Welcome to Perth Theatre Company’s 75th anniversary season...

by Arthur Miller presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Limited

We were delighted with the response to last year’s subscription season and would like to thank you for your many kind comments. The icing on the cake was the news in June that our production of Jane Eyre won a Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland for Best Technical Presentation. Our 2010/11 season, unveiled here, opens with historical comedy The Madness of George III from the hand of national treasure, Alan Bennett. Next up there’s a musical treat with 2 Pianos 4 Hands before we find ourselves cheering, booing and shouting “he’s behind you” as our traditional family pantomime Aladdin takes to the stage. In the spring we take Perth Theatre’s work out on the road as Arthur Miller’s classic Death of a Salesman opens in Perth prior to a Scottish tour. We close the season with another award-winner, The Government Inspector, winner of the Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland for Best Use of Music and Sound (it was also nominated for another three awards). Directed by Gerry Mulgrew, who gave us last year’s romp Tam O’Shanter, it offers a riotous end to the season. We look forward to welcoming you back.

Looking to the future

“If the interior was beautiful by day, it was absolutely gorgeous by night... a theatrical gem of its kind”

“If the interior was beautiful by day, it was absolutely gorgeous by night... a theatrical gem of its kind” So said the Perthshire Advertiser at the opening of Perth Theatre in September 1900. Since then our much loved auditorium has been appreciated by literally millions of people keeping our theatre at the heart of social and artistic life in Perth for more than 110 years.

Find Out More

In this, our 75th anniversary year, it is our ambition to honour the history of Perth Theatre company, build on its success and take us confidently into the future with a theatre prepared for generations to come. In May we unveiled a transformative £13million scheme which restores and conserves our historic auditorium, adds a new 225 capacity performance space, greatly enhances facilities for our many expanding youth and community groups and activities and re-invents the theatre foyers with level access and a new, additional entrance on Mill Street.

You can see the plans on display at the theatre now or find them online at www.horsecross.co.uk/ perththeatreredevelopment

Join members of the Horsecross team and Bill Black, from the theatre redevelopment architects RMA, for a presentation of our plans for the theatre redevelopment on Saturday 25 September at 11am. The event is free: tickets are available from the Box Office. There will also be theatre tours through the day. We hope you can join us.

Support Us

Our theatre visitors and subscribers will be crucial in bringing this ambition to life and securing a bright future for this beautiful theatre. To send feedback and find out more about how you can help us reach our target visit www.horsecross.co.uk or call Louisa Jacobs on 01738 477721

“clever, humane, beautifully wrought”

The Observer

Tue 28 Sep – Sat 9 Oct

7.45pm, Sat matinee 2.30pm starring Simon Ward and Susan Penhaligon The year is 1786. George III is King. King of England. He has a loving wife, a nation of subjects, a loyal parliament, and the world kneels at his feet... But he’s a little odd. The king’s behaviour is becoming increasingly erratic, and word has it he’s addressed an oak tree as the King of Prussia! Doctors are called in, parliament falters, and the Prince Regent manoeuvres himself into power. From the hand of national treasure Alan Bennett (The History Boys, Talking Heads), The Madness of George III is a brilliant exploration of duty and kingship, an epic play about the ties that bind us together as family, as a society and as a nation. Gripping drama, dangerous politics and irreverent comedy collide in a rollercoaster ride where the health of the nation is at the mercy of the mental health of one man. Starring Simon Ward (Zulu Dawn, Young Churchill, All Creatures Great And Small) and Susan Penhaligon (The Land That Time Forgot, No Sex Please We’re British, Bouquet of Barbed Wire), this is the first touring production of the play since the original award-winning production by the National Theatre in 1991 and the subsequent hit 1994 film starring Nigel Hawthorne. Produced by Wilde Enterprises in association with Eastbourne Theatres, Haymarket Basingstoke and South Hill Park Arts Centre

Toronto Globe and Mail

Tue 9 – Sat 20 Nov

7.45pm, Sat matinee 2.30pm starring Kevin Farrell and Steven Worbey (Katzenjammer) 2 Pianos 4 Hands is the touching and irresistibly funny story of Ted and Richard, two young prodigies, who share one goal: concert pianist stardom. Over a period that covers 15 years and dozens of characters, we witness their journey from childhood to adulthood, through a world populated by nervous pupils, pushy parents, eccentric teachers, stage fright, dreams of greatness and constant practice. This award-wining show has played in over 150 productions to two million people worldwide since its premiere in Canada in 1996. The result is a joyful blend of theatre, comedy and virtuoso piano playing, all performed by the internationally popular musical comedy duo Katzenjammer. audio description: Thu 18 Nov, 7.35pm; Sat 20 Nov, 2.20pm BSL sign interpreted performance: Sat 20 Nov, 2.30pm captioned performance: Fri 19 Nov, 7.45pm Post Show Talk: Tue 16 Nov

“by common consent, this is one of the finest dramas in the whole range of American theatre” The New York Times Fri 11 – Sat 26 Feb preview Thu 10 Feb 7.45pm, Sat matinee 2.30pm

