behind and lightening the forehand it is important to remind the horse to use his hindquarters. Some recommend a tail bandage around the quarters but this is a flawed method as a fixed pressure, whether light or heavy, is soon ignored. If you put on a belt or wristwatch you feel it for about 30 seconds then the constant nerve stimulation causes the nerves to switch off so you become desensitised to the watch or belt. A loose, dangly bracelet, on the other hand, constantly reminds you of its presence so it makes sense to use a lunge aid that constantly moves a little and keeps reminding the horse to step through more. A light, communicating and equal contact that encourages the horse

with these things in mind. Having a self-centring front section that keeps the horse in a soft equal contact also makes lungeing easier for the handler. It means that no adjustment is needed for rein changes and that you don’t need to keep the sides level or equal as they always will be as they form a loop. You can swiftly move from going large to spiralling and polework knowing that the contact will remain equal and there’s no danger of the horse being stuck in the wrong bend. The small safety loop prevents the hind leg action affecting the mouth whilst allowing communication around the horse. Avoid lungeing from the bit as this detracts from the equal contact and can result in nose-tilt.
Now that EquiAmi has made lungeing easier you can develop exercises to enhance suppleness, lightness and core strength. Lots of transitions, rein changes, spiralling, pole work and raised pole work all add variety and make lungeing more of a fun activity whilst bringing about physical changes that will really help your horse under saddle. Starting with a square of four poles about 12 m apart you can work around them then shorten your rein and move to a corner so the horse works a few times over a smaller circle to include two poles. Adding more poles over time increases the hind limb activity and lifting of the shoulders and back whilst developing core strength. Essentially we are putting the equine athlete in the gym in the same way as any human athlete would use the gym to improve their performance and core strength. Changing the ‘menu’ and reorganising activities are key to having a happy, attentive horse. www.equiami.com 01584 891049 enquiries@equiami.com

wild equids, such as zebras, have also been observed displaying this behaviour. What is it about our domestic environment which causes horses to behave in this way?
Prevalence in Thoroughbreds is high, with more of these horses demonstrating weaving and crib-biting than in any other breed. Whilst research attempts to clarify if this is purely management-related, or if breeding itself plays a part,
THE ROOTS OF STEREOTYPY Defined as an abnormal repetitive behaviour with no obvious function or goal, stereotypic behaviours are prevalent in horses across the Globe. Although often regarded by owners as an outlet for 'boredom', the true underlying causes are more complex than this. Many researchers believe stereotypys, commonly referred to as 'stable vices', allow
the fact that many Thoroughbreds have been raced and therefore subjected to intensive management practices means that this distinction is difficult. Training-specific management practices are also known to influence horses involved in other sports. During a study across three disciplines, a higher occurrence of stereotypy was reported in Dressage and Eventing horses than in

behaviours seen in horses, the origin of these is not random. Domestic equines, whilst having the capacity to show the wide range of normal behaviours displayed by their freeranging counterparts, now exist in highly controlled environments. This means that the opportunity to carry out their full range of behaviours is greatly reduced. For example, wild equids have evolved to forage a variety of plants to satisfy their diets. Yet domestic horses are often stabled with a single type of roughage and turned out in fields where many plants have been removed to prioritise to grass growth. Whilst the dietary requirement for horses to forage has been largely removed, the behavioural motivation still exists. Lack of opportunity to carry out this behaviour causes continual frustration for these horses. Scientists believe that each stereotypic behaviour has either an oral or a locomatory basis. Oral stereotypic behaviours include crib-biting, windsucking and repetitive licking, to name a few. Locomotary-based stereotypys include weaving, box-walking and door-kicking. Oral stereotypys are thought to be rooted in feed-related frustrations and locomotary stereotypys considered to be movement-based aggravations. However, the inter-connectedness of their causing factors mean that they cannot be categorised completely separately. 18
amount of time spent outside of the stable during training, a greater prevalence of box-walking was recorded in Endurance horses, possibly due to the physiological reward of movement or a lower level of familiarisation with the stabled environment. Commonly, one of the earliest stressful events shown to induce stereotypy is weaning. Since Isolation and confinement can both cause stereotypy and these stressors often feature during the weaning process, this can be a contributory event. Equids are not alone in their exhibition of stereotypy. This type of behaviour also exists in a host of other captive animals. Examples of this includes tongue-rolling in cows, bar-mouthing in gerbils, back-flipping in chinchillas and cage-pacing in tigers. Whilst scientists are cautious about over-extrapolating from one species to another, similarities do exist and it is well accepted that these behaviours often appear following confinement or isolation. COMBATING STEREOTYPY Stereotypic behaviour has been an issue in horse management for as long as humans have been caring for horses in captivity. However, traditional methods for Horsemart

