Whether this is your first or your sixth Southern Fried – you are very welcome to Scotland’s biggest festival of American roots music here in Perth. This year’s line-up welcomes back a couple of old friends and celebrates some new visitors who have not been this side of the Atlantic for quite a while. We hope you can join us to make them all feel right at home over a weekend of music, food, song and maybe even a little dancing in the company of music-lovers from across Scotland and the world. As ever, the best way to take part is to dive right in with a Festival Pass to all the evening shows and then pick up some tickets for whichever daytime events take your fancy. If you really can’t make the whole weekend – then do join us when you can. For those poor souls who can’t get to Perth at all, you can catch up with highlights on BBC Radio Scotland’s Another Country with Ricky Ross on Friday 26 July at 8.05pm. But why be on the wrong end of the radio when you can be here with us making the noise? See you soon!

Join us for the whole weekend, see all the nighttime acts and save up to 30%. Wherever you see this ticket, the event is included in your Festival Pass, plus there's discounted entry on other shows too. Can’t make it for the whole weekend? No problem. You can buy individual tickets for any Southern Fried event. Reduced ticket prices are available for the Late and Southern Fried shows with your Bettye LaVette and Mavericks tickets.

Based in Edinburgh but including two Perth lads in their line-up, The Holy Ghosts are a five-piece band playing rock 'n' roll with a splash of country and a dash of the blues. Razor sharp guitars, wailing harmonica, honky-tonk piano, spine-tingling three-part harmonies and charismatic stage presence make The Holy Ghosts the band to watch in 2013.

Before he settled in to becoming one of the best songwriters in captivity, Nashville’s Phil Lee spent a couple of decades playing drums, driving trucks and hauling equipment. This is country music with a rock 'n' roll heart; his road-worn voice, clever wordplay and skilled harmonica work bring Bob Dylan to mind but even though, as Phil says, “if it sounds like something, that's on purpose” he is his own man.

“The Holy Ghosts are the best live band on the Scottish music scene by far” Owen Morris (producer for Oasis and The Verve) www.theholyghosts.co.uk

“Fans of Townes Van Zandt, Gram Parsons, Guy Clark and Greg Brown will dig Lee’s strong fourth album” Atlantic City Weekly “Brash and literate and full of one-liners. He’s like the love child of Bob Dylan and Joan Rivers” The Tennessean www.philleeone.com

Finally enjoying well-deserved and hard-earned success after 50 years in the business, Bettye LaVette owns one of the great soul voices of our time. Her colourful personal and professional life are expressed powerfully in her no-holds-barred autobiography, A Woman Like Me, and in the eclectic choice of songs that she makes completely her own. “Bettye LaVette now rivals Aretha Franklin as this generation’s most vital soul singer” The New York Times “She retains a weapons grade voice that rips the guts out of the songs that take her fancy” Q “the star of the show tonight is LaVette's incredible voice… recalls the hard-learned emotional might that the late Johnny Cash brought to Nine Inch Nails' Hurt” The Guardian www.bettyelavette.com

With his last two albums, 2006’s Grammy-nominated People Gonna Talk and 2008’s The Hard Way, James Hunter delivered a classic yet perpetually modern brand of rhythm and blues that earned him two Billboard Blues Number 1's, tours with Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, Etta James and Willie Nelson, performances on Leno and Letterman and rave reviews everywhere. The new record from the James Hunter Six, Minute By Minute, is a mustlisten for anyone who loves the early soul of Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson. «««««“he is the real deal soul star and a once in a lifetime find” Blues & Soul «««««“perfectly judged R&B arrangements that spark and bounce” The Independent «««««“His original songs sound like timeless classics you don't happen to have heard before” Daily Mirror www.jameshuntermusic.com

