Thursday, March 27, 2014 1 PM CST

Welcome to our seventh annual Sun Country Bull & Female Sale It hardly seems possible that seven years have rolled by since we started this sale. This year’s sale offering is being brought to you by the Alexander, Anwender and Lamontagne families. Like last year, we have each fed our own bulls and developed them for optimum growth, not maximum growth. The bulls you will find in this sale are sound, athletic and ready to go to work. There is a variety of bloodlines in this offering as well. Each contributor has culled their bull pen hard, so you can be assured that you are only being offered our very best. In our 2013 sale, we offered a set of open replacement heifers for the first time. We were very pleased with how well these heifers were accepted and they literally sold across Canada and into the US as well. We are offering what we feel are a tremendous set of replacement females again this year and many of them would normally be held back to add to our own herds. We have dug deep to come up with the best possible set of females we could to try to make the female portion of our sale the best we could offer. You can be assured that we are selling replacement females that we would not normally offer if we were not committed to making this sale the highest quality we can. This year’s sale will again be broadcast live by Cattle in Motion at www.cattleinmotion.com. We hope you can come to our sale, but if you cannot, you can still watch the sale and bid from your home computer if you wish to do so. We will also have more informatoin regarding the sale offering on our websites. The ultrasound data on the bulls will be posted in early March. Short videos will also be posted so you can see more than just a still picture. And of course, each owner and our sale representatives would be very pleased to discuss any or all of the sale offering with you. It is oftentimes good to get another opinion but we will do our utmost to answer your questions and describe the cattle honestly. We will also try to assist our buyers in making transportation arrangements for their purchases. We have entered a new era in the beef industry. These are very exciting times with record prices being established nearly every week in the markets. Of course, there will be fluctuations up and down in these markets, but in general, the forecasts for the long term look very bright. We have all waited a long time to see this happen and it is long overdue. It has never been more important to produce the highest quality we can in our herds. This sale offering is the highest quality set of breeding animals we have offered to date and feel they offer genetics that will add value to calf crops, whether you be a commercial or purebred producer. We hope you can be with us on March 27th. Plan to come early for a complimentary lunch and visit with other cattle producers. Grant Alexander (for the Sun Country group)

Super Flag was an extremely popular sire and he was responsible for the Shorthorn breed regaining some lost popularity. Aussie Flag is exactly what we were hoping for when we mated Super Flag with Leah 55L. He is thick and soggy made. This is possibly one of the most significant breeding pieces that we have produced from Leah. He is a total outcross to many of today’s bloodlines and he deserves serious consideration. This is a natural born son of Six S Leah 55L. He was twin to a heifer, and together they weaned at 1335 lbs. Two sons of Leah have topped this sale in the past and a daughter was a top selling female in our fall female sale. A full brother and maternal brother also sell . His dam has been one of our most prolific donors and her embryos have sold to 8 countries. This guy has probably changed the most in our bull pen since weaning and we predict he will continue to get better and better with time. BW 65 lbs unassisted.

The only bull in the sale that combines two of the best sires that have been used here, namely Pioneer and Major Leroy. He is an ET calf from our very best Leroy daughter. A visitor from Australia called his dam one of the very best females they had seen in Canada. His grand dam is also a full sister to Timeline, and she comes from the Picture Perfect tribe. This bull is bred for the beef business. BW 90 lbs unassisted.

Here is a well balanced Timeline son that is from a young Matrix female, from the Marion Delight cow family that originated at Schrags in SD. This guy always gets noticed, as he has that great eye appeal. He is a bull that is hard to find many holes in, and his pedigee is stacked with genetics that ensure that he will be an improver. His dam is a moderate framed Leroy daughter that milks well, is trouble free and fertile. He has been described as being a Kenworth on a Volkswagon frame, which sums him up pretty well! BW 86 lbs unassisted.

HC Marksman 25Z sold in our 2014 Sun Country Sale to Moore Family Shorthorns, Jerseyville, IL. Not only was he used extensively in their herd, but he was shown at numerous shows in the US. Among his wins, he won his class at the NAILE in Louisville, and at the US National Shorthorn show in Denver. He is typical of the quality you will find in this sale.

We would like to thank the bull and heifer buyers in the 2013 Sun Country Shorthorn Sale... Every so often right from the first time you lay your eyes on a calf, you know they will have what it takes. The outright power that Kudo possesses will be hard to, if not impossible to find in any non-appendix Shorthorn bull this spring! He has a tremendous lower quarter, top, hip and rib, amazing depth of body, and a great set of feet and legs under him. To boot... he has the puppy dog disposition of both his parents. We have a ton of confidence in this guy. If it would work out, we would be willing to work with the new owner and take Kudo back out on the show road this fall. Reserve senior bull calf champion at CWA 2013 and member of first place Breeders herd. Retaining In-Herd semen interest. Co-owned with Mcbeth Shorthorns. BW 91lbs.

