the camera for the first time this summer as millions tune in to watch Heidi and Chris transform lives on season four of the successful ABC show, she has long since been an anchor for past participants and her husband on and off camera. When asked about her favorite thing about being on Extreme Weight Loss, she says it is working with her best friend and husband, Chris Powell. “I don’t know another person like him,” she explains. “How you see him on the show is truly who he is as a person. He inspires me to be better every single day.” Despite years of experience helping others achieve their personal fitness goals, Heidi is the first to admit that she doesn’t know everything, which she says has become her biggest lesson since working on the show. “We are perpetual students. Everybody is different and requires a different path.” Regardless, she says each journey shares the same values, the most important of which is learning to keep your promises. “Science can get you to lose weight. But science doesn’t keep you there. Making commitments keeps you there.” Her own struggles with body image and confidence have proven to her the importance of not just focusing on the physical transformation of your body, but also the mental one. “You need education and knowledge on working out and nutrition to lose weight, but transformations are so much more than weight loss.” In the midst of nutrition plans and workouts, “it’s about unconditional love and support” to help the show’s participants truly change their lives for the better. Even with commitment and support, occasionally life will happen and cause you to miss a workout or skip your meal plan. “So many women have the misconception that if we fall, we fail. Realize that one slip up isn’t the end. Start from there and keep going like you’re on track.” When you do get off track, remember that you are not alone and decide to confess, reassess and recommit. “When I am keeping promises to myself, I feel unstoppable and know that I am capable of huge things.” She said this easily applies to your mental state as well as your physical one. Like all women, she is a work in progress. “We care so much about what other people think. It is a miserable place, but I try to keep my focus on how blessed I am and how strong I feel.” Heidi credits her husband Chris with showing her that strength is beauty and how it matters more than appearance. Finding balance in your workouts and diet is critical to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, she explains. “Don’t set yourself up for failure by setting goals that you know you can’t meet. Be realistic and set yourself up for success. If you set goals and achieve them, there is always that extra benefit of exceeding your own expectations.” With a husband who is on the road for a large portion of the year and four small children, Heidi says making healthy food convenient is mandatory through bulk prep. “Sundays and Wednesdays are prep days for us. We cook up

four really good meals and then eat leftovers for the next few days. We’ll keep it in Tupperware so we can grab and go, which fits our chaotic lifestyle.” Still, she admits that pre-planning is key and without it, even her family could easily fall into bad habits. Though she and Chris advocate for making it easier to eat healthy through planning and advance prep, she says it is not about depriving yourself. “I have a sweet tooth so I get it,” she explains. But she says almost always, there is a healthy alternative to any unhealthy splurge. It is all about making your healthy lifestyle sustainable and when you do indulge, “make sure you build it into your plan.” Heidi focuses on the carb cycling program that Chris created. Carb cycling is an eating plan with alternating high-carb and low-carb days, which is explained more in Chris Powell’s book Choose More, Lose More for Life. “Some do better on a plan that gives you one day to eat whatever you want, sort of a Sunday Funday,” she says. “For me, I have a hard time going six full days without splurging so with the plan I’m on, I get a treat every other day. I tell myself that if I can’t have it today, I can have it tomorrow, which usually keeps me strong and on target.” At the end of the day, choose something you can stick with. “If you can’t stick with it, you’ll lose faith in yourself and then there’s no point,” she reminds us.

Heidi’s Favorite… Go to snack: Raw almonds Guilty pleasure: Starbucks iced coffee with one pump of mocha and small side of heavy whipping cream instead of whip cream Motivational quote: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Calorie burner: 7 minutes of burpees Thing about being a mom: They make me laugh and smile every day!

3 tips to

Great Summer Skin Now that the warmer weather is here, it’s time to show off your beautiful skin! Take a look at your skin’s current condition. Your skin may not be ready to be bare just yet. In the winter, people often don’t give their skin the same care and attention that they do during the spring and summer months. Warmer weather requires showing some skin. Here are the three most important things you need to do to prepare your skin for its upcoming debut and to maintain it all summer long. 14  @hopemag | q2 2014

Exfoliate

The winter can leave skin dry that’s dull and sometimes, cracked and flaky. Exfoliation is the skin’s natural process of shedding dead cells. By adding exfoliation to your skin care routine, you can assist this natural process at the surface and encourage newer, better-looking skin. Benefits of exfoliation are: •Exfoliation keeps skin looking clean, healthy, and more uniform in tone •Skin is less likely to break out •It creates a smooth complexion •t improves all types of skin and all types of concerns It is important to invest in a good exfoliating regimen--one for your face and another for the rest of your body. Exfoliate your skin two or three times a week. Exfoliate your body in the shower using exfoliating gloves, body scrubs or a body brush. Exfoliating methods for the face include scrubs, microdermabrasion or chemical peels conducted by an experienced esthetician.

hydrate

Water, water, water! It’s very important to drink plenty of water leading up to and during warmer months. There are numerous benefits to drinking water. Here are a few: Benefits of hydration are: •Water helps your skin detoxify from the inside out, which helps prevent acne and other skin issues •Water is essential to maintain the optimum skin moisture and to deliver essential nutrients to the skin cells •Water replenishes the skin tissue and increases its elasticity, which helps delay the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles •Water helps keep pores clear and tighter •Water gives you more radiant, glowing skin In addition to drinking water, there are several great skin care products that will help properly hydrate your skin. For your face, use a moisturizer that is an oil-free moisturizer. Use it in the morning and nighttime to topically rehydrate the skin. Since products that keep your skin moist in the winter may leave it oily in the summer, I recommend using oil-free products during this time of the year. In warmer weather, the oil glands on your skin are more active, and more oil means more potential for skin breakouts.

protect

Sun protection is very important all year round, but especially in the warmer weather. After cleansing in the morning, apply a good sunscreen of at least SPF30, all over your face before applying any makeup. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to all exposed skin including hands, neck, décolletage, shoulders and legs. Sunscreen has the following benefits: •Prevents premature signs of aging, including fine lines and wrinkles •Helps maintain an even skin tone •Protects your skin from sun damage caused by harmful UV rays •It’s proven to decrease the risk of the development of skin cancer These three important tips will help get your skin ready for the summer. The consistent practice of these things can help to keep your skin healthy and beautiful year round. q2 2014 | @hopemag   15

