We’re thrilled this internationally renowned pianist is returning to Perth for another Scottish exclusive, playing Beethoven’s last three piano sonatas.

Beethoven was deaf by the time he wrote them, so they are very much music he heard in his mind and through the vibrations under his fingers only. These are visionary, soul searching, ‘blow you out of the water’ kind of works. Young Georgian pianist, Khatia Buniatishvili swept the audience away with her all-Chopin UK debut here in May. It was so special that she’s been asked back immediately and returns with a full-blooded programme including works by Schumann.

Rachmaninov's Fourth Piano Concerto packs a punch with its rampant virtuosity and passion and will be played by seven times Grammy-nominated Leif Ove Andsnes. Stravinsky's dazzling Firebird drives home to an intoxicating, powerful finish.

This is the SCO grown as big as it gets but without sacrificing that close-up energy and attention to the subtleties that makes it so special. Beethoven's luminous Violin Concerto is performed by the brilliant young Armenian, Sergey Khachatryan.
The legendary Maestro Neeme Järvi conducts two tragic tales of doomed love. Follow the plaintive cor anglais solo of Mélisande as it weaves through Sibelius' haunting and melancholic textures. Then Henk de Vlieger's eagerly anticipated Tristan and Isolde: An Orchestral Passion, an incredible opera compressed to the length of a symphony without losing any of its sumptuously emotional impact.

A wonderful evening to open the series from the opulent richness that Ravel conjures up in the magical Daphnis and Chloé to a long-established BBC SSO party piece, The Confession of Isobel Gowdie: one of the worlds most often played modern British compositions.
Expect familiar favourites with polkas and waltzes aplenty - it just would not be New Year without The Blue Danube - as well as delightful musical excerpts from The Nutcracker and The Merry Wives of Windsor. And glamorous Swedish soprano Hannah Holgersson joins the orchestra for an enchanting selection of songs. A great way to welcome in 2010.
