Perth Theatre struts its stuff with sparky drama The Little Foxes – a spirited Dynasty meets Gone with the Wind – kicking off a great run of shows. There’s bitter sweet comedy with Humble Boy, Scottish class drama Fergus Lamont, and more than a few well-kent faces in the stirring regimental drama, Tunes of Glory. Classical music ranges from the slapstick fun of ChaplinOperas to the sublime Bach St John Passion and the free-falling Hot from New York day with Bang on a Can Allstars. Our Home+Away music strand pairs up two traditional greats, Wolfstone and Session A9, with visitors Mutenrohi and Altan. First time visits include Eddi Reader, Kris Kristofferson and on the comedy front, Jo Brand. Back by popular demand are The Complete Stone Roses, Carol Smillie in Vagina Monologues and a new show from delightfully revolting Circus of Horrors. For something different try our cool new audiosupper café club nights (see new media), snooker with Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O’Sullivan, or our Puppet and Animation Festival. Finally, looking ahead, musicals are the big story for summer 07. We have two big West End hits with Rat Pack smoothie swing singers in June and glamour-is-the-new-black High Society with Wayne Sleep in late July. Treat yourself – book ahead, dress up, do it in style! A night less ordinary.
Enjoy

Was Johann Sebastian Bach the greatest composer who ever lived? The sheer volume of first class music he wrote suggests so. And then there’s the whole question of his influence over the past 300 years – everyone from Mozart to DJ Spooky, from Beethoven to the Beatles has been touched by him.

Grey Galloway is an evocative, impressionistic tone poem that recalls the South West Scottish landscape of Sir John McEwen’s childhood in the late 19th century. Sir William Walton’s stunningly dynamic First Symphony is one of the finest composed by any English composer in the last hundred years. Barbara Dickson‘s singing career started in the folk scene around her native Fife in the sixties. Talented-spotted by a young Willy Russell, she sang in his award-winning musical, John, Paul, George, Ringo….and Bert. A guest residency on The Two Ronnies, and hit singles such as Answer Me, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, The Caravan Song and January, February soon followed.
40 years on, and the music of The Beatles remains as fresh and uplifting as ever. The classic songs that have inspired and influenced generations are performed with passion and reverence.
Barbara Dickson
14
In 1982, her duet with Elaine Paige, I Know Him So Well, spent several weeks at number one in the UK charts. Conferred with an O.B.E. in 2002, Barbara continues to pursue a successful acting career and recently enjoyed great success with her best of album, The Platinum Collection and has just released a collection of Beatles songs, Nothing’s Gonna Change My World.
Drawing on an extensive repertoire of hits and album tracks, the band performs totally live, producing a fully authentic representation of the music. The band are all accomplished musicians, but it is their vocal abilities that have most impressed critics. They are all born and brought up in Liverpool, and this gives them their seemingly effortless accuracy in their interpretation of the Fab Four’s catalogue.

When: Sat 31 Mar, 7.30pm Where: Perth Concert Hall Price: £22.50/£19/£16
Kristofferson’s story is fairly well known: he had a dream—along with the necessary talent and ambition—to become a songwriter. After turning down a teaching position at West Point, the Rhodes Scholar hoped to get his foot in the door of the music business by taking a job as a janitor at Columbia Records.
Joe’s big break came in 1981 as a finalist on London Weekend Television’s Search for a Star which lead to appearances at the London Palladium and The Talk of the Town. TV specials in the UK and USA followed. Joe’s repertoire of voices is endless and includes hundreds of the world’s top singers. He is perhaps best known for his impersonation of Shirley Bassey who has commented, “Joe can do me better than I can do myself”. www.joelongthorne.com
Soon after arriving in Nashville he was receiving huge acclaim and being hailed as one of America’s clearest and most important voices, having penned such classics as Me and Bobby McGee, Sunday Morning Coming Down, For the Good Times, and many others. His latest album, This Old Road, has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, and shows the master is still in full control of his craft. www.kriskristofferson.com