Fashion’s Natural Beauty by c a r r a lyce b u fo r d

Kenyan-Mexican beauty Lupita Nyong’o (31) has taken over Hollywood with poise, grace and of course, style. Starring in her breakout role in “12 Years a Slave” as Patsey, Lupita has received numerous awards and accolades for her performance. Within a year, Lupita has gone from an unknown actress to becoming a Screen Actors Guild Award winner, NAACP Image Award winner, BAFTA winner, Academy Award winner and soon to be a fashion icon. Lupita stepped out on the red carpet at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards looking absolutely stunning in a red Ralph Lauren gown with an attached cape, giving everyone a major fashion moment. Lupita instantly popped up on everyone’s fashion radar for the rest of the awards season, and she never disappointed. From gowns, pant suits, cocktail dresses, shorts, pencil skirts to sky blue, red, black, white, turquoise, emerald green, Lupita has worn everything from Ralph Lauren, Prada and Christian Dior to Lanvin and Calvin Klein. In a time where girls grow up thinking that long flowing hair, their clothes and being a size 0 is considered beauty, Lupita offers a breath of fresh air and proves them wrong. Rocking a versatile natural low cut fade, beautiful dark skin, a gorgeous smile and regularly wearing loud pops of color has hopefully changed the minds of many when they define beauty. Many people praise Lupita for her fashion choices, but the real praise should go to her fearlessness by making Hollywood appreciate and accept natural beauty. It’s because of her risks that she has had the opportunity to grace the covers of DuJour Magazine, Dazed & Confused and New York Magazine’s Spring Fashion cover. You’ll also see her in the 2014 Miu Miu campaign along with Elle Fanning, Elizabeth Olsen and Bella Heathcote. Fashion, beauty and happiness is what you make of it. Don’t let others decide your worth. Lupita Nyong’o said it best in her Oscar’s speech, “No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.” Keep it fabulous ladies! 18  @hopemag | q2 2014

Work & Career:

Online degrees

by j en n i fer dav i e s

Transforming your life and personal commitments to family and friends to go back to school can be a tough decision. Thankfully, with nearly 33 percent of students today pursuing a degree at least partially online, the ability to learn from anywhere in the world has opened new doors. Online education has exploded as internet accessibility and technology have become more readily available to the masses, according to Professor I. Elaine Allen at the University of California San Francisco and co-director of the Babson Survey Research Group. “Professors now see the value in reaching a new demographic of students and employers see the benefits of online collaboration, given the global world we live in,” she said. Central Michigan University consistently ranks high for its online programs and, this year, received the number one spot for their undergraduate online program from U.S. News and World Report. Marnie Roestel, manager of CMU online, and Patrick Kaleb, director of graduate programs, agree that online education is reaching more students than ever before. “Working adults who want to further their education but still raise a family and meet personal commitments can do it all simultaneously,” Marnie explained. Though it isn’t without its challenges, “The single biggest predictor of success in online classes is students’ understanding of what the program will require,” she said. A potential online student should be a “self-directed learner, motivated, able to take initiative, set goals and get your work done amid distractions.” Patrick points out that just because it might be good for your schedule doesn’t mean online education is for you. “Students have to identify what works best, not just schedule wise, but for them as a learner and knowing what 20  hope | Q2 2014

environment you are successful in,” he said. Neil Teixeira, director of distance learning for the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, says they embraced online learning when they knew technology could match their vision for a rigorous and social academic experience. “Several years ago, we knew we wanted an online program to mirror what we offered on campus,” he explained. “We were just waiting for technology to catch up.” In 2010, Annenberg began to seriously consider an online version of their reputable Master of Communication Management program and began working with faculty that was interested in playing a role. “For us, the biggest concern was maintaining the academic integrity and intellectual rigor that has become synonymous with USC programs,” he said. “We knew that offering the same faculty who taught on campus as instructors in our online program would be an important aspect in achieving that,” he said. The online Master of Communication Management program launched in the fall of 2011 and has since graduated more than 100 students. If you decide to look into online education options, there are several key factors that can help you determine if a program or university is reputable. “Look for things like their accreditation, whether the university is profit or non-profit and whether services are mirrored for both programs in terms of networking opportunities, library access, tutoring and writing services,” Marnie explained. Neil reminds potential students to look at a university’s faculty, curriculum and standards for admission. “If you see different standards from on-campus to online, do your research to see what the differences are,” he explained. “Ideally, there aren’t any.”

High Tech Couponing

by j en n i fer dav i e s

These days, we’re all looking for ways to save money on everything from clothing to home goods and groceries. Yet, despite good intentions, navigating the wild world of couponing can be overwhelming. Luckily, our smartphones make it easier than ever to cash in on serious shopping savings. Mobidia, a leading consumer research firm, conducted a study in 2013 about mobile shopping habits. The report showed that 90 percent of the estimated 195 million smartphone owners nationwide are interested in mobile coupons and shopping, with up to 66 percent of smartphone owners using shopping apps to receive coupons, check product reviews and respond to daily deals. Chris Hill, vice president of marketing for Mobidia, says, “We’re seeing a shift from mobile websites to mobile apps. There is a real opportunity to improve a consumer’s experience when you have a dedicated app instead of a website, where you can send notifications, pin point the user’s location and utilize specific features of phones,” he said. “Mobile savings apps are a growing industry and will only continue to rise over the next few years as retailers figure out what consumers are hoping to see and save inside their apps.” Melea Johnson knows firsthand how much you can save by shopping smart online, which is why she created her own website, Freebies2Deals.com, to help educate others on the benefits of couponing and mobile apps. “There are a lot to choose from so it can definitely get confusing,” she said. When it comes to finding good apps, the reviews don’t lie. “iPhone and Android both have ways for users to leave reviews of the app. After reading those, you will quickly know if the app is a keeper.” She said checking out the app’s social media sites like Facebook and Twitter can also help you determine the following of an app and its usefulness to you as a shopper. She saves big with sites like Retail Me Not, which provides a list of current coupons for stores. “It literally takes seconds to find the coupon you need using their search engine,” she said. Saving on major purchases, like groceries, without traditional coupon clipping is tougher, but Melea reminds shoppers to take advantage of digital couponing. Many top grocers like Meijer, Kroger, Safeway and their regional companies allow you to clip coupons all from their app on your smartphone. You simply register your shopper’s card and all the coupons to it. “When the grocery store asks for your shopper’s card to scan, all of the digital coupons you clipped will come off your bill,” Melea explained. “It is super easy and something most shoppers don’t know about.” She also recommends Ibotta and Checkout51 to help save on groceries.

Download Now: A fan of clothes swaps? The Poshmark app is for you. It allows you to buy or sell items from your closet from other fashionistas. You can easily shop from other users’ closets or list your own items. The app even lets you set up virtual shopping parties. The SavingStar app allows you to register your grocery and drugstore loyalty cards. After using your card, SavingStar will deposit the money into your SavingStar account within two to 22 days. Once you save $5, you can transfer the money to your bank or PayPal account, or get an Amazon gift card. The Wish app allows you to shop and add favorites to a wish list. After adding items, you will get special offers for items you like directly from brands.

