IF I WERE A COW…

by Crystal Lyons Have you ever been seriously aggravated with the way your dog or horse was acting and out of the blue, you got this irritating notion that God was chuckling?? And you thought you might’ve heard Him clearing His throat, (that’s never a good sign) and then saying something like: “That’s exactly how you act!” Maybe I’m not the only one who’s had God show me a mirror of myself in an animal’s behavior.

What about selective hearing? Men aren’t the only ones who have it, though it DOES run heavily within the male genome. My dog DEFINITELY has it, but come to think of it… he is a male. Duke can be so quick to respond to my commands, unless he has caught the scent of something that’s intriguing, and then suddenly he goes bone-headed deaf. But wait, I think I could recall once… or twice… okay, multiple times where I have NOT wanted to hear what God was telling me to do, or NOT do! Maybe selective hearing isn’t gender oriented after all?

How about the way dogs just LOVE to roll in whatever is rotten! What’s up with that? I just do NOT understand the desire to roll in something so repulsive! Then I hear God’s quiet voice down inside say… “really”? And I’m immediately reminded of how I can find myself gravitating to some juicy piece of gossip. ESPECIALLY if it’s something negative about someone I don’t particularly like or trust! That negative piece of information just sucks me right in and I revel in the feeling of superiority. God told me once, the way a dog makes itself repulsive smelling in the natural by rolling in a dead corpse is exactly how enjoying gossip makes us smell to Him. Moving on…

What about that boss mare in the herd. You know the one I’m referring to. She’s the one who calls all the shots and is convinced she’s superior. She rules the roost, making it almost impossible for another horse to challenge her authority. I hate to admit it but I can relate to boss mares. I like the saying…

“I’m not bossy, I just have better ideas!”

I don’t know if you do this, but sometimes when I’ve helped gather cattle, I’ll go to spying out all the different personality types in the herd. I LOVE those cows that are compliant! They just go with the flow. They have no preference as to where they’re being driven; they’re satisfied to stay with the crowd. But that cow that’s got her head up and ears alert, THAT’S the one that’s going to bolt! She’s the independent thinker. If not handled right, she will be the one that causes you to lose the whole dang herd and have to

re-gather! Have you ever noticed how the one cow that gets by you, out maneuvers you and is smart enough to not go where YOU wanted, is the one we call “stupid”?

Kind of an oxymoron huh. Those kind of cows are the first ones to get hauled off to the sale barn because they’re trouble.

Well dang it, I catch myself always ducking a situation where I might get “trapped” in some way. “Oh ride with us to such-nsuch.” My IMMEDIATE thought is, “what if the situation there is totally boring and I want to leave but can’t?” Yep… I’m that exasperating cow who’s head is up always looking for a way of escape “just in case”. Not to mention, my two sons were cesarean, ‘cuz obviously I’m not a good calver. Yep, I would’ve been hauled to the kill pen long ago! If I were a cow…

Horses Can Communicate With Us Horse lovers have been saying it for years. It’s just that everyone else did not believe it. Now, thanks to a research study, there is proof that horses can communicate with humans.

Scientists in Norway conducted a research project involving 23 horses or different breeds and ages. Would horses be able to make decisions based on their own preferences? Would the horses be able to communicate their preferences to humans? Those were some of the questions that scientists had with this study.

HORSES CAN COMMUNICATE As it turns out, horses are pretty smart after all. All 23 of the horses were able to reliably communicate with humans within 14 days.

The study focused on one topic for the horses. Did it want a blanket on, did it want the blanket off, or did it prefer no change. The horses were taught to use display boards that they could touch with their muzzles to indicate a preference.

One white board displayed a horizontal bar, another displayed a vertical bar, while a third was blank.

Horses could touch their muzzle to the horizontal bar to indicate that they wanted a blanket put on, to the blank board to indicate that they did not want a change, or to the vertical bar to indicate that they would like the blanket removed.

The training routine consisted of ten steps, beginning with simply having the horse touch the display board with its muzzle. The final step involved the researchers assessing the horse’s understanding of choice. Early motivation was provided in the form of carrot slices. Training sessions took only 10 or 15 minutes each day over the two-week period.

HORSE SENSE By the conclusion of the study all 23 horses were able to communicate their preferences. What’s more interesting is that the horses were able to express preferences that were considered reasonable. On warm days the horses preferred to not wear a blanket. On cold, windy, or wet days the horses preferred a blanket. We would expect people to make decisions like this, but as it turns out horses are able to understand that a blanket will make them warmer.

While all of the horses were successful in the research, some learned a little faster than others. The warm-blood breeds, for example, learned a bit faster than the cold-blood breeds. Researchers also noticed that stress slowed learning as well, though this has already been shown in earlier studies too. Another interesting discovery during this study was that as the horses became aware that they could communicate with humans, their motivation to participate in training seemed to increase.

LIVING ON A FARM

Apart from being close to the land, the produce, and the animals, living on a farm offers more in terms of our health. Here are eight health benefits of living on a farm.

