A thoroughly modern programme of exciting and challenging music. The Scottish premiere of Luis Bacalov’s Misa Tango – the music of the Mass in Latin American rhythm is sung in Spanish, with the distinguishing feature of the bandonéon (an old German accordion). Karl Jenkins’ Requiem is dedicated to his late father. The Mass has the usual Latin movements and draws from other cultures. There are five Japanese haiku death poems. Their text illustrates the Japanese view that nature’s cycle is synonymous with life. The orchestration is enhanced by the use of Japanese Daiko drums and (if we can find one!) an ancient Japanese wind instrument, the shakuhachi. £10; concessions £8

with his Big Band 50th Anniversary Tour Fri 9 May: 8pm Perth Concert Hall One of the great vocalists, Jack Jones makes a rare visit to the UK to celebrate half a century in showbusiness accompanied by his world-class 18-piece Big Band. Those five decades have garnered two Grammys, his own TV variety show, countless sellout world tours, regular Las Vegas engagements and 50 recorded albums (including 20 US Top 20 hits) – the latest a tribute to his great friend Tony Bennett. His stylish, elegant approach blends jazz, pop and swing to great effect on classic tracks such as Lollipops And Roses, Wives And Lovers, The Impossible Dream, The Race Is On, Lady, Call Me Irresponsible, What I Did For Love and the Love Boat theme as well as big band covers of more unlikely material like Light My Fire and Every Breath You Take.

Lose yourself in Reich’s 1971 masterpiece, Drumming, an hour of the most mesmerising music around. It is inspired by Reich’s discovery of West African drumming – to which he added his own New York sensibility – truly transcontinental fusion. The music is tough, so performances are few and far between. Colin Currie has assembled his dream team for this performance.

HOMEAWAY

Rebellion and rock ‘n’ roll have been strutting hand-in-hand for more than half a century, but only very rarely has their union involved real weapons and a painful struggle for survival. Tinariwen fought a rebellion in the early 1990s to win greater freedom and self-determination for the Touareg people of the southern Sahara. The fight was brief and bloody but it gave birth to a whole new style of desert music, powered by rolling rhythms and electric guitars. Tinariwen are originators, survivors, the Stones and the Clash of the Sahara rolled into one, and their roots rock rebellion of the soul is one of the most entrancing sounds to emerge from Africa in years.

Who better to pair Tinariwen with than Scotland’s own folkie renegades Shooglenifty. For more than a decade, they have been at the forefront of new Celtic music with a freewheeling blend of traditional tunes, world influences and irresistible rhythms delivered with blistering energy and a great sense of fun.

Bruce Fummey About the Jacobites Sat 23 Feb: 8pm Perth Theatre

In August 1745 the Stuart dynasty returned to Britain, in the shape of Bonnie Prince Charlie. In August 2007 Perthshire comedian Bruce Fummey returned to the Edinburgh Fringe with this year’s offering About the Jacobites. There were more laughs than in 1745 and nobody died, but the Jacobite period will provide the backdrop to irreverent levity and laughter. Bruce likes his comedy to have an educational bent and after last year’s sell-out About Tam O’Shanter, Bruce brings his crass, but self deprecating style to the brutal, romantic and laugh out loud funny period of Scottish history leading up to Culloden.

She is further enraged when she sees her boyfriend, Franz, flirting with this beautiful girl and having his affections repaid with a kiss. Of Mice and Men

by John Steinbeck Date:

John Steinbeck’s classic tale is brought to life in this emotive play with friendship at its core. Set against the backdrop of America’s great depression, Of Mice and Men conveys the struggle of two migrant farm-workers trying to start a new life in California and the strains placed on family and friendship. This dramatic work has achieved international acclaim in its big-screen productions and now returns to the stage in an evocative play directed by Perth’s own Ian Grieve. Horsecross Voices is a really popular and enjoyable evening of trying great music. Join us for this pick and mix of group singing styles. As well as learning vocal techniques and warm ups, you’ll sing a variety of musical styles including jazz, musicals, Scottish traditional, world and classical, with experts in each field. We welcome all levels, including newcomers to group singing, and music reading is not necessary. This is a drop in group so please come as often as you like.