Lost & Found:

Honesty and Humility Healed Her Wounds, Making Room for Inspiring Words by Sarah Jakes by j oa n n a l eflo r e

after a morning workout and a craving for chocolate chip cookies, we caught up with Sarah Jakes to get the scoop on being a daughter of the ministry, sacrificing a married life for a purpose-filled one, and achieving the persona of ‘supermom.’ She is no stranger to living life in the public’s eye having spent most of her years behind a pulpit or pew of The Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas, the ministry of her father Bishop T.D. Jakes. Admitting that she still seeks balance daily, Jakes shared her views on the importance of having a strong foundation despite living in the limelight. “Balance doesn’t come naturally. Sometimes the pain we receive teaches us how to find balance,” Jakes shares. “When we are at home, we have a very normal life. People think we are always walking around dressed up for service. People are not always open to our personal struggles.” For Jakes, balance conveys having the ability to recognize her flaws and remain transparent with the public. Her blog is proof of this, having reached a million hits in the first three months of launching. Jakes received so much positive feedback from people that she had no idea she was reaching. She often talks about being transparent in expressing her feelings, especially on stories about the break-up of a recent marriage to former Washington Redskins linebacker Robert Henson four years after jumping the broom. “I did not realize I was being transparent. I just thought I was telling my truth. I started blogging as a way to release my experiences,” Jakes contests. “It didn’t start as a marketing ploy. I think maybe people were looking for something real. It helped me see that others are going through the same things and that maybe we can all grow together.” 22  hope | Q2 2014

Her first memoir, Lost and Found: Finding Hope in the Detours of Life (April 2014), chronicles past experiences of being a P.K. (preacher’s kid) and pregnant at age 14. Jakes openly shares her feelings about how transparency offers more hope for healing than the church has shown her in the past. “In this generation, we are looking for a platform to share our true identities. Even in church, we are seeking more open experiences,” Jakes admits. “We should know how to responsively treat them with grace. We should learn how to be as real as the world we live in. We have to be open to evolving this tradition.” Jakes was not shy to mention that in the past, she was not always sure how to combat her personal truth, even in her relationships. She is constantly praying for discipline to trust God with the small steps in life and being able to recognize a need for personal growth. This was only possible with a closer relationship with God, she says. She also admits that her having a smart mouth has probably hurt people. Having faults haunt her from her past and dealing with guilt left her feeling helpless at times. “I thought that in order to have a relationship with God, I needed to have a life worthy of His grace. I rushed into life, trying to fix everything and live in a certain way. But now I don’t focus on the emotions; I search for God in everything. “It’s okay everywhere except for in the ministry to show that we are broken.” Jakes bluntly exposes the commonly unfair expectations she faced to live a perfect life, recalling the reality that a lot of hope is put into people instead of God. Jakes hopes that her book will help other women break free from their daily torments and seek humility during the healing process. Clarifying that she no longer does things for other people as she has in the past, Jakes is currently listening to other women work through their struggles. Despite her reluctance to work in ministry as her parents have, it’s no mistake that Jakes is currently heading the Women’s Ministry at The Potter’s House. She is sure that encouraging other young mothers to express their pain, meanwhile pushing for passion, is surely a part of her calling.

Mya in full

Bloom by j oa n n a l eflo r e

It’s been 16 years since singer, dancer and independent music producer Mya Harrison first performed as an urban entertainer with Interscope Records. It was 1998 when the radio still played remnants of Whitney Houston as a tribute to classic R&B. In 2014, Mya is still shaking the stage and inspiring others to enjoy life through her melodic sounds. Her background as an entertainer allowed her to later create more innovative soundtracks with Motown Records on songs like “Movin’ On” and “Case of the Ex.” Her lyrics mostly speak to relationships and love, often working with iconic artists such as Wyclef Jean and Missy Elliot. Now 35, Mya attributes most of her growth as an artist to being a constant learner and observer of the inspiring world around her. Mya shares how both tenacity and patience fueled her passion to remain successful in today’s competitive music industry. “There are lots of pros and cons to being an independent artist. When you’re signed to a label, you have to wait your turn to access the budget. But as an independent, the commitment to projects and assuring the costs associated with it requires hard work,” Mya said. “You have to be on the grind and hopefully bringing in more money than you spend. When you’re independent, you have a better appreciation of where the dime goes. You also still have a lot of creative freedom.”

Along with becoming a business exec (managing the music label Planet 9/InGrooves), traveling has also been a main focus for Mya, having a strong influence on her recent works released via iTunes recently. Her international following stretches across the planet, including countries such as Japan and Europe. To catalogue her experiences, she released a boutique EP titled With Love. The digital collection was released on Valentine’s Day as an appreciation gift in honor of her fans who have supported her over the years. “My very first single came out 16 years ago and this year was my sweet sixteen! A lot of people have grown with me and I wanted to give them something. We’ve been hungry for music and I just got tired of waiting on others and decided to pay for this music myself.” The last album K.I.S.S. (Keep It Sexy & Simple) was released in 2011 but since then, Mya claimed that it was time to do something about the unsatisfied demand for good music. This year she released a second EP Sweet XVI, a physical album with full versions of singles from With Love and bonus tracks only to be sold online and on her worldwide tour. Mya said her creative process is modeled after the simplicity of having a passion for artistic expression and a love for her fans. “There is really no one creative process when I’m in the studio. I get the most inspired and moved when I’m around musicians. There’s something that just resonates with my soul when I hear chords or musical instruments. It’s not so much the drums and beats that I’m moved by, but it’s more about working with musicians that my creativity and song writing flows. Honestly, it’s the music that inspires me to get out what’s inside.” q2 2014 | hope   27

Dancing is also a release for Mya, as portrayed in her recent appearances on Dancing with the Stars. She has been performing on public stages through dance since she was a child, crediting her major influence for entertaining to her parents – her father was a performing musician and her mother introduced her to tap dance at a young age. Mya danced professionally while studying at the Dance Theater of Harlem. She later developed skills in dance improvisation as the lead choreographer for Broadway productions and later choreographing her own music videos and dance routines for worldwide performances. Evolution may seem like a natural and simple path for any artist; however, Mya’s growth became more complex over the years, allowing her to realize the importance of connecting with the world around her. She credits her growth as an artist to her ability to mature as a woman first. “I wasn’t as connected as a younger girl. Sometimes it’s all about what you wear when you’re young and always wanting to be fly. But I’ve grown from that and have a strong passion for enhancing other people’s lives. Lots of things I do are no longer about me and that’s how I’ve grown. My purpose is much more clear now and I hope to bring that to my music!” My a g i v e s b a c k t o t h e y o u t h t h r o u g h h e r foundation The Mýa Arts & Tech Foundation based out of Washington D.C. The focus of the non-profit is to serve youth through arts and technology education and increasing literacy. Mya’s new EP release might offer some relief to the radio lyrics currently cluttering the air with songs like “Super Woman” and “Unbreakable.” They feature more upbeat melodies and what Mya claims add soul to her music. She says she titled the album With Love because it reflects the many elements of her life. “In addition to dancing, there will a lways be components to my project where you can hear a testimony or ministry. But you can also go on the dance floor and enjoy yourself too. There are many different components of me so my music has the same elements.” She is not mistaken in stating the many complexities of her daily life. Mya is not only a full-time business executive and non-profit organization leader--she is an aunt, sister of two younger siblings and advocate for animal rights and children. When ref lecting on her motivation for sharing happiness through her music she offers: “Life is short and you realize that the people you love have a limited time on this earth. Getting back to the essence of what life is and being happy is important for my soul to be intact. I find that doing things for others allows my soul to be in a great place.” q2 2014 | hope   29

Tasha Cobbs New Music & New Ministry by to n ya d i xo n

Recording artist Tasha Cobbs shares about her life in music and ministry Gospel recording artist Tasha Cobbs is known for her dynamic, powerful vocals and compelling, consuming worship. With an everexpanding ministry, Tasha can now add conference host and author to the list. Fresh off The iLead Escape, her first-led and hosted worship conference and the surprise release of her new book/manual, Tasha took a few minutes to let us know what’s going on in her world. 1. Although many of us enjoyed your music before the debut of your first official album “Grace,” the world has finally caught on. What are your thoughts on how God has elevated your ministry? One of my favorite scriptures talks about God rewarding the faithful. I honestly believe that God has placed his grace on the Tasha Cobbs Ministry because He can trust me to be faithful, submitted and accountable.

asking me to mentor them. I take mentorship very seriously! It was impossible for me to mentor each of these individuals one-on-one daily, so God told me to start a monthly conference call to teach and empower worship leaders all over the world.