'Willy Loman never made a lot of money. His name was never in the paper. He’s not the finest character that ever lived. But he’s a human being, and a terrible thing is happening to him. So attention must be paid.’ 34 years ago travelling salesman Willie Loman climbed into his car to chase the American dream: running on hope and ‘riding on a smile and a shoeshine’ into the land of opportunity. This is the journey of his life, told in one day. Willie, now 63, returns home for the last time to his family, with his memories, his daydreams and his terrible fear that somewhere along the road he might have taken a wrong turn. Written by the legendary Arthur Miller (The Crucible, All My Sons, A View from the Bridge) Death of a Salesman is arguably his greatest work. Described as the first great American tragedy, Death of a Salesman helped Miller gain the reputation of being a man who understood the deep essence of the United States. Addressing the painful conflicts within one family, the play also considers the cost of blind faith in the American Dream. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1945 and still punches with full force 66 years after its premiere. audio description: Thu 24 Feb, 7.35pm; Sat 26 Feb, 2.20pm BSL sign interpreted performance: Sat 26 Feb, 2.30pm captioned performance: Fri 25 Feb, 7.45pm Post Show Talk: Tue 22 Feb

Communicado presents

by Nicolai Gogol, translated by Adrian Mitchell

directed by Gerry Mulgrew

“This Government Inspector is not good – it’s great. Every theatrical element is used to one glorious end: to make the audience laugh” The Observer Fri 18 Mar – Sat 2 Apr preview Thu 17 Mar 7.45pm, Sat matinee 2.30pm

Bribes, mis-directed contracts, mis-allocation of public money, fiddled expenses. Panic. Sound familiar? A penniless nobody from the big city arrives in a small town, where he is mistaken for the all-powerful government inspector by its corrupt and self-serving officials. In this age of abuses of office, political squabbling and publicly-funded duck islands, The Government Inspector’s hilarious and vicious expose of the corruption of (petty) power, is more timely than ever. Following a sell-out UK tour, Communicado’s hysterical production of Gogol’s classic satire on bureaucracy and human vanity comes to Perth. Last in Perth with the acclaimed Tam O’Shanter, Gerry Mulgrew directs this feisty adaptation with trademark energy and musical invention, creating fast-paced black comedy with an electrifying cast and live Balkan-inspired music. Winner of the 2009-10 Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland for Best Use of Music and Sound, The Government Inspector pulls off that rare trick of providing belly laughs and food for thought in a single entertaining evening at the theatre. audio description: Thu 31 Mar, 7.35pm; Sat 2 Apr, 2.20pm BSL sign interpreted performance: Sat 2 Apr, 2.30pm captioned performance: Fri 1 Apr, 7.45pm Post Show Talk: Tue 29 Mar

Gagarin Way by Gregory Burke

Fri 4 + Sat 5 Mar: 7.45pm

From Neverland to the glens of Scotland, from magical islands to Arctic wastes, from society drawing rooms to couthy firesides – no matter where he is, Barrie is the master storyteller. Your guide for the evening, his eagle eye exposes the humour, cruelty, love and dreams that make up the theatre of life. But lurking in all the stories - Peter Pan, Julie Logan, What Every Woman Knows, The Twelve Pound Look - there is the enigma of Barrie himself: the lad from Kirriemuir who became the world's leading playwright; the man who moved between whimsy and the tragedy of war; the boy who would never grow old. Splinters Productions (For the Islands I Sing, Scot of the Anarchic) pay tribute to Barrie’s genius in this magical four-hander. £14.50, £10; concessions £12.50; children £7 “amazing evocation of Barrie’s life and work. A simply stunning production!” The Courier “The magic of storytelling enthrals all” The Herald

Toujours l’Amour returns to Perth by popular demand after last year's sell-out performances. The story of Edith Piaf’s life is reflected in the songs she sang; songs about the ecstasy and the despair of love. And no one was better qualified on that subject than she was - her turbulent love-affairs were the talk of Paris society. Toujours l’Amour tells the story of Piaf’s life and loves in words as well as music including such well-known titles as La Vie En Rose, Hymne l’Amour, Les Trois Cloches and Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien, as well as many other familiar melodies, all sung in their original French. £11; no concessions

'I'm a troublemaker... I like causing trouble. It's my hobby. I think it's important tay have a hobby... keeps you out ay trouble.' The breakthrough play by Gregory Burke, writer of the acclaimed Black Watch, Gagarin Way tells the cruel and funny story of a human heist gone horribly wrong. Two disgruntled factory workers kidnap a visiting company executive to make a point - but what is exactly their point? And do they both have the same agenda? £14.50, £10; concessions £12.50 “Gregory Burke's blistering, brilliant, crazily confident first play” The Guardian Advisory: features adult language and extreme violence – not suitable for under 16s. Thu 5 - Sat 7 May: 7.45pm, Sat matinee 2.30 pm

The story begins with Michael and Agnes on their wedding day and traces their life together over a period of 50 years. In that time we watch them go through their wedding night jitters, raise a family, negotiate mid-life crises, quarrel, separate, reconcile and grow old together, all to the strains of a clever and charming score. Starring real life husband and wife Ian Grieve and Amanda Beveridge, who last appeared together on the Perth stage 16 years ago, this intimate and nostalgic work is best described through the titles of the songs including I Love My Wife, My Cup Runneth Over, Love Isn't Everything, The Honeymoon Is Over, When the Kids Get Married, What Is A Woman? and Some One Needs Me. Nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical £14.50, £10; concessions £12.50; children £7 Based on “The Fourposter” by Jan de Hartog Originally Produced on Broadway by David Merrick Originally Directed by Gower Champion Presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Limited on behalf of Music Theatre International of New York