treatment of stereotypic behaviours continue to be a welfare concern. Traditional interventions include fitting a cribbing collar as a physical preventative, applying sour tasting gel to surfaces as a deterrent, use of electric shock and installing anti-weaving bars. However, when considered alongside the root causes, thwarting a stereotypic behaviour without addressing any underlying issues appears not only callous but is also likely to exacerbate any issues. Whilst many equestrians fear stereotypic behaviours can be learnt from one horse to another and so seek to limit exposure to this, there is very little scientific evidence that these behaviours are learnt by observation. It is more widely accepted that horses which are housed within the same environment are subjected to similar stressors and so multiple horses may display behavioural anomalies within the same yard environment. Ironically, isolating horses is likely to increase their own motivation to carry out this behaviour, rather than reduce it. Scientists instead encourage owners to enrich the horse's environment as a method to combat stereotypic behaviour. Whilst there is likely no cure, application of enrichment has been shown to considerably reduce the occurrence of stereotypy. Enrichment also plays a key role in the prevention of its development. Steps such as increasing the provision of roughage, introducing more than one roughagefeeding location and providing multiple types of roughage
Arguably the most valuable method of eliminating the stresses of isolation is the implementation of group housing. More common overseas, particularly in Germany, group housing horses allows a range of normal social behaviour and, as such, reduces stereotypy. SPOT-LIGHT ON WELL-BEING Sometimes the performance of stereotypic behaviours can get separated from their original causing factors. Therefore, even when welfare is improved, a horse may continue to perform the repetitive behaviour. This is called 'emancipation'. In some cases, abnormal repetitive behaviours become emancipated and the horse continues to carry out the repetitive behaviour, even following increased enrichment. Scientists suggest that, contrary to the inclination to cease any management changes, enrichment efforts should continue since these will enhance the well-being of the horse, even if this is not evidenced by behaviour change. Terminology used to describe horse behaviour is important. More than a complex labelling system, language portrays and develops attitudes. Leading Welfare Scientists express concern that the outdated term 'stable vice' is a misnomer which directs a negative focus towards the horse itself, rather than towards the management issues which create this behaviour. As such, Scientists seek to phase out the term 'stable vice', replacing it with the terminology described in

In addressing isolation, stable mirrors have been shown to reduce stereotypy. Researchers attribute this to either creating the presence of 'another horse' or generally providing a distraction. Winter 2016

comfortable stable. Have you often wondered about other bedding materials for your horse? We’ll walk you through the choices of equine materials and the criteria for choosing the horse bedding that will work best for you and your horse.
HEMP
Don’t let the cost of your bedding give you sleepless nights
Bedding material made from the chopped stems of hemp is a great alternative to shavings and paper. Hemp bedding is growing in popularity, as it is cost effective and great for deep littering.
+
- More absorbent than shavings - Dust-free and non-palatable - Light and easy to muck out - Rapidly breaks down to make good compost - Wrapped bales are clean and easy to handle and store
-
- Bales are relatively expensive and the initial cost of bedding down are off-putting - Manufacturers claim that long-term use make it competitively economical
RUBBER MATTING Wall-to-wall rubber matting or tiles developed as a complete horse bed. This provides a soft layer for the horses, a small amount of bedding can be used on top to soak up any wet. It also provides extra grip for horses getting up and down in their stables, which is thought to minimise the risk of injuries.
+
- Provides a comparatively soft non-slip base, guarding against capped hocks and other knocks. - Easy to muck out and can be hosed down - Is thought to keep a stable slightly warmer
Investing in affordable luxury Once you have set your Aubiose bed, it will only need topping up every five to fourteen days (depending on the horse/pony). Liquids are soaked up in a small area and are retained there, so there is less chance of wet material mixing with the rest of the bed. The top layer remains warm, soft and dry. Aubiose is an excellent compost material which breaks down rapidly and keeps the muck heap to a minimum. Managed correctly, Aubiose will save you both time and money.
-
- Initial cost to buy the matting - Not aesthetically pleasing - Can be slow to dry in the winter
It pays to bed with Aubiose Winter 2016