3. This year afforded you the opportunity to win your first Grammy and Stellar Awards. What was it like to receive both awards in such a short time? I know they are awards, but to me it was rewarding. It’s just rewarding to know that “your labor is not in vain.” My ministry is not the popular type! I’m a worship leader (laughing). So, for that to be acknowledged is beyond amazing!

5. Additionally, your new book, Worship 101: Back to the Basics was just released. What is the heart of the book? Why did you want to write it? I’m so excited about the recent release of Worship 101! It’s literally a compilation of lessons I’ve learned throughout my years of leading in ministry. It’s called “Back to the Basics” because I believe we’ve gotten so far away from the basics of why we do what we do and the proper ways of doing what we’re called to do.

3. If you had to pick one song off “Grace,” which one really takes you directly into worship mode? I would have to say “Grace.” It’s my song of gratitude for God’s unfailing love! He’s so amazing! Wow!

6. God is certainly enlarging and expanding your ministry. What’s on the horizon for you this summer? This summer, I’m focused on preparing for my next project. I’m writing songs and hearing God for what He desires for me to release next!

4. You have a ministry called iLead. Why did you start it and what is its purpose? About three years ago, I had so many worship leaders reaching out

Cobbs is also the worship pastor at the dReam Center Church of Atlanta, as well as the worship leader for the young adult division of the Full Gospel Baptist Fellowship.

With sunny skies and high temperatures taking over the dreadful cold from the winter, there’s no doubt that you’ll be aching to set aside your work for awhile and enjoy the weather. Here’s the top five things to keep you entertained and on the go this summer.

Nothing says summer fun quite like a sizzling dance beat to keep the party going long after the sun goes down. Jennifer Lopez’s eighth studio album, A.K.A., is sure to do all that and more. Featuring production and songwriting by big names like Diplo and Ryan Tedder, and collaborations with huge artists such as Iggy Azalea, Pitbull, and Nas, A.K.A. will have you dancing the night away. Lopez has been putting out singles from the album since January, and with saucy rhythms and catchy lyrics, we’re sure this one will be the soundtrack to your summer. The album is set to drop June 17, but until then, you can jam out to “I Luh Ya Papi” and “First Love.”

4 3 2 1

Another book to check out coming in June is Chevy Stevens’ mystery novel, “That Night.” The story follows thirty-four year old Toni Murphy, who was just granted parole after being wrongfully convicted for her sister’s murder. Now, out prison, she must learn to adjust to the outside world and restart her life. However, before she can move on, she has to find out what really happened to her sister, which may be the most terrifying thing of all. Look for this page turner on shelves June 17.

Looking for a good comedy to see with your girlfriends? Look no further than Think Like a Man Too. Sequel to 2012sThink Like a Man, this new segment follows all the couples from the first at a wedding in Las Vegas. However, as the weekend starts to go awry, and the group is put into some very compromising situations, plans for the big event might just be derailed Starring funny man, Kevin Hart, this one is sure to keep you laughing and entertained. Look for it in theaters June 20. Summer is never really complete without the plethora of summer weddings you’ll either be invited to or attend. If you’re in the same boat as all the other women who are convinced they’ll always be a bridesmaid and never a bride, pick up Jen Doll’s new book, “Save the Date: The Occasional Mortifications of a Serial Wedding Guest.” Doll recounts her own tales of being recurrent wedding guest, and gives some great advice on how to take a permanent wedding guest status and make it worthwhile.

What would summer be without the typical summer love story? Those looking for a little romance will definitely want to see The Fault in Our Stars, which hits theaters June 6. The film, adapted from Josh Green’s novel by the same name, follows two star crossed lovers, Hazel and Augustus, their time together limited by their cancer diagnoses. Shailene Woodley of Divergent and The Descendants, stars in this tearjerker, sure to be in line with other romance staples like The Notebook and Titanic.

Darlene Powell Garlington, Ph.D.

Married to a Stranger QUESTION:

I’ve been married 20 years and my husband has never taken me away on vacation or a weekend getaway. He works all the time and attends church faithfully. I often think of what it would be like if I was with someone else (even having an affair). I’m not sure if it would necessarily have to be sexual; I just want a man to show me some affection and attention. When I ask him about going away, he always uses the excuse that he has no money or I’m a woman that’s never satisfied. But how can I be satisfied when he never does anything for me? Not asking for much. Is this God’s will for my life? Don’t I deserve better? Really need some advice here. ~ Jalisa - Chicago, Illinois

RESPONSE:

Although your husband appears to be committed to your marriage, he is emotionally unavailable. I’m impressed with your attempts to communicate your needs, and you certainly deserve affection and attention. As you noted, after 20 years of marriage, a weekend getaway certainly isn’t a lot for which to ask. However, please don’t act on your thoughts of seeking attention from someone else. It will only lead to confusion and create additional problems. An emotional affair can be very damaging to a marriage and typically leads to a sexual relationship. Have you ever sought guidance from your pastor? Perhaps, he or a male friend whom your husband respects may be able to get through to him. Money appears to be an issue from your husband’s perspective. You might try to surprise him by planning a weekend excursion that requires neither his input nor financial contribution. Incorporate something that he really enjoys. For example, attend a sporting event and then spend the weekend at a hotel. Sometimes, when we change our approach, we get a different response. Although it is unfair, your husband may perceive you as nagging him. Therefore, instead of constantly requesting what you want, try giving him what he wants to ultimately get what you want. Now, let’s address some deeper underlying issues. You obviously have strong values and you know God loves you, so His will for your life is certainly not for you to be unhappy. When circumstances in our lives are less than satisfactory, we are still able to control our behavior and emotional reaction to them. Additionally, no one person can make us happy or fulfill all of our needs. Continue to communicate with your husband by being assertive and open and honest. Show him unconditional love by initiating quality time together. However, also explore ways to bring greater personal joy and fulfillment into your life by engaging in positive outlets, hobbies and spirituallyenriching activities.

