Violin Concerto No.1 Symphony No.6 Symphony No.7
Donald Runnicles, conductor Janine Jansen, violin
Kristjan Järvi, conductor Mikhail Simonyan, violin
Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony was conceived on a truly ‘heroic’ scale and the music endures as a universal homage to the noblest aspirations of man. Donald Runnicles opens the evening with music from Prometheus – a work in praise of the mythical Greek creator of mankind.
Sibelius’s majestic final symphony is paired with its rarer predecessor, the lyrical, elusive Sixth. Expect insights aplenty, genuine magic plus a generous dose of real emotional power, as Mikhail Simonyan performs one of the most devastating of all 20th century violin concertos, Shostakovich’s First. Pre-concert talk 6.45pm with Katherine Wren (RSNO Viola).

Haydn Symphony No.94 ‘Surprise’ Szymanowski Violin Concerto No.2 Stravinsky Orpheus Robin Ticciati, conductor Renaud Capuçon, violin
SCO Principal Conductor Robin Ticciati makes his Perth debut with the first of two concerts in this Perth Concert Series. Beethoven’s Fourth sings with all the ardour and lyricism of the first Romantics, and Ravel’s brilliance contrasts beautifully with the elegiac simplicity of Takemitsu’s miniature masterpiece.
The story of Haydn lulling an unsuspecting audience to sleep with his gentle slow movement then jolting them awake with a loud ‘SURPRISE’ chord is probably too good to be true, but that doesn’t diminish the piece’s charms. In Orpheus Stravinsky retells the Greek myth of the hero’s journey to the Underworld, and brilliant French violinist Renaud Capuçon performs Szymanowski’s sumptuous Concerto.

The year is 1786. George III is King. King of England. He has a loving wife, a nation of subjects, a loyal parliament, and the world kneels at his feet... But he’s a little odd. From the hand of national treasure Alan Bennett (The History Boys, Talking Heads), The Madness of George III is an epic play about the ties that bind us together as family, as a society and as a nation. Gripping drama, dangerous politics and irreverent comedy collide in a rollercoaster ride where the health of the nation is at the mercy of the mental health of one man. Starring Simon Ward (Zulu Dawn, Young Churchill, All Creatures Great And Small) and Susan Penhaligon (The Land That Time Forgot, No Sex Please We’re British, Bouquet of Barbed Wire). Wintervention
Tue 7 Dec: 8pm
|
Norie-Miller Studio, Perth Concert Hall
From the skiers who sail from Argentina to Antarctica in search of their next turns to the confessions of one skier for whom six season passes simply aren’t enough. Then there are the skiers and riders who venture far from the beaten track - deep into the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia or the northern reaches of the Arctic Circle - just because few others have. Wintervention is more than just a film, it’s a celebration of winter. £8; no concessions (unreserved seating)