1. Healthier Immune System In General Living on a farm will result in a healthier immune system. How? Well, according to a study, growing up on a farm helps reduce the body’s immunological responses to food proteins. In layman’s term, it means those who grow up on a farm have reduced likelihood of developing an allergic disease.

The study explains that when you live on a farm, you develop more regulatory T-lymphocytes. These are cells that pacify immune responses and limit inflammation. Allergies, inflammatory, and autoimmune diseases develop when these cells are reduced.

2. Specifically, Less Likely to Get Asthma and Allergies There are about 6.8 million children in the US who suffer from asthma. Of these, children raised on farms, specifically dairy farms, have lower rates of asthma and allergies. According to a study, this could be due to farm dust, which triggered an immune system response from the lungs of mice that protected them from allergies and asthma.

A separate study also found that exposure to farm environments may prevent (or dampen) allergies and asthma, even in adults.

3. Better Mental Health In another study, Norwegian researchers had one group of participants with problems like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and personality disorders work with animals on a farm; the other group didn’t have any such interactions.

The study found that those who had an interaction with farm animals had improved self-efficacy and coping skills compared to those who had not spent any time working with animals. The researchers believe this improvement in mental health may be due to having physical contact with another living being through activities like milking, feeding, and caring for farm animals (which may promote self-esteem and confidence).

4. Farm Work is Great for Physical Fitness Working on a farm will help you burn calories and develop those muscles. For example, for a 150-pound person, bailing hay for 30 minutes burns 277 calories and butchering a pig burns 170 calories, according to an issue of Food & Wine.

5. Fresh Produce Equals More Nutrients You know what they say, the nearer you get your food from its source, the better and more nutritious it is. Well, if you live on a farm, you can get your food fresh.

6. Early to Bed, Early to Rise When you live on a farm, you follow a routine. The schedule starts early and ends early as well. You’d need plenty of sleep to replenish the energy you lost during the day’s work. This early to bed, early to rise routine is more in tune with our natural Circadian rhythm.

7. Plenty of Vitamin D from the Sun Vitamin D, which we get primarily from the Sun, is important to our body.

“To sum it all up, nearly every cell in the body needs vitamin D to function at full capacity,” says Dr. Robert Heaney, Professor of Medicine at Creighton University.

8. Fresher Air If you live on a farm, you breathe fresher, cleaner air. This is due to having more plants absorb carbon dioxide. You can prepare them at home with this recipe for Milo’s Sweet Tea Wings: Ingredients: • 3 cups Milo’s Sweet Tea • 2.5 pounds chicken wings, cut into drums and flats • 2 teaspoons garlic salt, divided • 1.5 - 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper, depending on heat preference • 2 teaspoons garlic powder • 2 teaspoons chili powder • 2 teaspoons paprika • 2 teaspoons lemon pepper Instructions: • In a medium bowl, whisk together Milo’s Sweet Tea and 2 teaspoons garlic salt; set aside. Place chicken wings in a large shallow dish. Pour Milo’s mixture over chicken; cover and refrigerate for 8 hours.

• Preheat grill to medium or oven to 400 F. • In a large bowl, combine remaining garlic salt, cayenne, garlic powder, chili powder, paprika, and lemon pepper. Toss chicken and spices in large zip lock bag or bowl until evenly coated.

• For grill, place wings over heat turning frequently. Cook for 20-25 minutes or until the internal temperature is 165 degrees and skin is crispy.

THE KNIFE I’m a big believer in every horseman having a sharp, easily accessible, knife on them when they’re around stock. The knife is not just to cut baling twine, slice bacon, or to whittle when you’re bored. It can save lives; maybe yours.

One of the 10 essentials that every rider should carry on every ride is a very important tool: a knife.

In fact knives are known to be one of the first tools ever invented. Even though a trail ride isn’t typically a “survival” scenario, a knife is an essential tool for every rider heading into the great outdoors; around the field or around a Wilderness.

What do you really use a knife for?

I recently asked readers of my facebook page (www. facebook.com/TrailMeister/) to be honest and share how they usually end up using their knife on a ride or camping trip. Here’s what they had to say: Top 4 Uses for a Knife 1. Opening packets (of food) 2. Repairs 3. Making a spark (with a fire steel) 4. Cutting rope in case of a wreck Other than the wreck these are pretty mundane uses. These are all normal reasons why we need a knife when we’re on the trail and they’re all valid.

But what type of knife?

I prefer a fixed blade knife that I carry on my belt. In an emergency, I can pull it out, not worry about opening a blade, and quickly handle whatever situation I’m in at the time. I like the blade to be about 3.5 to 4 inches long. Long enough to get to the bottom of the peanut butter jar!

There’s also a place for a folding knife. The cowboys of yore nearly all carried a folding pocketknife. They were called “Stockman’s Knives” and usually had three blades. You can still find these useful tools and I can usually find one in my pocket. You may not cut yourself out of a wreck with one, but for opening a bag of fritos they’re perfect!

For quick repairs a multi-tool calls my saddlebags home.