HORSEBOX FEATURE Horsemart

Bloomfields is the european leading brand in 3.5 tonne horseboxes. These lorries are stylish, economical and has your horses safety at the forefront of their designs. Bloomfield’s horseboxes are designed and built fit for purpose, using strict quality assurance guidelines. For instance the in house fibre glass technicians have created luxury smooth, edge free, reinforced tack lockers, wheel arch covers, and fully moulded sliding partition - a UK 3.5 tonne horsebox first. Giving outstanding strength, safety, and style. Bloomfields also offers the upgrade to extended living space, giving even more luxury in your SL, SLE or Eventer model. Alexanders Grand National lorry is ideal for those single horse owners who also want luxury travel and facilities at their disposal. The Alexanders Grand National is popular with its full overnight living and it includes seating for 3-4 people which pulls out to create a double bed, removable table, wardrobe, highline storage cupboards, gas hob and sink and it is finished in either light or dark oak with different levels of luxury. The horse area includes the self collapsing

breast bar system, large opening windows for maximum ventilation and 2 external tack lockers for the saddles and bridles. It has 750kg payload on 3.5 tonne chassis but we can upgrade the horsebox to 3.9 tonne to allow 1200kg payload if you are carrying 2 horses. If payload is your priority, then the Alexanders York model is ideal, with a payload of up to 2000kg depending on the features you select. It’s a stylish design, capable of 40mpg and comes with a 4 year Renault warranty. The Oakley Sport 2 is also a popular choice. Oakley is a brand that has been around for many years, offering exceptional customer service. As Brian Oakley explains: “Our policy has always been to build boxes to individual customers requirements and this calls for very close co-operation from the drawing board to the finished product. Working alongside our customers in this way has helped to forge long and lasting friendships and this has been a key to our company’s success”.
Dujardin: “I am delighted with my Boss - the layout is great - everything is where you need it. The box is so easy to drive and the horses are relaxed and comfortable while travelling and at the competition. I have seen many two horse boxes throughout Europe and I would choose no other” Foxy are another brand that has rocketed in popularity. Owned by the likes of racing trainer Richard Guest, these 3.5 tonne lorries are perfect for taking horses to events. Their unique stallion design, is perfect for unpredictable travellers and young horses as they do not have a breast bar. The horses are separated by either a full or 3/4 height padded partition and 2 full height grilled access doors (leading to the groom area) eliminating the need for a breast bar. The Foxy boxes also feature a low ramp, which is brilliant for difficult loaders. [1] Bloomfield’s extended living area in a 3.5 tonne horsebox [2] Oakley Sport 2 3.5 tonne lorry

WHAT IS PAYLOAD? Payload is the amount of weight your lorry can legally carry. Everything needs to be taken into account - the horses, the tack, water, people, dogs; absolutely everything. If your box has a 1000kg payload, you need to add up the weight of your horse and everything else travelling within the box, [4]

From humble beginnings, Dean built his first horsebox in the stable yard of his parents house (called Bloomfield), and has since gone from strength to strength. Now manufacturing horseboxes from a 12,000 square ft factory and employing over 25 of the industries most skilled and trained workforce. Timber rails are unforgiving and can be fatal if a horse hits at speed or puts it leg over the timber. Rails will eventually break leaving splinters and nails exposed. Fencing with timber rails means that you will have to repair and maintain constantly because they rot, break and warp! With the cost of timber constantly increasing so will your
