Welcome to Schubertiad
“A deservedly popular festival, as adventurous as it is enthralling The Herald
All of us at Horsecross Arts hope you will enjoy the weekend which has become something of an annual pilgrimage and has done much to establish the reputation of Perth Concert Hall as a major international classical music venue. Song is at the core of this weekend’s programme with several Horsecross debuts. Adrian Eröd is a distinguished member of the Vienna State Opera and Stefanie Irányi is a really exciting young mezzo. Both are accompanied by one of the world’s truly great accompanists in Helmut Deutsch. James Gilchrist’s Schubert singing has received high critical praise and Steven Osborne makes a welcome return to perform Schubert’s final piano sonata on the instrument which Steven himself chose for the hall. Schubertiad 2010 closes with a performance of the great B flat trio by three brilliant young musicians led by Perth’s own Alasdair Beatson fresh from his highly successful residency earlier this year. The weekend also includes the opportunity to hear some major performers from the past. We have been lucky enough to be given access to recordings from Lord Harewood’s private collection which enable us to present performances by Sviatoslav Richter with Benjamin Britten, Julius Patzak, Fritz Wunderlich and the Amadeus Quartet with William Pleeth. Treasurable indeed. We are delighted that this year’s Schubertiad is being presented in association with BBC Radio 3 with selected concerts being recorded for future broadcast. Of course the real star of the weekend is Schubert himself. To spend an entire weekend in his company is a true privilege and we hope that you get as much pleasure from listening to these performances as we have had planning them.

Winterreise Schubert: Winterreise Adrian Eröd, baritone Helmut Deutsch, piano For many listeners Winterreise remains the greatest of all song cycles. The singer’s long journey to emotional oblivion has almost unbearable pathos. Adrian Eröd sings Figaro in Vienna and Beckmesser in Bayreuth. His partnership with Helmut Deutsch, one of the world’s finest accompanists, is one to treasure. Gannochy Auditorium

9 October Steven Osborne Schubert: Piano Sonata in B flat D960 One of the leading pianists of today Steven Osborne returns to Perth Concert Hall to play Schubert’s unforgettable last sonata. Listen Again: Great tenors
Julius Patzak (1953) and Fritz Wunderlich (1966) Julius Patzak (1898-1974) was a distinguished Austrian tenor who excelled in the roles of Tamino and Florestan. He is perhaps best known for his recording of Mahler’s das Lied von der Erde with Bruno Walter and Kathleen Ferrier. Today’s recording of songs from Schwanengesang was recorded in 1953. Fritz Wunderlich (1930-1966) is universally recognised as having been one of the greatest singers of all time. This group of songs was performed at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1966 just weeks before his tragically early death at the age of 35. Norie-Miller Studio

Die schöne Müllerin Schubert: Die schöne Müllerin James Gilchrist, tenor
|
Anna Tilbrook, piano
Schubert’s first song cycle, while lacking the relentless darkness of Winterreise, is still highly emotionally charged. James Gilchrist has garnered critical acclaim for his recording of die schöne Müllerin and is a Lieder singer of rare skill. Recorded by BBC Radio 3 for future broadcast.

Schubert: String Quintet in C Performances of the great Schubert Quintet by this combination of artists were almost legendary for their sublime musicianship. This performance was recorded in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London in 1968.

Doric String Quartet Schubert: String trio in B flat D471 Schubert: Quartet in A minor ‘Rosamunde’ Schubert’s last three quartets are all masterpieces. The ‘Rosamunde’ Quartet has a distinctly melancholy air with a wide emotional range from the uneasy opening movement, through the charming set of variations and the nervy, unstable scherzo to the poised but still cautious finale. Recorded by BBC Radio 3 for future broadcast.

10 October Music for Wind Ensemble
Schubert: Wind Octet Schubert: Harmoniemusik from Alfonso and Estrella Illuminati Wind Ensemble Music for wind ensemble or ‘Harmoniemusik’ was very popular in the 18th and 19th centuries with many popular melodies from operas being transcribed for wind groups for use in outdoor performance or on social occasions. Schubert’s music for wind ensemble is rarely performed. This afternoon will rectify that with renderings of the charming octet and arrangements of the hit numbers from his opera Alfonso and Estrella.

Alasdair Beatson and Friends Schubert: Trio Notturno Schubert: Impromptus D935 Schubert: Piano Trio in B flat Tom Gould, violin Philip Higham, cello Alasdair Beatson, piano Schubert’s great B flat Piano Trio is one of the high points of all chamber music. Here it is set in context by the earlier but no less beautiful Trio Notturno and the programme is completed by performances of the wonderful D935 impromptus. Recorded by BBC Radio 3 for future broadcast.

“The moment is supreme.”
Franz Schubert
Schubertiad 2011 – 7-9 October Schubertiad 2011 will be the 5th year that Horsecross Arts has celebrated the great composer Franz Schubert. We hope that you will join us in supporting these celebrations. Schubert had a close circle of friends and associates who admired his work however wide appreciation of his music during his lifetime was limited at best. He was never able to secure adequate employment, relying for most of his career on the support of friends and family. Like Schubert, we rely on the support of many people and organisations to make these Schubertiads possible. By becoming a Patron you’re directly helping with the development of Schubertiad and to thank you for your generous contributions we offer many great benefits including priority booking, invitation to a champagne reception during the festival and, for our Circle Members, there’s even the opportunity to dine with the Schubertiad artists! We hope you will play your part and help us to make Horsecross’s 5th Schubertiad the finest yet. Best wishes Louisa Jacobs, Business Development Manager 01738 477721 | ljacobs@horsecross.co.uk The support from our Schubertiad Circle Members and Patrons is greatly appreciated and we would like to thank the following people for their generous and continued support, without which we would not be able to secure the future of this festival.
