WELCOME

A very warm welcome to our tenth, specially expanded edition of Southern Fried. As always, the song is at the very heart of this year’s festival as we welcome some truly world-class songwriters in Nick Lowe, Loudon Wainwright III and Beth Nielsen Chapman, celebrate the work of one of the greatest ever - Mr Chuck Berry - and Canada’s great pioneers of song: Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and The Band. We know discovering new artists is one of the great joys of Southern Fried for many of you and this year is no exception as we introduce you to Sam Outlaw, Angaleena Presley, Rick Redbeard, Sean Taylor, Peter Bruntnell, Rab Noakes and Jim Lauderdale and a host of emerging talents on our free Outdoor and Acoustic Stages. We also present four acts from our first partnership with the Americana Music Association UK; Danni Nicholls, Steve Grozier, The Black Feathers and GD Sweeney & The Undercover Cowboys. For this special year, we also wanted to invite back some old friends and we look forward to hearing Doug Seegers, Ags Connolly, Rachel Harrington, Amythst Kiah and Cyndi Cain once again. And whether this is your first or your tenth Southern Fried, we can’t wait to see you in Perth at the end of July for a feast of fine music, friendship and our famous soul food!

We couldn’t let our tenth anniversary happen without one of our famed multi-artist celebrations of an American music icon. Following concerts dedicated to Hank, Elvis, Johnny and Dolly in previous years, in 2017 we pay tribute to another giant figure in the history of roots and popular music, Chuck Berry. A prime architect of rock’n’roll, a massively influential singer-songwriter who was covered by and inspired both The Beatles and The Stones and countless others and an artist who consciously fused rhythm and blues and country into his unique sound, it’s hard to understate the importance of Chuck Berry in shaping so much of the music we hear today. We’re absolutely delighted that a great friend and fan of Southern Fried, legendary guitarist Andy Fairweather Low has agreed to anchor the show with his expanded 8-piece soul revue, The Hi Riders. A fantastic lineup of singers will complement this amazing band and this diverse collection of festival artists and special guests will explore Chuck Berry’s songbook across many musical styles including his greatest hits with a few surprises along the way.

These five incredible young musicians honed their skills in 350 live performances over nearly five years charming and wowing audiences along the way. www.flatsandsharps.co.uk

ANGALEENA PRESLEY If Cat on a Hot Tin Roof/Butterfield 8-era Elizabeth Taylor and David Lynch had a baby, and Wanda Jackson was her babysitter, the result would be Angaleena Presley. Strong as jalapeño juice, capable of standing down a twister and a drunk redneck on a tilt, she maintains a reverence for songs, unvarnished truth, be who you are dignity and a brazen sense of “oh, yeah.” www.angaleenapresley.com

London based G D Sweeney has combined his love of bluegrass, folk melodies and classic country sounds with his Irish roots. His new-traditional style is the backdrop to the intriguing narratives and characters in his songs, often delivered with a wry comic twist. www.gdsweeney.com

JON MACKENZIE

Jon Mackenzie is a singer and guitarist from Perth who makes his hometown debut as a solo artist tonight. Jon describes his sound as “Cosmic Country Music” and it combines psychedelic and folk elements along with finger-style guitar, trippy pedal steel, upright bass and beautiful west coast harmonies. www.jonmackenzie.scot

NICK LOWE Last year’s electric closing show from Nick Lowe, Paul Carrack and Andy Fairweather Low was one of the most memorable nights in Southern Fried history. The only vaguely negative feedback we received was that there maybe weren’t quite enough Nick Lowe songs in it as some people would have liked. We’ve remedied that at the earliest opportunity and are very excited that Nick will return to Perth for this solo concert. Somewhere in London a musician carries the keys to the musical kingdom. In his Technicolor sonic scope are all kinds of sounds, from rock to country to soul to pop. Nothing is off limits, as long as it has a groove and goodness based in reality. The musician has been performing for 40 years, but is as fresh today as the first time he stepped on stage. There are no tricks or short cuts here. Far from it. His songs are as solid as the earth, yet carry no lingering hype or heaviness. The musician is Nick Lowe, the headmaster of British rock. www.nicklowe.com

JIM LAUDERDALE Jim Lauderdale is both a ‘songwriter’s songwriter’, who’s written/co-written many modern classics for iconic artists, as well as an intuitive sideman, who’s enhanced the music of a bevy of esteemed musicians. As a solo artist, he’s created a body of work spanning 28 albums of imaginative roots music, encompassing country, bluegrass, soul, R&B and rock, as well as helping pave the way for the current Americana movement. Jim has written songs and worked with some of the finest artists in traditional and modern music, including Robert Hunter, Ralph Stanley, Elvis Costello, George Strait, Buddy Miller, Lucinda Williams, John Oates, Solomon Burke, Lee Ann Womack, Old Crow Medicine Show, Mary Chapin Carpenter and The Dixie Chicks among many, many others. www.jimlauderdale.com

SEAN TAYLOR

DOUG SEEGERS: 10.45PM One of our themes this year is bringing back some favourite artists who’ve played previous festivals and made a big impression. Doug Seegers certainly falls into that category, having blown people away on his debut appearance two years ago. Seegers found acclaim when Swedish music star Jill Johnson discovered him in a Nashville food pantry and recorded a duet that hit number one in Sweden. His debut album Going Down To The River followed suit and is raw and emotionally charged with strong echoes of Hank Williams, Townes Van Zandt and Gram Parsons. www.dougseegers.com

