Piotr Anderszewski, piano/director Christopher George, director* The brilliant Polish pianist Anderszewski’s choice of solo concertos shows just how much music can change in 60 years. Bach’s piece could have been heard with one of his sons at the keyboard in the 1730s; Mozart’s K. 451 belongs to 1784 - the year when he made his name in Vienna with masterpiece after masterpiece, most of them designed to showcase his own considerable skills at the keyboard.

Mikhail Agrest, conductor Tasmin Little, violin The Polish composer Mieczyslaw Karlowicz, who died 100 years ago, is not a familiar name to today’s concert-goers, but his warmly passionate violin concerto certainly deserves to be better-known. Tasmin Little has championed it with the BBC SSO on record, and here is a welcome chance to hear her play it live. The second half focuses on colourful musical story-telling inspired by visual art from Respighi and Mussorgsky.

Dvorák imbued it with a festive atmosphere from the introductory roll of the timpani to the final jubilation. Requiem (Brahms did not like the ‘German’ often seen in the title) was premiered in Bremen in 1868. In May 1888 he wrote the present fifth movement in memory of his mother. £12; concessions £10

Szymanowski Górecki
Violin Concerto No1 Op.35 Symphony No 3, “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs” Op.36
One of the highlights of Polish Spring is the visit of the Filharmonia Pomorska from Perth’s twin town Bygdocsz. It is a full symphony orchestra in the grand Eastern European tradition - full blooded and dramatic. They bring a programme that opens in the exotic dream of Symanowski’s Violin Concerto before moving into the moving and spiritual world of Gorecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. This piece was a surprise hit when it was discovered by the West - it was the best selling classical record of the 1990s, the reason is that transcendent and meltingly beautiful movement with the solo soprano. Magic. Hear it here in authentic Polish style. £12; concessions £10

Scots and Poles have been travelling each other’s countries at least since the 15th century – and of course they took their traditional music with them. Bringing his personal slant to all the songs, he presents an eccentric view of the last 1000 years of songwriting that subtly makes the point that songs are good whatever century they are from.
“his mysterious tunings, blunt harmonics and yearning melodies are ceaselessly astonishing, making this as much a journey through Thompson’s virtuosity as through a millennium of song.” The Guardian
Thompson’s astonishing guitar technique sees him juggling simultaneous lead, rhythm, and bass parts on the same six strings. He is joined by Judith Owen (vocals, piano) and Debra Dobkin (percussion, vocals). www.richardthompson-music.com

When Hot Chocolate’s debut single Love is Life hit the Top Ten in 1970 it was the first of a glittering string of over 30 chart hits, giving Britain’s most successful soul band the unique distinction of having hit singles for fifteen consecutive years. Brown’s charismatic image and unique voice was the central focus of the group along with a great songwriting talent that saw him pen such classics as It Started With A Kiss, You Sexy Thing, Emma, No Doubt About It, So You Win Again and Everyone’s A Winner. Errol was awarded an MBE for services to popular music in 2003 followed by an Ivor Novello Award for outstanding contribution to British Music in 2004.

Displaying his trademark humour in the selection of songs, Thompson takes a journey through 1000 Years of Popular Music, from the ballads of the early middle ages, through more modern songs originally made known by artists as varied as Nat King Cole, Nelly Furtado, Gilbert & Sullivan and The Who.

The Hollies Sat 18 Apr: 8pm | Perth Concert Hall According to a certain Guinness Book of British Hit Singles, The Hollies had more hit records than The Beatles, including He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother, The Air that I Breathe and Carrie Anne. Their live performance is Hollies pure and simple - or complex and sophisticated - as the mood takes them. Wistful vocal harmonies or sheer raw musical power - each song is spectacularly showcased by its own brilliant lightshow. Tony Hick’s incisive narrative gives you the inside story on how The Hollies classic recordings were created, occasionally seasoned with the odd morsel of backstage gossip. A Horsecross production
Highly visual, musical and comical, this is Tam O’Shanter like you’ve never heard it or seen it before. From the sleepy hollows of a west coast market town on a nightmare journey into the furthest reaches of Hell, our eponymous hero gets (much) more than he bargained for when he sets off on his night of debauchery. This story about love, morality and regret is told through the experiences of an Oxfordeducated Catholic priest. Father David is assigned to a new parish in a crippled Scottish town on the Ayrshire coast, where sectarianism runs rife. He is a naïve and unworldly man, ill-suited to his new parish. Drifting away from his peers in the town, he is drawn to Mark and Lisa, a troubled teenage couple. Their everyday world of drunken nights and recreational drugs is as exotic and enthralling to him as his cloistered life is to them. As events take a perilous direction, Father David’s infatuation splinters his life into pieces. Starring Ian McDiarmid (Star Wars) as Father David and Blythe Duff (Taggart).
