A year long celebration which marks the 800th anniversary of the granting of the Royal Burgh Charter to Perth by King William the Lion in 1210. 1210 - 2010

Funders + partners

HOME AND AWAY

Throughout 2010 Horsecross Arts presents three community based festivals as part of our contribution towards Perth 800 – the celebration of 800 years of Perth being a Royal Burgh. Our first event is Samaagam in March. School pupils and community participants will create music and dance inspired by Samaagam, a piece of Indian/Western fusion music, before a performance of the original music by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and legendary musician Amjad Ali Khan. In September Perth Concert Hall has its 5th birthday. To celebrate we’re having a Carnival, with a parade in the High Street and a music party in the evening featuring musicians from Brazil, Nigeria and Scotland. The final event is Lightnight in November when night will be turned into day throughout the whole of Perth city centre. We’ll have sparkling light displays in and around the concert hall, a huge artificial moon, plus another of our popular Big Sings. There’ll be more information on Carnival and Lightnight later in the year but in the meantime...

1210 - 2010

Samaagam is a piece of music written by renowned Indian sarod virtuoso Amjad Ali Khan, conductor David Murphy and musicians from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Samaagam, which means 'confluence' or 'coming together' explores the common roots of Indian and Western music and was inspired by the different seasons of the year.

The sarod is deeper in tone than the sitar and more akin to the human voice. Amjad Ali Khan is the master at making it sing; weaving complex, beautiful and emotive soundscapes from its 19 strings, creating an “overall effect which was both exciting and serene” (The Scotsman  on Samaagam)

We’re looking for groups including choirs, dance and drama groups, from all over Perth and Kinross to be part of our spectacular carnival procession on Sat 18 Sep. If your group would like to take part, please contact Jenn (details below).

Calling all brass players

We want to create a huge Scottish-samba fusion band to perform at our Carnival on Sat 18 Sep. If you’re a brass player aged 12-60, live in Perth and Kinross and can take part in Saturday workshops during August 2010 – we need you! Contact Jenn (details below) to reserve your place in the band.

A LIFE IN 8 CHAPTERS The piano sonata lies at the heart of Beethoven’s life’s work: the first was completed in 1795, the last in 1822 – just five years before his death. Through these 32 pieces you can trace his progress from brilliant young man to the unquestioned genius of his age. The sonatas hold some of Beethoven's boldest, most profound and personal music. In Llŷr Williams they find an ideal interpreter: a musician of deep insight, commanding presence and formidable technique. Over the course of 2010 Williams will undertake the complete cycle of Beethoven’s sonatas, beginning at the beginning and continuing (mostly) chronologically through to the last works. £20, £15, £10; concessions £18, £13, £8

“An exhilarating and assured new play, as compelling and accessible as a detective story.” New York Times It is Catherine’s 25th birthday. Her adult life has been devoted to the love and care of her brilliant but unstable father. Following his death, the affections of a young man and the discovery of a mysterious mathematical proof draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: how much of her father’s madness - or genius - will she inherit? A compelling and compassionate mystery, Proof won the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best Play in 2001. It has since become a major film but this delicate study of a fragile life in the balance comes alive onstage. AD