SAM OUTLAW: 12.15AM LA artist Sam Outlaw’s debut album Angeleno was hugely acclaimed and marked him out as an artist to watch. His forthcoming record, Tenderheart looks set to confirm his arrival as a major act on the Americana scene. Sonically, the album further elaborates Outlaw’s ‘SoCal Country’ sound: a sun-bleached, Baja-influenced twang that deftly points to country’s neo-traditionalists and LA’s legendary singer-songwriters. www.samoutlaw.com

DOUG SEEGERS While growing up in Setauket, New York, Seegers was drawn to the music his parents loved and sang: hard country music from Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Faron Young, Webb Pierce and many more. These influences are writ large in his own songwriting and in his intense, world-weary voice that has often drawn comparison to Williams. In this very special show, he will pay full tribute to the most influential country songwriter of all time singing his favourite Hank songs in his own inimitable style. ‘his voice...a weathered instrument that sounds as robust as it does lived-in.... haunting’ Wall Street Journal

AGS CONNOLLY Ags Connolly is a traditional country singer-songwriter from West Oxfordshire in the UK. A Southern Fried favourite, he proved his astounding debut record How About Now was no fluke with the release earlier this year of Nothin’ Expected – also produced by Dean Owens and featuring a Scottish core band to a fantastic reception. ‘dare I suggest that Ags Connolly might be the best singer-songwriter in the country field that this country has ever turned out? Yes, I think I do, and I think he is…and this is a fabulous record’ Country Music People www.agsconnolly.com

BETH NIELSEN CHAPMAN

Born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1946, Loudon Wainwright III came to fame when Dead Skunk became a Top 20 hit in 1972. One of the most distinctive American songwriters there is, he masterfully combines hilarity and heartbreak in his work, often in the same verse. His songs have since been recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, his son Rufus Wainwright, and Mose Allison, among others.

Renowned for her pure, powerful songs and clear voice, twice Grammy-nominated Beth Nielsen Chapman is one of the pre-eminent singer-songwriters of her generation and one of Nashville’s very finest. Echoing her own eclecticism, she has written songs for artists whose styles span country, pop, folk, blues and jazz, such as Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, Trisha Yearwood, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Bette Midler, Elton John, Michael McDonald and Olivia Newton-John including the Grammy-nominated, smash for Faith Hill, This Kiss.

CHUCK PROPHET & THE MISSION EXPRESS: 12.15AM

Among Beth’s own recordings, the groundbreaking Sand & Water, was performed by Elton John on his 1997 U.S. tour in place of Candle In The Wind, Deeper Still was voted Album of the Year by BBC2’s Terry Wogan, Back to Love, released in 2010, spawned two hits on BBC Radio 2, and in 2012 Beth debuted, The Mighty Sky, a romping collection of songs about the wonders of astronomy that earned a 2014 Grammy nomination for Best Children’s Album.

Chuck Prophet started his wild music business ride as a kid back in 1984 with Green On Red. Since then, Chuck has toured and recorded with Lucinda Williams, Aimee Mann, Alejandro Escovedo and Jonathan Richman while the likes of Ryan Adams, Solomon Burke and Heart have recorded his songs. On a red-hot creative streak over the past few records, Chuck is finally receiving the wider acclaim and audiences his music so richly deserves.

NORTH STAR: SCOTLAND SINGS CANADA SUN 30 JUL: 7.30PM PERTH CONCERT HALL

£22.50; CONCESSIONS £20 (INC £1.50 BOOKING FEE PER TICKET)

WE CLOSE THE FESTIVAL WITH A SPECIALLY CREATED SHOW TO CELEBRATE SOUTHERN FRIED’S 10TH BIRTHDAY AND THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF CANADA’S FOUNDATION.

EventScotland is proud to support the tenth anniversary of Southern Fried. Scotland is the perfect stage for cultural and sporting events alike. To find out more about what’s on this year go to visitscotland.com/events Share the #scotspirit

North Star sees some of Scotland’s finest musicians and singers – and a couple of Canadian friends – come together with a top-class house band to explore the huge influence Canadian artists have exerted over generations of writers and performers across the world but particularly those playing music whose roots are in the southern states of the USA. Way ahead of their time, The Band were without doubt the very first Americana group, bringing together elements of old-time, country, blues, early jazz, R&B and rock’n’roll and their own unique magic to create something that sounded utterly new and authentically antique at the same time. Another three iconic Canadian artists – Neil Young, Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell defined what it was to be a songwriter in the late 60’s and early 70s, and the contours they carved out on that map have barely changed since. Their massive influence arguably looms larger now than ever, irrespective of genre, but especially on the music and musicians that Southern Fried embraces. North Star will also include songs by some of Canada’s seemingly endless roll-call of great artists in a unique one-off show that will appeal to all fans of great songwriting.

His artist’s portfolio boasts portraits of Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, James Brown, Muddy Waters, BB King, Nick Cave, Liam Gallagher and Keith Flint. In this new selection of photographs taken at Southern Fried between 2011 and 2016, co-curated by Iliyana Nedkova and Andy Shearer, Marc shares his vision and intuition for getting to the heart of the music, evoking the aura of the performer, on and offstage. marcmarnie.com @MarcMarnie