Rocky is amazingly wide toped, smooth shouldered, long as a train, and yet still soft in his make up. He was the anchor in our 1st place Breeders Herd, and 1st place progeny of Dam at CWA. Not only has this cow family performed in the show ring but they are now performing in the pasture. We were fortunate to get 22 full sib embryos in December so we are already looking forward to them in 2015!!! We are very proud of this bull and believe he will be a top young sire of the future. Another typical General 4U and the youngest bull in our sale offering. He has impressed us since Day 1 with his wide top, extremely thick and deep quarter, length of body and his overall performance. The 4U calves all have that “Red Meat” stamp that he puts into his offspring. Unfortunately due to a injury we no longer have him walking our pastures but will continue to use him as one of our main AI sires. This bull deserves some serious consideration on sale day!!! BW 105lbs

7A’s Dam is from one of our favorite and top producing cow families “HC Fairest Faye” They are moderate framed, excellent uddered and are very easy keeping. His dam’s maternal sister, ACC Fairest Faye 14Z, sired by Matrix, was the 2013 CWA Grand Champion female and we’re very pleased with the comments regarding how sound she was and how well she could walk. Our Hawkeye 22W daughters went into production in 2013 and their udders are second to none. With his lower birth weight and deep red color Aderly will be sure to grab your attention on sale day. EPDs are specific to each breed and cannot be compared across different breeds. Not only do they incorporate the performance of individual animals, but also the performance of all its relatives. EPDs indicate a probable variance above or below breed average for that trait for a given bull’s progeny. EPDs are the best tool available to use as a guide to the direction you want your herd to go. Birth Weight (BW) At the basic level, birth weight is nothing more than an indicator trait for calving ease, but the emphasis on birth weight can be overdone. Economically, over selecting for low birth weights can take us in the wrong direction; cattle still sell by the pound. Use BW EPD in conjunction with calving ease. Phenotypic traits like length of body, shoulder design, head shape, circumference of bone and even frame score play a significant role in determining birth weights and calving ease.

Weaning Weights (WW) Put simply, weaning weight is the ability of a bull’s calf to dry off, stagger to it’s feet, and grow like mad. Finding a sire with a strong WW that also excels in other economically relevant traits important to your breeding program is a key element to success. 2013 Shorthorn Breed Average EPDs BW

WW

YW

Yearling Weight (YW) This trait is economically important since it is more indicative of growth potential through market weights taken early in the animals life. Single trait selection for YW can lead to serious problems that can affect bottom line profit. Mature must be monitored when selecting a bull for performance via YW EPD. Cow maintenance costs, calving difficulty, and even breeding problems can result. YW EPDs can be very influential if you understand your environment conditions or if you are retaining ownership in your calves from birth to slaughter.

Milk A bull’s Milk EPD is determined by his daughter’s ability to wean heavier calves than her contemporaries. Just because a cow weans a heavier calf each year does not necessarily mean her Milk EPD should be the highest in the herd. The performance of her calf can also be attributed to the dam’s or sire’s growth genetics or a number of environmental factors. Milk EPDs can be too high for your environmental conditions especially in severe environmental conditions and can have a negative impact on rebreeding rates.

A maternal sister to 7A was one of our best heifers in this sale last year, and she was selected by Don Jack in Ontario as a foundation female for his new herd. We are cutting deep in our replacement pen this year, as we need to reduce our herd numbers some so some heifers that we would normally not sell are being offered. This is one of them. Her dam was shown successfully for two years by Jim Murray and family, and she was in the Champion run at the Royal Winter Fair and Agribition as a yearling and was Canadian Junior National Champion female. We have partnered with the Murray’s and with Blair Williamson on Millie and this is her first calf. This heifer can stand considerable competition in the show ring and she is going to make a tremendous brood cow! BW 85 lb unassisted.

Terms of Sale Bidding: Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. Bidding Disputes: The auctioneer will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final. Terms: The terms of the sale are cash, unless previous arrangements have been made with the owner. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. All settlements will be made with the clerks of the sale immediately following the conclusion of the sale and before any cattle will be released from the sale facility. Purchaser’s Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be fed, watered and cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable time. If leaving your bull in our care we strongly encourage you as the new owner to insure him. Insurance: A representative of a major insurance company will be present to care for insuring cattle. Certificate of Registry: A certificate of registry and transfer will be furnished for each animal. Announcements: Changes of information contained in this catalogue relating to the animals offered for sale will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence. Health: All cattle will be in excellent health. Breeder’s Guarantee: All animals sold are guaranteed breeders by the owner. Any animal that has not proven itself a breeder within six months after date of sale, if in healthy condition, may be returned to the seller at buyer’s expense. The seller reserves the privilege of trying for a period of six months to prove the animal a breeder. The seller at his option may either return the purchase price to the buyer or replace the animal with another of equal quality in full settlement of ALL claims. All complaints regarding breeding difficulties must be reported in writing by the buyer to the seller within the specified time above and any animal returned must be free from disease and in good health. Retained Interest: In the event that an owner wishes to reserve the right to collect semen from any bull in the sale, it will be announced prior to the sale and from the auction block as well. Semen will be collected at the buyer`s convenience and at the seller`s expense, and it will only be available for use in the seller`s herd. Liability: Neither owners, sale manager, clerks, nor anyone connected with the sale assumes any responsibility, legal or otherwise for damage of any kind. Contract: The above terms and conditions shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal sold.

Bull Warranty We guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bull, capable of servicing a reasonable number of cows. In the event that your bull is a non-satisfactory breeder, the seller will not, under any circumstances, be responsible for more than the original selling price of any bull sold in the sale. The consignors will not provide replacement or credit for any physical injury or mismanagement. Therefore, we stress the importance of insurance on your bull. An insurance agent will be available on sale day. We also realize that breeding season is also a very busy time on most farms. We would ask that you check your new bulls periodically, so that if there are problems, we can hear about them sooner rather than later. This is equally important for the bull buyer as well. If your bull is not breeding, or becomes injured, it is important to resolve the problem as soon as possible in the breeding season.