Practical Love Advice for the

21 Century st

Women by j oa n n e l eflo r e

34  hope | q2 2014

Sh a r ing hu mor a nd compassion helps couples survive through new book The Real Deal on Love and Men A woman has got to have a little spunk and sass if she expects to keep the attention of an international audience while working in the male-dominated advertising and media industries. As an author and TV personality, Michelle McKinney Hammond has had no problem influencing a crowd, having reached thousands of people through her authoring of over 40 book titles. Her most recent book, The Real Deal on Love and Men, offers relationship advice with an evangelical twist to modern-day scenarios as proposed by questions from readers. After recently flying in from a rehearsal for a rock band she manages, Hammond sat down with HOPE for a candid conversation about her humbling experiences in love.

friction that happens during a typical love tango. Simple notions like knowing what deal breakers a person has before they commit or expect another person to do is vital. Her recent book speaks of deal breakers as “the must haves and can’t stands” - situations that are hard to compromise on even after a couple has committed to marriage. Hammond contests that honesty is the first rule to employ to determine individual deal breakers. Being involved in a relationship is more enjoyable when a person pays attention and is sensitive to the other person’s needs, Hammond says. According to Hammond’s faith-informed perspective, friction is just a simple result of not understanding or misinterpreting a mate’s love language.

She’s been in long-term relationships that essentially tested her faith, but her ability to reflect on her personal choices has allowed room for positive growth and character development along the way. Hammond openly talks about the importance of honesty and humor in relationships, offering practical advice on how these tips can lead to happiness in relationships.

“If you have something you really value, that is not going to change after you say, “I do.” Don’t torture the other person for not meeting your needs. Don’t create unnecessary friction in your relationship by not communicating your needs!” Hammond urged. “If the person is always giving to you, then that probably is how they love. You have to clue in to exactly what it is that’s important.”

“The essence of relationships have to be grounded in communication,” Hammond shares. “Ask questions and listen for answers instead of assuming things. If you want to know what’s on your man’s mind, go ask your girlfriend and do the opposite!”

It doesn’t get more practical than this ladies and gents.

The mere fact that she is transparent - yet humorous - reveals that she understands how humility can determine the future of anyone’s ability to have a healthy love relationship. Hammond joked about being the friend growing up who was always giving advice without others asking for it. She believes that her mentor was the main influence for writing her first book, What to Do Until Love Finds You (1997). “My first book was based on personal experiences. I wrote copy for 30-second ads in the past and 200 pages later, my life changed,” Hammond explains. “I was always being pushed by my mentor to write and speak, but neither of them was I expecting to do on such a platform.” After leaving the advertising industry, working for major corporations such as McDonalds, Coca Cola and Ford Motor Companies, Hammond took her talents to the stage with acting and singing. Simultaneously publishing books, she soon learned that she enjoyed expressing her faith and experiences to a broader audience. Much of her expertise developed from personal experiences, shedding light on the practical advice she shared for couples. “You can’t take yourself seriously in relationships because you lose the joy of the relationship that way,” Hammond reveals. “A sense of humor goes a long way. If you’re able to have joy, then you will likely avoid drama.” Hammond offered even more logical tokens on how to avoid or limit

Hammond learned how to approach the daunting feats of love by changing her mentality about the obstacles she’s faced throughout her life, having gone through a series of disappointing relationships and losing a mate to gun violence while living in Chicago. Despite the fears of not being able to carry on in love, Hammond has used her ability to overcome obstacles by, not believing in them as a roadblock, but a stepping stone instead. Having this epiphany was a direct result of her past tumultuous experiences seeking male affection. Hammond was eventually directed to live her life with a veil of spiritual guidance, which changed her message into ministry some years later. Now living in Ghana, Africa, Hammond has become a globally loved relationship genie, sharing her truth with audiences from London to South Africa. She contests that although some African audiences are much more conservative in sharing relationship experiences, she plans to host a talk show based on the trails of love soon to air in 47 cities overseas. Meanwhile, Hammond enjoys the luxury of a less-stressful lifestyle and the loyalty of patrons she encounters on the street. She is currently working on her next book, which she says is written from the viewpoint of women in the Bible who experienced modern-day relationship problems. She plans to offer conclusions based on what she feels the women of the Bible think a 21st century woman deals with, with a new twist. “This new project is full of contemporary situations because I think sometimes, we read the Bible and think it’s too far removed,” Hammond admits. “But the truth is they did go through what we are dealing with. God has something to say about everything we do-- even now.”

It Ain’t Easy Drinking Greens…

3 Easy Ways to Detox Your Body at Home by to n ya peel e Many women swear by the health and fitness benefits of detoxing through extended periods of fasting and juicing. The truth is that a healthy body is capable of cleansing toxins and other impurities out of its system if consistently nourished with enough fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and clean water. In fact, a properly fueled body is a healing machine. The best thing we can do to lend our body a helping hand in the detox department is to keep certain foods and pollutants out of our environment in the first place. A daily green juice or a brief fast is a great way to transition to healthier lifestyle habits that promote weight loss, healing and overall wellness. Here are three more easy and budget-friendly ways to start detoxing your body at home!

1

2

Chill with a glass of warm lemon water

Move over coffee, hello warm lemon water! You can have coffee later, but for starters, run a cup of hot water through your coffee maker and add a few slices of fresh lemon. The citric acid in the lemons jumpstarts your body’s cleansing process and helps to break down fat. If you’re trying to lose weight, you might want to give this one a try.

3

Have a bite to eat

You are not only what you eat, but also what you don’t eat. Paying close attention to your dietary habits can make all the difference in your detox program. For starters, limit your intake of processed meats, refined carbs, sweets and junk foods while boosting your intake of fresh fruit, veggies, legumes and water. Simply by eating healthier you are providing your body with all the tools it needs to stay healthy, lean and clean.

soak in an Epsom salt bath Sitting in hot bath water helps draw toxins out of your body. The heat brings toxins to your skin’s surface. Epsom salt in particular aids the detoxification process by causing you to sweat, thus release toxins from your skin.

36  @hopemag | q2 2014

Detoxing diets are very popular and have been used for centuries. The experience should not be about deprivation, but should be seen as a whole-body experience to embrace resting, restoring and rejuvenating the body. By eliminating toxins and emphasizing healthy nutrients, you can protect your body from disease and renew your body’s ability to heal and embrace optimal health.

Your Best Ever

family reunion

Potluck

How to organize a successful, lifelong memory creating family reunion potluck. by l e a n n r i ce Summer memories recall lazy days filled with fireflies, sweet tea, flipflops, sticky watermelon fingers, and the smell of backyard BBQ grills and freshly mowed lawns. Things move slowly in south during the summer months. They have to. It’s hot and humid! The air is thicker and harder to move through. A southern gal can work up quite a “glisten” if she isn’t careful. It’s important to slow down, plant yourself in a rocking chair on a front porch and sip sweet tea as you share neighborhood gossip, er… I mean news, with your best friend. Summer is also the time for family reunions and potlucks! If your family is scattered across the country, an annual reunion is the perfect time for reconnecting and sharing milestone events, any hardships, and achievements that occurred over the year. It also ensures each generation shares life stories with the generation that follows. Gathering as a family preserves your family history so where you came from isn’t lost. Reunions also provide you with an opportunity to reach out to family members with hope and encouragement. Perhaps your sister or a distant cousin has experienced a rough year. Use this time to show support, to pray as a family, and to let them know they are not alone. The same is true for friends, neighborhoods, co-workers or your larger community. Organize a potluck as an outreach tool, bringing people together around great food for conversations, laughter and prayer, hope and encouragement. These gatherings don’t have to be as involved. They can be as simple as burgers and hotdogs on the grill with everyone bringing a side dish or dessert. After the meal, spend time really getting to know each other. This will create support groups for years to come. To make this summer’s family reunion your best one ever, I’ve put together my Top Ten Tips for organizing a potluck as well as some of my favorite, tried-and-true recipes so you will be the superstar this summer! 38  hope | q2 2014