One of the biggest pros of the multi-tool is undoubtedly the pliers. The entire tool is designed around these pliers. Pliers are a tool that people wind up needing a lot more than they think they will, and being able to carry them with you is a huge bonus.

• Stores more compactly • Multi-use… If it’s a multi-tool, you’ll have additional gadgets beside the blade itself in one compact package Serrated or not?

Ropes today are often made of nylon or polypropylene, which can be hard to cut with an ordinary or plain blade. So, the serrated blade, or a partially serrated blade has become popular with many people.

Plain Blades: In general, a plain edge is best when doing push cuts. Also, the plain edge is superior when control, accuracy, and clean cuts are necessary.

Push cuts: The main cutting is done by pushing the edge through the thing-to-be-cut. For example, when you shave, you push the edge of the knife through your beard. When peeling an apple, you push the edge under the skin of the apple. When chopping wood, you try to push the edge into and through the wood.

Serrated Blades: In general, the serrated edge works better for slicing cuts, especially through hard or tough surfaces, where the serrations tend to grab and cut the surface easily.

Slicing cuts: The cutting action is substantially done by dragging the edge across the thing-to-be-cut. When you slice a tomato, you drag the edge across the tomato as you cut through it. Slicing and sawing are examples of slicing cuts.

Well there you go; my thoughts on knives. I feel naked when caught without a knife as it is the most basic of tools. I can cut baling twine, lash ropes, make a fire and a million other uses. Heck, I even use my knife as a screwdriver at times. I urge you to find, and carry, a knife whenever you’re around horses and mules. You’ll wonder how you ever got around without one!

In 1991, orphaned nurse mare foals were brought to Victoria’s attention. Since then, Nurse Mare Foal Rescue is our main priority and has progressively grown to save THOUSANDS of foals. We offer a neonatal and intensive care facility for orphan nurse mare foals. We provide the foals with the necessary attention in order to secure a future in adoptive homes. Annually, we save 150-200 throw away foals from a certain death and provide them with the opportunity to a healthy life. One or two at a time, horses have come in and out of her life inspiring her to firmly believe that there is always a horse out there in need of refuge, and always a need for someone to feel responsible and intervene on that animal’s behalf. Establishing the Last Chance Corral in 1986 was the realization of her vision of creating a muchneeded facility to offer horses asylum.

Today, the Last Chance Corral proudly offers horses hope, shelter, and opportunity regardless of their situation or problems. Be it psychological

Finding a Suitable Horse

By Lynn Palm I am so excited to do this series on western dressage. I am positive this new discipline following classical dressage with a western horse is going to give the western industry its next step in developing better horsemen. Dressage promotes “Riding Well” and “Being the Rider Your Horse Deserves!”

When I was young, it did not take me long to learn that if I wanted to participate in the sport of riding, I had to learn to become a good rider.

I was in the dressage saddle learning this. Learning to become a good rider was not only necessary in the dressage saddle but is required in any saddle on any breed of horse. As a young rider I felt so fortunate to learn dressage because it was a new discipline in the U.S. at the time. I recognized that I rode NO differently in the dressage saddle than I did in a western saddle or hunt saddle.

I found it very interesting that the training I was learning with dressage worked on any kind of horse. Breed didn’t matter then and it doesn’t matter now. Dressage gave me the best foundation possible as well as a solid understanding of correct fundamentals about riding.

It also helped me understand correct training according to the horse’s conformation, instincts, behaviors, temperament, and personality.

Most importantly, I learned that it takes TIME to train horses naturally. The goal is to teach the horse to do tasks with manners, obedience, and willingness to perform. Learning dressage has taught me that a balanced rider, communication through the rider’s natural aids, and a balanced horse will give you willing and confident responses that will last the horse’s lifetime. The key here is that it is training with understanding, not training through submission.

By using dressage principles, I have been able to achieve success as a competitor and trainer of horses for more than four decades. As a top competitor in AQHA for many years, I showed numerous horses that performed in multiple western and English events. Dressage can be done with western horses and in the western saddle. I am so excited to be a part of western dressage as it starts! I encourage you to follow their tests and levels because this will lead to a more controlled and responsive horse, whether you are on the trails or in the show ring.

You may be wondering what horse is best for western dressage. If you’ve watched traditional English dressage on television or gone to an event, you have no doubt noticed that many of the horses are warmbloods.

As wonderful as those horses may be (and they are), don’t worry…you don’t need a warmblood to participate in western dressage. The beauty of this hot new discipline is that any horse and all breeds are suited for it.

This includes all the stock horse breeds, such as Quarter Horses, Paints, Appaloosas, Palominos, and Buckskins. You’ll also see many “non-stock” breeds, including Morgans, Arabians, Saddlebreds, even draft horses, and ponies. If you are happy with the horse you are currently riding and have a good bond with him, that’s all you need to get started. You certainly don’t have to go buy a different horse.

I hope many of you reading this will decide to join the Western Dressage Association of America and get involved.

If you are an “English only” rider, be careful… once you get in a good western saddle and ride a test, you may get hooked. Why not? Give it a try!
