Donald Runnicles, conductor Denis Kozhukhin, piano Shostakovich's ninth symphony wasn't the victory march the Soviet authorities were expecting, any more than Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem was what its Imperial Japanese commissioners had ordered. Following her sell-out success as Edith Piaf in Toujours l’Amour, Lesley Mackie is joined by a cast of musicians and actors to bring another legendary voice to the Perth Theatre stage. Back in the 1930's and 40's, a cinema-goers passport to fantasy was simply the price of a ticket, but for the people who provided these fantasies, there was no escape. Never-Never Land was their home, and dreams were their reality. At the tender age of thirteen, Judy Garland was admitted to this make-believe world and almost immediately fell victim to its fairy-tale values. This is her story. Meet Olive Madison. She is a slob, and that’s the way she likes it. Her apartment carries a health warning, she serves snacks from the Jurassic era and even her wedding dress had Coca-Cola stains on it. Punctual, hypochondriac neat-freak Florence Unger, however, leaves no drink uncoastered. She can spot a grease stain at fifty blocks, can’t serve nuts without arranging them in ranks and she wears her seatbelt at drive-in movies. Together, they make a distinctly odd couple... but what Olive and Florence do share is a lousy taste in men. So when Florence breaks up with her husband and has to move into Olive’s confined New York apartment, tempers fray. When they take tentative steps onto the dating scene together, things start to get messy – really messy. Female friendships step into the spotlight as Neil Simon’s smash hit comedy of opposites is up-dated, up-gendered and remains uproariously funny. Horsecross Arts presents an Aberdeen Performing Arts production

01738 621031 www.horsecross.co.uk

Tue 30 Oct – Sat 10 Nov: 7.30pm, Sat mat 2.30pm | Perth Theatre The acclaimed creative team that brought Perth the hugely popular Sunset Song and The Silver Darlings presents the third in a trilogy of Scottish literary classics: The Cone Gatherers – a haunting story of good versus evil, and the destructive power of envy and prejudice. This classic Scottish novel tells the tale of two brothers gathering cones in a forest on a Scottish estate in order to replenish the trees felled for the war effort. Neil and his hunchbacked brother, Calum, lead happy

and contented lives in these beautiful surroundings, completely detached from the destruction of the Second World War. However, their innocence and happiness is threatened by the dark, obsessive hatred of Duror the gamekeeper and the deep prejudices of the class system of the time. The obsessions of Duror grow stronger, building to a devastating climax. Robin Jenkins’ greatest novel is brought to life in this brand new adaptation by Scottish dramatist Peter Arnott.

Tue 6 Nov Ian Mitchell's new book, Encounters in the American Mountain West; A Sinner Amongst the Latter Day Saints, tells of his many visits to Rocky Mountain region. This illustrated lecture features his most recent trip along Highway 89 from the Mexican to the Canadian borders, through Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana, in search of Cowboys and Indians, Pre-Columbian civilizations, Mormons and Mineworkers. Ian's journey took him through some of the USA's most staggering National Parks including Zion, Yellowstone and Glacier, and also ventured into the backwoods of mountain America where a tourist is hardly seen. A portrait of Mountain America at a time of crisis and change in US society.

John Beatty Wild Vision

Widely acclaimed as one of the most exciting nature, travel and adventure photographers to have emerged in recent years, John’s work aims to capture “the timeless rhythms of the natural world, its beauty and simplicity, and man’s place within it.”

His audio-visual presentations infuse his audiences with energy and wonder at the beauty of our planet. Images and footage from the ferocious volcanic eruptions in Iceland, the Great Migrations of the Serengeti and the beauty of his native Peak District all make up this fascinating talk. £8.50 (includes booking fee); free for under 18s/students/RSGS members