Wild Rice Salad A wonderfully unique salad. Because you make it the day before you serve it, it’s great to take to a potluck. It also holds up very well, lasting a few days in the refrigerator without getting mushy like most salads

Makes 8-10 servings Ingredients

/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper 4 green onions, thinly sliced 1 cup uncooked wild rice, prepared as directed on package and cooled 1 Red Delicious apple, cored and chopped 1 Golden Delicious apple, cored and chopped 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1 tablespoon butter 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Preparation

In a small bowl combine the oil, vinegar, mustard, garlic, salt, and pepper with a whisk. Stir in the onions. In a large bowl combine the prepared rice, apples, and cranberries. In a small skillet melt the butter over medium heat. Add the walnuts and sauté for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the walnuts to the rice mixture. Pour the dressing over the rice and stir to combine. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Top Ten Tips for Your Best Ever Family Reunion Potluck Plan! Plan! Plan! The key to any successful event is to plan well and the same is true of a potluck. It may sound silly to “plan” an event known for a random assortment of covered dishes but, without planning, a table filled with several batches of potato salad is inevitable. Here are my top ten tips for planning your best ever family reunion potluck and, of course, impressing Aunt Busybody and Cousin Know-it-All.

5

Stay Connected: Create a reunion Facebook group page to keep everyone excited and updated. Invite all members to the group page, even those unable to attend. It keeps everyone engaged and provides one central place for communicating, sharing recipes and pictures and, of course, some friendly family teasing. Make sure to collect every family members email address before or during the reunion!

1

6

2

7

Form a Committee: Everyone is busy these days so form a committee so you can divide and conquer the tasks. Ask family members if they are interested in helping with the reunion planning then connect with each other to discuss the details and divvy up the tasks.

Select a Location: Consider travel distances for all family members when selecting a location for your family reunion. If everyone is scattered, find a location that is the most central. If most family members live relatively close but one family lives quite a distance away, hold the reunion close to home and consider having those who can, chip in to help with travel expenses for the family required to travel if travel expenses would be a hardship for them. If someone in the family has a yard large enough to fit everyone, that’s a perfect and free location for your reunion. You may also want to look at area parks and lakes with large picnic areas. Keep in mind you want a covered area in case of rain, and you want to make sure bathrooms are available.

3

Send Invitations: An invitation makes an event seem more special. You can make your own invitations and mail them – you know… the old fashioned way. There is something wonderful about finding an invitation in your mailbox. Make sure you request RSVPs. You can also send invitations online through the free site www.evite.com. You create your own invitation using a wide variety of graphics and images and send them out using email addresses. Once the evite is opened the recipient can RSVP and add the event to their online calendar. You can also send reunion updates with one click of the button.

4

Plan the Food: Even potlucks require a bit of menu planning. You want all courses represented but you don’t want a bunch of duplicate dishes so some organization is required. An easy way to do this is to use a free online service like www.signupgenious.com. You plug in the type of dishes (main, side, casserole, etc) and the number of each type of dish needed. Family members choose what they want to bring, adding their name as well as the name of their dish next to the item so no one else brings the same dish. You end up with a well-balanced potluck! For planning purposes, you should include the following categories on your list: snacks and appetizers, main dish protein, main dish casserole, vegetarian entrée, kids entrée, vegetable, starch, salad, dessert, condiments, and beverages. (Any necessary serving utensils should accompany the dish.) You also need plates, napkins, utensils, cups, ice, salt and pepper. And don’t forget to include the number of guests and the amount of each item you need. (i.e. 6 salads, 4 desserts, 50 plates, etc.)

Plan Activities: Gathering may be activity enough but team games like three-leg races, tug-o-war, sack races, red rover, etc. creates a whole lot of laughter and lifelong memories. Come up with a list of games for all ages and put someone in charge of gathering any needed supplies. Consider silly prizes to add to the fun. Music: Make sure you have music in the background. If you have a musical family, gather and sing or play instruments together. If not, a simple radio or CD player with favorite upbeat music works great and will set the tone for your event.

8

Capture the Memories: We live in an age of technology. Just about everyone has a smart phone with a camera making it easy to share photos instantly. To make sure you capture each event, every face, all the smiles and laughter, and all the disasters (you know – someone falling out of a chair or dropping a full dish of food), assign someone, or a team, to document everything. Consider a video camera for games and activities. This is also a great way to share the reunion with any family members who were unable to attend. Once the reunion is over, post photos and videos on your group Facebook page or create a scrapbook and send to everyone. And don’t forget to take a group photo. If you have a large family you will need to gather on steps or on an incline in order to get everyone in the picture. Make sure to keep the outakes!

9

Leftovers and Cleanup: The rule for each dish needs to be “you bring it in, you take it out.” But, if everyone loves Aunt Betty’s famous mac n cheese and by some miracle there’s some left, you should have plastic containers and bags available. Include these items on your signup chart so someone provides them. To make cleanup easy, have everyone bring their dish in something disposable or save plastic grocery bags so they can take their dirty dish home with them. Make sure you have paper towels and trash bags available for easy cleanup. These can go on your signup chart too.

10

Consider Creating a Family Cookbook: A great way to keep memories alive and to pass on family recipes is to collect the recipes in a book. Ask everyone to email you a copy of the recipe they will be bringing along with any story that might go with it. Take a picture of the dish at the reunion. Once the event is over, have someone gather all the recipes, stories and pictures and combine them into a book. Put a group picture on the front along with the date. Make copies for everyone. Put one together every year, maybe as part of a scrapbook. What a treasure this will be for the generations that follow. q2 2014 | hope   39

Crispy Southern Fried Chicken

Now, if we are honest, the best part of any family gathering is the food. Reunions are known for sharing (and fighting over) heirloom recipes. If you don’t have a family recipe to bring to your reunion, here are some of my favorite southern potluck recipes so you can start your own traditions.

An overflowing platter of crispy fried chicken graces the table of every Southern family reunion and church potluck. The chicken is always provided by the same woman and she will be beaming with pride as she carries her famous fried chicken to the table.

Crispy Southern Fried Chicken

will need to turn the chicken at least once. Remove chicken from refrigerator 2 hours before you are ready to fry. Combine flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, Old Bay, paprika, onion powder and remaining salt, pepper and cayenne. Place in a paper bag or in a shallow dish. Place a cooling rack over a baking sheet. Lift 1 piece of chicken out of the buttermilk and let excess buttermilk drip off. Transfer to the flour mixture to coat completely then lay on the rack. Repeat until all chicken has been coated. Place the rack in the refrigerator, uncovered for 2 hours. (It’s ok if it sits longer.) Remove from the refrigerator 15-20 minutes before frying. Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Place a cooling rack over a baking dish and set on the counter next to where you will fry the chicken. Fill deep heavy skillet with peanut oil, high enough to come halfway up the chicken when frying. Heat over medium-high heat until the oil is 350 degrees. (If you don’t have a thermometer, take a pinch of flour and drop it into the oil. If it starts to sizzle and bubble around the edges your oil is hot enough.) Use tongs to carefully arrange chicken skin side down in the hot oil. Don’t crowd them. You want space in between the pieces. You will probably have two batches. Fry for 8 minutes or until deep golden on the bottom. Turn the pieces over and fry another 7 or 8 minutes or until deep golden brown on the bottom. If browning too quickly, turn the heat down. If it browns too fast the inside won’t have time to cook. Remove chicken from the skillet and place on the rack over the baking sheet. Place in the oven to keep warm while you fry the rest of the chicken.

