‘brilliantly fresh, unexpected and exhilarating... an enlightening and enthralling musical experience’ The Herald on Maxwell String Quartet

CLASSICAL DELIGHTS

We have a particularly exciting autumn of classical music coming up. It includes a fully staged performance of Monteverdi’s ravishing opera The Coronation of Poppea by Ryedale Festival Opera, a visit by the Gramophone award-winning vocal ensemble Vox Luminis and in November we present one of the most famous classical names of the last 30 years - brilliant Korean violinist Kyung-Wha Chung. Following on the success of our first season, we have extended Perth Piano Sundays and the series opens in October with a visit by the peerless Steven Kovacevich. In December, the Dunedin Consort bring their unforgettable interpretation of Handel’s Messiah. Add to this the fantastic series of artists presented by Scotland’s great orchestras as part of the Perth Concert Series, our ever-popular Lunchtime Concerts series and visits by the Scottish Ensemble and it can be seen that Perth is the place to be for great classical music. Comedy is a very serious business. Beethoven knew that when his exuberant Second Symphony cheerfully cast out the classical rulebook, and John Adams certainly knew it when he transformed Beethoven’s late string quartets into Absolute Jest, a one-off concerto that takes Beethoven seriously enough to laugh along with him. Young Swiss-Italian pianist Francesco Piemontesi, noted for his fresh poetic performances, is the soloist in the most lyrical of Beethoven’s piano concertos. The RSNO’s charismatic Principal Guest Conductor, Thomas Søndergård, won’t stint on the emotion. The text of Carmina Burana is a selection of secular poems held in a manuscript at the Bavarian monastery of Benediktbeuren. The big surprise is that apart from some poems which seem morally uplifting, the majority are bawdy songs celebrating temporal delights like drinking, gambling, dancing and love-making - not usually recognised as monk-like behaviour! The work is in three sections - Springtime, In the Tavern and The Court of Love, preceded by and ending with the hymn to the goddess Fortuna. A good story? GOOD THINGS COME IN THREES We play host to three hugely exciting audio-visual experiences over the autumn. On Saturday 6 September, The King Of Ghosts features the Scottish Chamber Orchestra performing a new score by Indian star Soumik Datta to the 1969 Bollywood fantasy comedy Gupi Gayen, Baghi Bayen. Perthshire’s own Pumajaw then bring an update of their Fringe smash Song Noir to the Norie-Miller Studio on Saturday 4 October, blending songs from cult movies with original material and unique visuals. And at the end of the month, the brilliant guitarist Graeme Stephen returns with his quartet for his latest live silent movie score, F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu (1922). See our film section on page 46 for more details on this fantastic blend of musical virtuosity and, for my money, the most genuinely frightening of all vampire movies. To help welcome the Ryder Cup to Perthshire at the end of September, we present a great weekend of live music for locals and visitors alike with The Red Hot Chilli Pipers, The Springsteen Sessions and Big Country headlining, all supported by some great local artists. Elsewhere in a packed programme, our comedy line-up brings three very different acts to the Concert Hall stage: Ross Noble, Jim Davidson and the sold-out Billy Connolly. Andy Shearer,

A once in a lifetime opportunity!

Perth Theatre and Perth Concert Hall are in the midst of a very exciting time!

With work poised to start on the restoration and redevelopment of our much-loved 114 year-old theatre and her very much younger sister Perth Concert Hall turning 10 in 2015, we have double the reason to celebrate! Over the past ten years more local audiences than ever have been entertained and inspired by drama and dance, listened to extraordinary music from Scotland and around the world, or taken part in inspirational community projects and workshops. Our venues will be at the heart of cultural life in Perth for many generations. Wed 5 - Sat 8 Nov: 7.30pm | The Salutation Hotel

Clementina (‘call me Tina’) Baxter is going to swim the Channel in two days time. In the past year she has swum hundreds of miles, won the Tay River Race, and - most importantly - raised £2542.87 in sponsorship. The Courier has already named her a ‘local hero’. Not bad for an average height, average build, mildly asthmatic Perthshire girl. But tonight her mother, the Helen Baxter (entertainer, national treasure), is back in town to host a fundraiser for Clementina (‘Your name’s not Tina’) at the Salutation Hotel, which will blow her running total out of the water. This was meant to be Tina’s moment, but with Helen threatening to steal her thunder, yet again, and calling her Clementina (‘Who is Clementina?’), will the promise of a bigger pot of money compensate? Don’t miss your chance to catch Perth’s favourite showbiz personality, and her daughter (whatever she’s called...) appearing together, for the first and last time, in the charity auction/raffle/showdown of the year. And please give generously. It’s all for a good cause, after all. Isn’t it? £12; concessions £10 (includes booking fee); under 26s £5

However, we aren’t ignoring our wonderful home of Perth Concert Hall. We are absolutely delighted to be working with RSNO to launch a monthly community orchestra for adults. The group will be informal and will enable adults who haven’t played for a while to get back into orchestral playing gradually. If you prefer playing traditional tunes our Trad from Scratch sessions are back for the autumn too! In October we take part in Luminate: Scotland’s creative ageing festival with Old is the New Young in our Threshold Artspace (see page 49) plus a creative ageing day which will include playwriting, drama and music workshops for adults over sixty. We are not forgetting young people this autumn with our Little Stars Act and Dance classes taking place at the PAS Activity space and North Inch Community Campus respectively. For older young people our weekly classes continue - our Join In Brochure is now available from Perth Concert Hall. Sun 26 Oct: 3pm This splendid tale of forbidden love, self-sacrifice, jealousy and suffering returns to the Bolshoi stage after a ten-year absence. The Legend of Love is one of Russian master Yuri Grigorovich’s earliest choreographic works, and its storyline explores the conflict between love and duty through its two heroines, featuring dance movements, sets and costumes inspired by the Middle East.

LIVE FILM ON SOCIETY+ SCREEN+

The Legend of Love (live)

The Pharaoh’s Daughter (recorded encore)

Sun 23 Nov: 3pm The plot of this lavish production is loosely based on Théophile Gauthier’s novel Le Roman de la Momie. French choreographer Pierre Lacotte was exclusively commissioned in 2000 by the Bolshoi Theatre to resurrect Marius Petipa’s mighty Egyptian fresco, and he succeeded brilliantly in giving new life to this forgotten masterpiece. With its exotic setting, this grand 19th-century fantasy is one of the most remarkable productions in the Bolshoi’s repertoire.

La Bayadère (recorded encore)

Sun 7 Dec: 3pm The story of impossible love between is set against the backdrop of a lush, mysterious India. Marius Petipa’s choreography, here in a new scenic version by Yuri Grigorovich, is exquisite; the scene known as The Kingdom of the Shades is one of the most celebrated in the history of ballet.

The Nutcracker (live) Sun 21 Dec: 3pm On Christmas Eve, Marie’s godfather gives her a wooden nutcracker carved in the shape of a little man. At midnight, when the celebrations are over, all the toys magically come to life. With iconic music by Tchaikovsky and masterfully interpreted by the Bolshoi dancers, it will enchant the whole family for the festive season, proving that one is never too young or too old to be swept away by The Nutcracker.