Christy Moore has been the key figure in Irish roots music for more than four decades. As vocalist with the two most influential Irish bands ever, Planxty and Moving Hearts, he broke new ground for Irish music throughout the 70s and 80s.
Curtis Stigers – vocals/sax Matthew Fries – piano Phil Palombi – bass Keith Hall - drums
As a solo artist, his mix of traditional influences with contemporary observations of the turbulent social and political aspects of Irish life has seen him become a massively popular performer without losing any of his anti-establishment edge. The intensity, humour and raw emotion of his live shows is absolutely not to be missed. www.christymoore.com
Hot on the heels from appearing on BBC’s Just The Two Of Us, platinum selling Stigers returns to the UK with his sensational US trio. He shot to international fame with hits I Wonder Why and You’re All That Matters To Me. In recent years he has established himself at the forefront of a new generation of jazz singers. With one of the most distinctive voices in music, the singer/saxophonist/songwriter expands the jazz repertoire mixing his own original material with some of the most influential songwriters of our time. “A bebop Ray Charles”

Session A9
Irish traditional band, Altan, are recognised as giant figures within the world of folk music, rising from modest beginnings in Donegal sessions over twenty years ago to sell over 1 million albums and fill concert halls from Dublin to Sydney. Led by charismatic fiddle player and singer, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, the band’s twin fiddles and accordion are underpinned by guitar and bouzouki in scorching jigs and reels, offset by soulful songs in their native Gaelic and some ballads in English. www.altan.ie

Session A9’s mouth-watering frontline features four of the best fiddlers to emerge from northern Scotland in the last two decades - Charlie McKerron (Capercaillie), Kevin Henderson (Boys of The Lough), Gordon Gunn and Adam Sutherland (Peatbog Faeries). Backed by a dream team rhythm section of Brian McAlpine (keyboards), Iain Copeland (percussion), Tim Edey (guitar) and Kris Drever (guitar, vocals), they are one of the most exciting groups to emerge in many years. www.sessiona9.com

Dynasty meets Gone with the Wind in this gripping tale of greed, power and corruption, famously brought to life by Bette Davis in the 40s movie of the same name. The setting is America’s deep south, postCivil War. The focus is the prosperous but greedy Hubbard family — cold-hearted Regina and her scheming brothers, Regina’s ailing husband and her naïve daughter, Alexandra.
Plans to build a cotton mill on their land signal a chance for greater wealth. The sibling rivalry that ensues shows human nature at its worst as the family plot against each other and try to outwit each other in their frenzied fortune hunting. Goodies, baddies, winners, losers — it’s sophisticated soap! A great American play of the last century.

As the title suggests this Viennese Operetta, which has been dubbed the greatest of all musical comedies, is as light and bubbly as champagne. Dazzling costumes, wonderful waltzes and romantic melodies combine to recreate the elegance of 1890’s Paris society life. The course of true love is snared by comical intrigue and witty situations before the Merry Widow and her prince live happily ever after. A must for all who enjoy the musical stage.

A surprising, delightful comedy. 35 year old Felix Humble is a struggling Cambridge astro-physicist who has returned home for his father’s funeral. Felix struggles to accept his father’s death, made worse by the absence of any love from his mother.
Things get worse when Felix finds out his mother is an adulteress, contemplating marriage and planning to get rid of any memory of his belated father — including his beloved bees. There are surprise revelations in store and Felix soon realises that his search for unity in the world must begin at home.
Too upset to go through with the funeral speech, his youth-obsessed mother, Flora, is furious with him.

Fergus Lamont by Robin Jenkins adapted by Gerry Mulgrew
Born in the slums in a town in the west of Scotland, at the turn of the 20th century, Fergus Lamont believes himself to be the illegitimate son of an artistocrat. He plans to reclaim his inheritance and re-position himself in the world as a soldier, a poet, and a member of the aristocracy. The story spans over 40 years in Fergus’ life, recounting his journey to the top and back down again.
When: Wed 21 - Sat 31 Mar 7.45pm, 2.30pm Sat matinee Where: Perth Theatre Price: Tue-Thu £15: £9, Fri-Sat £16: £9.50 Sat matinee £12.50: £8, child £6
see p57 It tells a tale of vanity, success, and betrayal, and shines its own cynical light on Scotland and the class issues of the day (and today).
33
Arguably one of the finest novels ever written in Scotland, Fergus Lamont has a tragic dimension as well as a mordant wit. Jenkins’ scathing humour offers a forensic exploration of the Scottish psyche.
