SUMMER PERTH celebrations

Summer 2015 sees the culmination of our second Perth Piano Sundays season. Martin Roscoe makes a Perth debut with Schubert’s last and greatest piano sonata and the series concludes in June with a beautifully constructed programme by Perth’s own Alasdair Beatson whose career goes from strength to strength. In May the Maxwell String Quartet complete their survey of Schubert’s last three string quartets. We can also anticipate an exciting Autumn with a performance of Wagner’s Die Walkűre, and a unique chamber music weekend devised for Perth by Nicola Benedetti. Finally we look forward to welcoming Alison Balsom back to Perth Concert Hall in September to celebrate our 10th Anniversary as one of the UK’s most vibrant concert and cultural venues. James Waters Creative Director, Classical Music

Jemima Levick directs Jo Clifford’s remarkable adaptation which transforms Charles Dickens’ most popular work into an outstanding piece of modern theatre. With £5 tickets for under 26s, this is a great opportunity for young people who may be studying the novel to see it brought to spectacular life on stage. A spectacle of a different sort is on offer in outrageous girls-night-out comedy 52 Shades of Maggie and Downton fans will love brilliant parody The Only Way is Downton brought to you by Perth Festival of the Arts. The Windy City blows into the Fair City in July as Jodie Prenger stars in hit musical Calamity Jane; currently picking up great reviews as it tours throughout the country. Take the air with a 20-minute walk before Magnetic North’s award-winning A Walk at the Edge of the World in May then reflect on the state of mind walking creates in this immersive and inspiring show. And for all you Janis Joplin fans, we have the award-winning Angela Darcy, currently wooing audiences with her portrayal of the late singer in Full Tilt. Anna Beedham, Programme Co-ordinator

Perth Concert Hall

Break their hearts my pride and joy; Break their hearts and have no mercy… As Pip journeys from boy to man he pursues that which is eternally out of reach. He yearns for a family and a place to belong to, he longs to be a gentleman, and he strives to do what is right. But above all else, he craves the love of one woman. Entangled in Miss Havisham’s tragic web of self-pity and pitiless desire for revenge, Estella is raised to be admired, to be gawped, smelt and pawed at. Her emotions are frozen; she is trained to hurt, only to be hurt in return. Jo Clifford’s remarkable adaptation uses Dickens’ own words from this devastating and darkly beautiful novel, to create a classic piece of modern British theatre. Cultures clash and eras hilariously collide in this brilliant parody from impressionist Luke Kempner. The star of YouTube hit Downstairs At Downton, Luke has created an original story in which the characters of Downton Abbey are in crisis and have to call upon modern celebrities to help them save the estate from financial ruin - again! ‘Kempner’s script is consistently funny... his Downton impersonations are a deconstructive delight’ Metro PRE-SHOW

From multi-award winning writing/directing team Peter Arnott and director Cora Bissett, Full Tilt was a sensation at last year’s Fringe, winning Best Play from the Scottish Arts Club and Best Female Musical Performance for its star, Angela Darcy. On stage a woman stands, the greatest rock singer of her generation. Standing around her is the hottest band that a record company can buy. In front of her, an audience of thousands of expectant fans. She is Janis Joplin. She is utterly alone. A celebration of a sound, a scream of protest at the universe. Full Tilt Boogie. ‘So brilliant and intense musically and dramatically it lifts the hairs on the back of the neck’ «««««The Scotsman