Makes 6-8 servings Ingredients

4 chicken legs 4 chicken thighs Salt and pepper for seasoning chicken 5 cups buttermilk 3 teaspoons salt, divided 3 teaspoons black pepper, divided 3 teaspoons cayenne pepper, divided ( feel free to add more if you like your chicken extra-spicy) 2 cups all-purpose flour 3 tablespoons cornstarch 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning 1 teaspoon paprika teaspoon onion powder Peanut oil for frying

Preparation

Pat the chicken with paper towels to dry. Sprinkle with salt and pepper then place in a dish deep enough to hold chicken and buttermilk. Whisk together buttermilk, 2 teaspoons salt, 2 teaspoons pepper and 2 teaspoons cayenne. Pour over chicken. Cover and place in refrigerator overnight. If the chicken is not completely submerged in the buttermilk you 40  hope | q2 2014

Cheese Overload Macaroni and Cheese If you want to be the one known for her famous Macaroni and Cheese, this recipe will make you a rock star. There are six cheeses in my mac and cheese! That’s right . . . SIX! I was up to five, which was fairly impressive. Then, right before I started mixing my cooked pasta with the sauce ingredients, I reached for the cream cheese sitting on the top shelf of my refrigerator. It called out to me and, well . . . I just had to do it. Make this for your reunion and family will bow down before you in admiration and trying to bribe you for the recipe. Hold out for a trip to a tropical island. Trust me. It’s that good.

Makes 8 servings Ingredients

1 pound pasta (elbow, spirals, etc.) 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 heaping teaspoons dry mustard 1 teaspoon kosher or sea salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper A few dashes of ground nutmeg A few dashes to 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (depending on your taste) 3/4 cup melted butter, divided 5 large eggs, beaten 2 cups half-and-half 1 cup heavy cream 1 3/4 cups grated Parmesan cheese, divided 3 cups shredded sharp Cheddar, divided 3 cups shredded Monterey Jack, divided 1 cup shredded Swiss 2 tablespoons butter, softened 4 ounces cream cheese, cut into cubes, softened 3/4 cup Italian-style panko bread crumbs

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a deep 9 x 13-inch casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray. Cook the pasta 1 minute less than directed on the package. As it cooks, combine the flour, dry mustard, salt, pepper, nutmeg, and cayenne in a small bowl. Use a whisk to blend and then whisk in 1/2 cup of the melted butter until there are no lumps. In a large bowl combine the beaten eggs, half-and-half, and heavy cream. Whisk the flour mixture into the egg mixture until combined. Stir in 1 cup of the Parmesan cheese, 2 cups of the sharp Cheddar, 2 cups of the Monterey Jack, and the Swiss. After you have drained the pasta, place the 2 tablespoons softened butter and the cream cheese in the hot pot (off of the heat) so that it begins to melt. Once it begins to melt, add the drained (but still hot) pasta to the pot and stir to coat the pasta with the butter and cream cheese. (Please pause just to gaze upon the creaminess!) Once the pasta is coated, add the egg and flour mixture and stir to combine. Pour the entire mixture into the casserole dish and then top with the remaining 1 cup of Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses. In a small bowl combine the bread crumbs with the remaining 3/4 cup Parmesan cheese. Stir in 1/4 cup of the melted butter. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the top of the mac and cheese. Bake for 45 minutes or until bubbly and beginning to brown. Turn your broiler on and broil for ONLY 1–2 minutes. Keep a close eye on this. You want the top to be lightly golden brown and crunchy . . . not burned. It will happen very quickly, so stand right beside your oven and watch it closely. Remove from the oven and let sit for 15 minutes.

Cool and Creamy Banana Pudding My favorite banana pudding recipe is the one my mom has been making since I was in middle school. I’ve never found a recipe I liked as well as this one, and everyone who tastes it feels the same way. They toss their grandmother’s traditional baked version out the window and never look back. This banana pudding gets raves every time I bring it to a potluck or take it to a family along with a hot meal. When I bring it to church functions, it’s always one of the first things to go. This recipe is very flexible. You can layer it in a baking dish as the instructions call for, but you can also make it in a pretty footed trifle dish or make individual servings in disposable plastic cups (perfect for reunions), or other containers like mason jars for a pretty presentation.

Makes 8-10 servings Ingredients

3 (3.4-ounce) boxes instant vanilla pudding 5 cups 2% or whole milk 1 cup sour cream 1 (11-ounce) box vanilla wafers About 6 bananas (ripe but not too ripe—this is better if your bananas aren’t starting to turn brown) 1 (8-ounce) carton frozen whipped topping, thawed

Preparation

In a large bowl combine the instant pudding, milk, and sour cream and whisk until smooth. Set aside to thicken. Once the pudding has thickened (about 5 minutes) you can assemble your banana pudding. Cover the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch casserole dish with a single layer of vanilla wafers. Slice the bananas and cover each cookie with a banana slice. Spoon a third of the pudding over the bananas. Repeat the layers two more times. Cover the third layer of pudding with the whipped topping. Cover with plastic wrap (use toothpicks to keep the wrap from sticking to the topping) and refrigerate overnight. q2 2014 | hope   41

Shedding the Weight and

Keeping It Off

Key secrets and kitchen utensils to maintain your New Year’s resolution by ch ef h a r d e t t e h a r r i s

Congratulations, you kept your promise to lose those extra pounds for the New Year. As the pounds continue to melt away, continue to think about affordable and time-saving ways to keep it off. If you are a busy mom or your schedule doesn’t allow you to put a lot of thought into what you eat, it’s easy to grab an unhealthy snack or meal. Before you know it, the pounds start to creep back on and all of your discipline and hard work has been in vain. Planning ahead, organizing your kitchen and stocking your kitchen with the right items will help you maintain your weight loss. Schedule a time to prepare your meals. It only takes 30 minutes to an hour to prepare your snacks, lunch or dinner. The best time is in the evenings while preparing dinner or after dinner. You’re already in the kitchen and this would be the ideal time to prepare your breakfast, snacks, lunch or dinner for the next day. If you don’t have the time to do all of them, choose the meal that you find is the hardest to remain consistent with in your eating plan. By preparing your meals in your kitchen, you are able to control the calories, fat, salt and sugar content of each meal. For example, dinner time may be hectic and focused on what the kids like. This would definitely be one of the meals prepared in advance. After serving the kids pizza, or fried chicken and mashed potatoes, you can open the refrigerator and pull out a low-calorie meal you prepared in advance for yourself.