Grammy nominated guitarist, singer and songwriter Bill Kirchen’s 40 years in the business include guitar work with Nick Lowe, Emmylou Harris, Doug Sahm, Elvis Costello and many more. Named “A Titan of the Telecaster” by Guitar Player magazine, he celebrates an American musical tradition where rock 'n' roll and country music draws upon its origins in blues and bluegrass, rockabilly, Western swing and honky-tonk. “A devastating culmination of the elegant and the funky, a really sensational musician with enormous depth” Nick Lowe “Bill Kirchen rules, it's just that simple. His no-nonsense guitar attack… is undoubtedly the real thing, scattering scorching guitar runs in all directions” Austin-American Statesman www.billkirchen.com

A band defiantly in the classic mould, Roddy Hart And The Lonesome Fire are set to make their mark this year with the release of their long-awaited eponymous album. Having released three acclaimed solo records, Hart decided to shake the singer-songwriter tag and concentrate on building an exciting and formidable seven-piece band. Working with the producer of Coldplay’s X&Y, the band spent most of last year recording and 2013 promises to be the year the band’s darkly compelling conjunction of classic Americana and Celtic soul truly comes into its own. “Packed with classic songwriting and incredible playing... essential listening” News Of The World «««««“Great lyrics, great voice, great songs. This young man deserves to be a star” The Daily Record “Echoes of a young Jackson Browne or Ron Sexsmith... Outstanding” The Daily Express www.roddyhart.com

6 £18; concessions £16 (includes booking fee) £12 (includes booking fee) for Festival Pass holders

The powerful emotional punch, vast scope and sheer precision of Tom Russell’s work rank him high among the great American writers of our time, irrespective of genre. His last two releases, Blood and Candle Smoke and Mesabi are considered his strongest works yet and were, in part, recorded with the groundbreaking roots band Calexico. Russell’s newest release, Aztec Jazz moves Americana into a new realm and his acclaimed song catalogue into uncharted territory. “An original, a brilliant songwriter with a restless curiosity and an almost violent imagination” Annie Proulx (The Shipping News, Brokeback Mountain) “Tom Russell is the last wandering Beat… a prolific and venerable artist writing the best songs of his career” San Francisco Chronicle www.tomrussell.com

AJ Roach showcased the breadth of his artistry in our Johnny Cash: Songwriter concert at last year’s Southern Fried, stealing the show as a hellfire preacher on The Man Comes Around before delivering an impossibly tender Don’t Take Your Guns To Town. His own writing blurs the line between indie and traditional folk, drawing comparisons with Will Oldham and Vic Chesnutt. A troubadour in the tradition of Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, he keeps things entertaining between songs with a dry and cutting wit. www.roachmusic.net

The Mavericks are back! The country-steeped garage band with a Cuban-American lead singer emerged from Miami with their sultry debut that was equal parts innocence, intensity and vintage influences. But time has a way of melting when you’re busy living life – and two decades have passed since their polyrhythmic brand of post-modern country gave the world All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down, Here Comes The Rain and Dance The Night Away. Their unlikely reunion has led to an acclaimed new album and rave reviews for some incendiary shows with their sensational new nine-piece live lineup. «««««“Few tonics provide quite the rush of pleasure as two hours of The Mavericks’ Latin-infused country rock served up by musicians who have honed their sound to perfection… an early contender for gig of the year” The Independent www.themavericksband.com

When future music historians look back at the strong currents circulating between the Americas in the 21st century, they will find Los Lobos, Calexico, and a charismatic, lanky Missourian singing tight harmony with a Southern belle rattling the jawbone of a donkey. David Wax and Suz Slezak form the artistic core of the David Wax Museum, and together they fuse traditional Mexican folk with American roots, indie rock, latin rhythms, infectious melodies, and call-and-response hollering to electrifying effect. “Kicks up a cloud of excitement with its high-energy border-crossing sensibility” The New Yorker “Joyful Mexo-Americana fusion, with virtuosic musical skill and virtuous harmonies” Time www.davidwaxmuseum.com

