Created by Music Fellow Matthew Rooke A concert performance of a fascinating work in development. Taking its name from an exuberant form of renaissance Scottish poetry Flyting explores Scotland’s relationship with Africa. Starting at the fabulous court of James IV, music and song put new flesh on the bones of history, across the centuries and right up to the present day.

Bringing together classical strings, operatic and traditional voices to blend African, Scottish and contemporary music forms, Flyting asks the question “wha’s like us?” and finds some perhaps unexpected answers. Sung by

Guitarists Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor joined his band in a remarkable succession in the mid-60s, honing their chops with Mayall before going on to join Cream, Fleetwood Mac and the Rolling Stones, respectively. John McVie and Mick Fleetwood, Jack Bruce, Aynsley Dunbar, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Andy Fraser (of Free), John Almond and Jon Mark also played and recorded with Mayall for varying lengths of times in the 60s.

Transforming Perth Theatre Perth Theatre has been at the heart of social and artistic life in Perth for more than 100 years. Horsecross Arts has plans in place to ensure that it will continue to be enjoyed by everyone living in Perth and Kinross and our visitors for many years to come.
“If the interior was beautiful by day, it was absolutely gorgeous by night... a theatrical gem of its kind
This image, from our design partners Richard Murphy Architects, shows one of the new facades for the planned theatre redevelopment, but the real changes will all be happening inside... A full conservation of our B listed auditorium including restoring the upper circle and orchestra pit and improving seating, ventilation and comfort. A new, modern extension that will provide three new creative learning spaces for Horsecross Arts' education and community activities and a new home for Perth Youth Theatre.
A complete redesign of foyer spaces to allow ease of access and circulation for all, with new street level entrances including onto Mill Street. A brand new 225 capacity performance space designed for more intimate, small scale music and drama, as well as work for young people and families and low cost community hire. The Absence of Women Perth Theatre
Gerry and Iggy, two labourers from Belfast. face the end of their lives in a London hostel talking of the present and thinking of the past. They argue about who has the biggest liver, the names of tube stations and whether they should go back to Belfast or not. But where are the women in their lives?
McCafferty has been described as the first truly great playwright of Northern Ireland, going beyond clichéd political writing to document the lives in his native town. “a perfectly formed mini–masterpiece” Culture NI

Doorways in Drumorty by Mike Gibb Wed 14 Sep: 7.45pm Perth Theatre
Set in the North East of Scotland, Doorways in Drumorty is inspired by and based on the writings of Lorna Moon, the lass from Strichen who became the highest paid Hollywood screenwriter of her era.

Red Rag Theatre presents
During the later part of her life Lorna wrote a series of short stories, subsequently published as “Doorways In Drumorty”, which caused controversy in her native Aberdeenshire with many of the locals recognising themselves amongst the thinly disguised characters. The play interweaves several of these stories, both amusing and poignant, into a work that is warm, charming and humorous and that captures the mood of the rural North East in the 1920’s, an era when the chief currency was gossip! £14.50, £10.50; concessions £12.50 (includes booking fee)

Love is in the air and everything is at sea in Shakespeare’s romantic comedy of confusion and excess. Shipwrecked Viola, believing her twin brother drowned and her fortunes lost, disguises herself as a man to make her way on this strange shore. She soon enters the service of the lovestruck Count Orsino and is dispatched to win the heart of the beautiful Olivia for her new master. Before long the land where she has washed up is proving no less tempestuous than the sea she escaped as she unwittingly begins a tangle of confused desires and mistaken identity. Swept along on waves of passion and grief, virtue, lust, ambition and grace, some of Shakespeare’s most memorable characters are caught up in a breath-taking tale that seizes the imagination and stays with you forever. “arguably the greatest comedy ever written” Michael Billington, The Guardian

In 1962, in the heart of the South Yorkshire coalfields, the Edlington Colliery’s six-man Glee Club choir group are preparing for their Gala performance. But Philip, the Musical Director, has got a problem. Bant’s wife has run off with the tea delivery man. Scobie can’t get a word in edgeways at home; Colin wants to be a rock star; and Jack has romantic ideas above his station. With the Gala only weeks away, music seems to be the last thing on anyone’s mind, and that’s before a revelation that will change everything…

Men Should Weep Horsecross Arts presents a National Theatre of Scotland production
7.45pm, Sat matinees 2.30pm
By turns laugh out loud funny, at times tragic, but always thought provoking, Men Should Weep was remarkably ahead of its time when written in 1947. This major new production by the National Theatre of Scotland will introduce this much–loved work to a new generation of theatregoers and remind those who have seen it before why it has become a contemporary Scottish classic.
www.horsecross.co.uk
Set amid the grinding poverty of Glasgow's tenements in the 1930s, Men Should Weep has long been a favourite with audiences. Following the misfortunes of the Morrison family, Ena Lamont Stewart’s landmark play is a searing depiction of the hand to mouth poverty that working class people lived in at that time. At the centre of the story is Maggie, the care-worn matriarch. Supported and hindered in equal measure by a network of neighbours and family – from whom it is impossible to keep any secrets – she does her very best in the worst of circumstances, always putting herself last.
“Ena Lamont Stewart's remarkable play... a landmark in British drama.” Michael Billington, The Guardian AD BSL CAP