Organize your pantry AMake room in the pantry for the items you use on your diet plan. Put those items together in the very front of the pantry so you aren’t tempted to use unhealthy items just because you see them first. Prepare your meals using only those items. 42  hope | q2 2014

Get Healthy in

Living Color

A colorful diet equals a healthy diet by s au n d r a da lto n - s m i t h m . d.

What color is your diet? Unfortunately, most of our pantries are filled with quick and convenient beige and white foods. Beige is a great versatile color for a wardrobe, but it should never be the focal point of your diet. Life should be colorful. How boring would it be if our days were limited to only a few choices? Imagine spending every day for the rest of your life being only allowed to experience ten different things. That wouldn’t be living, but rather a very slow death. We wouldn’t imagine limiting our variety of life experiences, yet most of us greatly limit variety in the foods we eat. Each trip to the grocery store results in the same purchases week in and week out. What makes life fun is the clean slate we get each day to try something different and venture outside of your comfort zones. Living is more fun when there is variety and spring is the perfect time to spice up your menu with a splash of living color. Each color group has its own health benefits. With all these choices, you will improve the likelihood of sticking with a healthy eating plan, losing weight and improving your immune system. If you are in need of a health boost, try eating the rainbow.

Red

Apples, strawberries, red peppers, cherries, raspberries, pomegranates, guava, watermelon, tomatoes and pink grapefruit. Red fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, including an important one called lycopene, which is associated with health benefits like decreased risk for heart disease and cancer.

Orange

Oranges, carrots, sweet potatoes, clementines, tangerines, cantaloupe, mango and peaches. The fruits and vegetables in this group have large amounts of vitamin C and beta-carotene. These nutrients contain strong anti-inflammatory properties, help lower blood pressure and improve your vision.

Yellow

Bananas, corn, squash, yellow peppers, grapefruit and pineapple. Yellow foods are rich in carotenoids. They improve the functioning of the respiratory system, making them a great choice for those with asthma and other lung problems. They also decrease inflammation in the joints, thus helping you maintain an active lifestyle for years to come.

Green

Avocado, asparagus, grapes, spinach, broccoli, kale, collard greens, celery, arugula, romaine lettuce, green peppers, kiwi, pears, peas, green beans, cucumbers, brussels sprouts and zucchini. These green giants are nutrition-rich powerhouses packed full of fiber, vitamins and anti-oxidants. Their highfiber content improves digestion and promotes gastrointestinal health. Additional health benefits include stabilization of your blood sugars as well as its effect on lowering your cholesterol.

Blue

Blueberries, blue corn and juniper berries. Research shows it’s smart to eat more blues. Studies show that blueberries may cause brain cells to respond better to incoming messages and even lead to the growth of new cells. Munch on this group to help improve your concentration and creativity.

Fit Baby Bump There’s No Better Time to Start! by l i s a m a r i e m e t zl er Lindsay Zuiderveen, wife and mother of three young boys, wasn’t active during her first pregnancy. “I looked and felt terrible for most of the pregnancy and a long time after delivery.” When she was pregnant with her second baby, she was already fairly active. “I noticed a difference and knew that I needed to stay dedicated in any future pregnancies. So when my third baby was on the way, I kept up with my regular workout routine, modifying when necessary.” On some days, even the healthiest women will experience tiredness. When those days hit for Lindsay, she still exercised but would just do part of her routine instead of the full one. While pregnancy may not be a typical transition into exercise, there is no reason not to start just because you’re pregnant! Check with your doctor first for any restrictions. If you haven’t been active, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend just five minutes per day and adding five minutes per week until you reach 30 minutes per day.

Maintain Your Fitness flow on the Road

by r en ee wi g g i n s

Travel is hard on a body. Fatigue and depleted energy are the first battles a woman has to face when she travels for business regularly or with family on vacations. It all seems exciting in a Facebook update or on Instagram, but both types of travel are work and the first casualty is fitness. Be proactive

Be creative

Search your smartphone app store for an app that helps you identify gymnasiums near lodging that provide day passes. Gymsurfing and GymPoints are two such apps, while OmFinder will help you locate yoga studios that offer day passes. Consult with a personal trainer to learn how to exercise in your hotel room, and how to make the best use of hotel gyms and swimming pools. Request exercise tips that utilize your body weight and calisthenics for routines in your room. For extended business travel, use a delivery service to send your light free weights, jump rope, resistance bands and other exercise gear, including your running shoes, ahead of you. This will remove the worry of taking up precious carry-on luggage space. Send the box back home before you leave or to your next travel destination.

Walking is the easiest and best exercise for travelers. However, time doesn’t always permit walking during daylight hours when it is safest. Be creative and resourceful. Utilize the stairs as much as possible and avoid using elevators for short trips up or down in buildings. Park your car on the far end of a lot to walk the distance to a building’s entrance. If you’re relying on taxis or have a driver, request to be let out a block from your destination to get in extra walking time. Purchase two one liter bottles of water to use as free weights to tone arms and shoulders. Do old-fashioned gym class stretches and waist twists as you watch television or are waiting in line to see an exhibit.

Be mindful Eat well, if not better, than you do at home while you are on the road. Check hotel menus ahead of time to see their healthiest offerings, and check surrounding restaurants for healthy fare. If you reduce the amount of exercise you are getting, then compensate with a better than average diet. Also, get plenty of rest so that increased fatigue does not sabotage your exercise and eating plans. Bad travel habits can easily replace good home habits, so be proactive, creative and resourceful, and be mindful when you travel for business or pleasure. Spring. The time of year where nature shakes off the

frigid hug of an excruciating winter and opens its arms to the warm embrace of a sun-kissed spring. It may not be the beginning of the year, but something about spring feels br and new and causes a desire to unearth a fresh wave of life and action. It’s the perfect time to take an inventory of the first quarter of the year and re-assess your goals.

ible teacher Kasey Van Norman takes you through the raw emotions she experienced when her faith was deeply tested through her personal battle with cancer. This book will inspire hope in any woman who has struggled through those raw-faith moments with God.

Here’s a few tips to jumpstart your happy ending:

1

Ask Questions: You may be wondering who to question, but the only person with answers regarding your life is you! Now is the time to ask yourself: Am I happy with the first few months of this year? What have I accomplished? What do I need to change in order to remain on track for my goals this year? Depending on what you have going on, the questions may vary, but the goal is to assess and strengthen your plan. Put it in writing. Making a visual list will make things much more concrete and realistic.

2

Get Active: Let’s get real. Most people start off the year strong with exercise, but many of us let old habits and the weather become a deterrent. Now that the warm weather is here, get up and get active! Go for a jog in the park or sign up for a fun new class that you have been wanting to try. Many websites offer great deals on fitness classes and healthy alternatives. Exercise is not only good for the way you look, but it’s great for the way you feel by releasing endorphins and alleviating stress. There are so many great benefits to becoming active, so get up and get going. When you feel better, your actions align in a positive way!

3

Beef Up Your Social Calendar: With so much technology out there, we have taken for granted the lost art of personal contact and conversation. Now that the weather is more inviting, make it a point to attend events that will increase your social net worth. You never know who you will meet and what may come of the contacts you make. No matter how great you are or how wonderful your product/business is, no one will know if you don’t make yourself visible.