Nashville’s McCrary Sisters have long been the go-to gospel singers in Music City, appearing on Buddy Miller and Patty Griffin’s spiritual albums, with Mike Farris and on the new Mavericks album among many other credits including Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Stevie Wonder and Elvis. Their new record All The Way is a triumphant blend of classic gospel, funk, blues and soul, most of it written by the Sisters themselves. Southern Fried is proud and privileged to bring this unique group to the UK for the first time and when you see and hear them you’ll realise why we made such an effort to get them here. www.mccrarysisters.net

Perth’s own New Madrids have been writing and performing their blend of Americana, blues, country, rock and soul since 2010. Born from the founding members of Southpaw and The Revivals, they bring their audiences soaring pedal steel, electrifying lap slide guitar, Telecaster guts and gristle amd an engine room of bass and drums: all of this behind two equally distinctive voices and songwriting styles.

Join us for an authentic taste of the Southern church experience with The McCrary Sisters and friends, followed by a special version of this year's Soul Food menu in the great tradition of the Gospel Picnic, where classic Southern dishes are enjoyed after a soul-cleansing church meeting. As well as a uniquely uplifting spiritual set from The McCrary Sisters, joined by our community choir Southern Fried Voices, the show will feature a short duo set from country/bluegrass sisters Larkin Poe and a uniquely raw take on some gospel classics from an old friend of Southern Fried and guitarist to the stars, Stuart Nisbet. The show will run for approximately 75 minutes with our special Southern Fried brunch menu served in the foyer afterwards. “The sisters soaked up gospel, singing at home and in their father’s church...The McCrary Sisters’ secret ingredient to these songs is not of the musical variety. It is the combined punch of passion and pure soulfulness in their delivery that transports them, and their fans and listeners” The Alternate Root

Admission FREE Now a fixture in the festival schedule and expanded this year to cope with demand from performers, the Southern Fried Sunday Open Mic returns, hosted once again by Gav Munro. Visiting musicians and singers can join local performers in the intimate Greyfriars bar, home of Perth’s regular Open Mic nights. Rebecca and Megan Lovell are charismatic performers, experienced songwriters, and accomplished musicians blessed with soul and musical prowess well beyond their years. Featuring tight vocal harmonies and dizzying instrumental riffs, the music of Larkin Poe ranges from folk-rock to acoustic R&B and from contemporary country to delicate singer-songwriter. “These girls have the vocal and songwriting prowess to make a success of whatever genre they turn their hand to” Americana-UK www.larkinpoe.com

Brennen Leigh mixes the traditional sounds of country and bluegrass effortlessly, yet manages to remain contemporary with subject matter that is both fascinating and universal. She takes her love of classic country to another level by mixing in unconventional, lifelong literary influences. “If what passes for country music these days gives you a headache, Brennen Leigh has the remedy” Austin Chronicle www.brennenleigh.net

Southern Fried is delighted to welcome the great singer and songwriter Patty Griffin to Scotland for a long overdue and keenly anticipated visit. Her new album, American Kid, returns to typical Patty Griffin territory, which is to say that it features a group of remarkably powerful, personal and unpredictable songs arranged and performed in a style that doesn’t entirely repeat anything she’s done on her previous albums while drawing on all of them. Following her stint with his Band of Joy (alongside Darrell Scott) Robert Plant returns the favour by singing on three songs. «««««“passionate and personal, life’s rich tapestry unfolds in this amazing album” Maverick www.pattygriffin.com

We don’t normally bring artists back two years running but Darrell Scott was such a hit at last year’s Southern Fried that we couldn’t say no. Especially when we found out he was bringing along his great friend and legendary bassist Danny Thompson of John Martyn, Richard Thompson and Nick Drake fame. Star of Transatlantic Sessions, Robert Plant’s Band of Joy and Steve Earle’s Bluegrass Dukes, Darrell Scott is not only one of the finest songwriters in Nashville, but a stunning singer, a phenomenal guitar player and a gifted multi-instrumentalist to boot. “His songs are every bit as good as those of Steve Earle, John Prine or Guy Clark; and when he lays into a Les Paul or a vintage Martin, sparks fly… one of the baddest cats in Nashville. Or anywhere” The Houston Press www.darrellscott.com
