PERTH YOUTH THEATRE’S 50th ANNIVERSARY

BRIEF HISTORY In 1966 we established Scotland’s first theatre-based youth theatre company – Perth Youth Theatre – a participatory programme for young people aged between 12 and 21. In 2011, Perth Youth Theatre was restructured to include primary-aged children and we currently have over 150 members attending our highly regarded classes on a weekly basis who are aged between 5 and 21. The hallmarks of Perth Youth Theatre are quality, authenticity and diversity, and last year our efforts were recognised when we won the prestigious Perthshire Chamber of Commerce Commitment to the Community Award. Set-up by professional directors Brian Howard and Catherine Robins, Perth Youth Theatre attracted members from across Scotland to attend weekly classes. In the early days of PYT there was no room in Perth Theatre for rehearsals, so participants met for classes at a rehearsal space in York Place, but from the very beginning the group created performances for the theatre’s main stage. Perth Youth Theatre has taken part in a number of national and international projects over the years. To celebrate Perth Youth Theatre’s 25th anniversary in 1991, Perth Theatre’s then Artistic Director Joan Knight, and Associate Director Ken Alexander brought together over 100 young people from 14 countries. They joined members of Perth Youth Theatre to perform nine sell-out performances of Peace Child in Perth City Hall. More recently Perth Youth Theatre has worked in France, Ireland and Australia. In 2012 senior members performed their production of Normal at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. While 2013 and 2014 saw PYT perform at the National Theatre Connections Festivals at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast and Eden Court Theatre, Inverness. Over the last half-century, Perth Youth Theatre has trained and nurtured thousands of young people, many of whom have gone on to work in theatre, television and film – most notably our Perth Theatre Ambassador, Ewan McGregor.

WHAT OUR ALUMNI SAY “I feel like my life changed that first day I walked into Perth Theatre. It was the best thing that happened to me, it set me on my way” Ewan McGregor (Professional Actor, PYT Member during 1980s) “I spent virtually my whole teenage years at the Theatre! I went to the Youth Theatre on a Saturday morning run first by Liz Carruthers then Ken Alexander. There were only two boys, me & Ewan McGregor…it had a huge influence over me” Colin McCredie (Professional Actor, PYT Member during 1980s)) “I made some of my most enduring relationships there and developed a skill for improvising that has served me well... We didn’t know who we would become, but few of us had doubts that we would become something” Rhod Sharp (BBC Radio Five Live presenter, PYT member 1967-71) “being a member of Perth Youth Theatre sparked my interest in young people’s participation in theatre and the arts. Returning as a Trainee Assistant Director ignited this interest into a lifelong passion which has, in turn, allowed me to reinvest this passion into the Scottish Youth Theatre sector. My roots will always remain with PYT and I aim to always be able to replicate the initial spark I felt for every participant I work with” Rachael Esdale (Producer, Lyceum Youth Theatre, PYT Member during 2000s) “it [PYT] was the thing that made me blimmin’ love acting so much and I wouldn’t be where I am today without it!” Ellie Jackson (Professional Actor, PYT Member during 2000s) “PYT pretty much made me the person I am today. Not only did it fuel my passion for the craft of acting, it also helped me develop some confidence within myself, develop relationships with people, opened doors to new opportunities and also created friendships and bonds with people which still exist to this day. It also got me through all the highs and lows in life” Ian Stobbie (Actor, PYT Member during 2000s)
