One of the great vocalists, Jack Jones makes a rare visit to the UK to celebrate half a century in showbusiness accompanied by his world-class 18-piece Big Band. Those five decades have garnered two Grammys, his own TV variety show, countless sellout world tours, regular Las Vegas engagements and 50 recorded albums (including 20 US Top 20 hits) – the latest a tribute to his great friend Tony Bennett. His stylish, elegant approach blends jazz, pop and swing to great effect on classic tracks such as Lollipops And Roses, Wives And Lovers, The Impossible Dream, The Race Is On, Lady, Call Me Irresponsible, What I Did For Love and the Love Boat theme as well as big band covers of more unlikely material like Light My Fire and Every Breath You Take.

Early in 1968, a group of young British musicians gathered together in hunger, destitution and modest optimism in Luton, North of London. Jethro Tull released their first album, This Was, later that year after which Benefit, Aqualung, and Thick as a Brick followed. The band’s success grew internationally and in the 70s they established themselves as one of the world’s top live acts.

HOMEAWAY
Rebellion and rock ‘n’ roll have been strutting hand-in-hand for more than half a century, but only very rarely has their union involved real weapons and a painful struggle for survival. Tinariwen fought a rebellion in the early 1990s to win greater freedom and self-determination for the Touareg people of the southern Sahara. The fight was brief and bloody but it gave birth to a whole new style of desert music, powered by rolling rhythms and electric guitars. Tinariwen are originators, survivors, the Stones and the Clash of the Sahara rolled into one. Their roots/rock rebellion of the soul is one of the most entrancing sounds to emerge from Africa in years.
www.tinariwen.com
Who better to pair Tinariwen with than Scotland’s own folkie renegades Shooglenifty. For more than a decade they have been at the forefront of new Celtic music with a freewheeling blend of traditional tunes, world influences and irresistible rhythms delivered with blistering energy and a great sense of fun.

A National Treasure II A Celebration of the Music of Gordon Duncan Sat 27 Sep: 7.30pm Perth Concert Hall
After last year’s spectacular sellout concert, a glittering cast of traditional musicians from Scotland and beyond come together to pay tribute to a true original. Gordon, from Pitlochry, was widely regarded as one of the most skilled and innovative traditional music performers and composers of modern times. While steeped in the art of traditional Highland piping, his approach to music was always imaginative, fresh and at times radical, to the extent that his influence can be heard within an entire generation of younger musicians across Scotland and well beyond.

Now with more explosive energy, a bigger line-up and a massive new sound, the best Queen tribute around has just got better! Since the mid 70s Magic have built their reputation and following, performing material of great vocal and instrumental complexity to an incredibly high standard.

9 A couple, desperate but unable to start a family, develop an intense relationship with a tree stump carved to look like a baby. Believing it to be real, gradually their obsession brings the lump of wood to life. As the fixation grows, so does the ‘baby’ and its monstrous appetite. Not content with baby food, it eats the family cat and then the postman. Things get stranger when the social worker arrives to see what’s going on… Taken from the wonderfully twisted imagination of cult Czech film-maker Jan Svankmajer, Little Otik combines dark humour, filmsurreal horror and an unnerving but tender family story. Brought to the stage for the first time in a collaboration between renowned theatre company Vanishing Point and the National Theatre of Scotland, Little Otik is a macabre and fantastical story for the 21st century. The cast includes Sandy Grierson, whose last appearance in Perth won him ‘Best Male Performance’ in the 2006-07 Critics’ Award for Theatre in Scotland for Perth Theatre co-production Fergus Lamont. Threshold artspace at Glassrooms Perth Concert Hall New international show with 5 new commissions + 15 favourites from the Horsecross collection. Join us to find out why text – from letters and lyrics to poems and stories – are primary ingredients in artists’ palettes. New commissions include Cantus by artist, poet and publisher Alec Finlay – a 22 channel video installation of an endless circular poem. Born in 1966 in Inverness, Finlay exhibited widely internationally and most recently won Scottish Design Awards’ Best Work of Art in the Public Realm 2007. Talking about his inspiration the artist says:
“It arose from my experience of hearing Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten, lying in bed listening to Radio 3 on a dark and rainy night. The music interfusing with the rain was suggestive of John Cage’s experience of listening to records in his cabin at Stony Point, and hearing the sounds of the surrounding woodland come in his open window, mixing in with the music.” Free

Repeat Offender Sat 21 Jun: 8pm Perth Concert Hall
Jimmy Carr is one of the biggest faces in comedy. Literally — he’s got one of the biggest faces.
Not suitable for the easily offended. In fact not even a show for people that are quite difficult to offend. Essentially this is a show for people without a moral compass. Book early to avoid disappointment (or alternatively lower your expectations).
Danny’s engaging persona, razor sharp mind, and stunning off-the-cuff material have made him one of the most sought after performers on the circuit. His debut show at the Edinburgh Festival in 2001 was a total sellout, a trend he has continued ever since in bigger and bigger venues. £14; concessions £12; suitable for 12+
“He had the crowd on side from the beginning and never let go. No surprise he got a standing ovation.”
