Welcome to our eighth annual Sun Country Bull & Female Sale We would like to welcome you to our 8th annual sale. What an exciting time to be in the beef industry! After watching record calf prices being broken week after week, I don’t ever recall this much optimism in all sectors of the industry. The long range forecasts look bright and I think we can expect to enjoy good markets for some time into the future. We have all waited a long time to see this happen and it is certainly a long time overdue. It is never been more important to produce the highest quality product we can in our herds. We feel this is the highest quality set of breeding animals we have ever offered, and we think they offer genetics that will add value to your calf crop. Each year, Shorthorn genetics are being sought by more and more cattlemen to add the Shorthorn Advantage to their herds. This year’s sale offering is again brought to you by the Alexander, Anwender and Lamontagne families. Each of us has fed our own bulls and we have developed them to be athletic and sound. They represent a wide cross section of Shorthorn genetics that have been gathered around the world. We have again dug deep into our replacement heifers to come up with as strong a set of heifers as we can for this sale. This is the third year we have offered heifers in this sale and we have been very pleased with how they have been accepted. They have sold across Canada and into the US as well. This year’s sale will again be broadcast live by Cattle in Motion at www.cattleinmotion.com . We hope you can attend our sale, but if you cannot, you can still watch the sale and bid from your home computer if you wish to do so. More information regarding the sale offering will be posted on our websites. Short videos will be posted so you can see more than just a still picture. Ultrasound data will be provided on many of the bulls as well. And of course, each consignor and our sale representatives would be very pleased to discuss any of the sale offering with you. We will do our best to describe the cattle as honestly as we can. We will also try to assist our buyers in making transportation arrangements for their purchases. Our sale is earlier this year, due to the calendar pushing us out of our previous sale date. Because of this, we are again offering to take our bulls and heifers back to our farms and keep them until shipping arrangements are made. We hope you can be with us on March 10th. Plan to come early for a complimentary lunch and visit with other cattle producers. Grant Alexander ( for the Sun Country group)
Sun Country Philosophy... • We develop our bulls for optimum growth … not maximum growth. The bulls in this sale will be athletic, sound and ready to work. Each contributor has culled their bulls on soundness and only the best are being offered. Each animal has been selected for this sale on it’s own merit and they all have to meet our expectations first. • We will provide useful information on the sale offering. Because our sale has moved earlier in March, all bulls born prior to January 1, 2014 will be semen evaluated and have passed the test by a licenced Veterinarian. Bulls born in 2014, will have a physical breeding soundness exam and will be deemed likely to pass a semen evaluation . All bulls will be semen tested prior to shipment. • We will be adding updated weights and other pertinent information on the sale offering on our websites prior to sale day. Please check this information at your convenience. • All buyers are encouraged to purchase insurance on the bulls in order to protect your investment. If the bulls are returning to our farms for a period of time before shipping can be arranged or until you want them, we would ask that they be insured. • We believe in customer service. We will try to make your bull and heifer buying experience as good as possible. We will, wherever possible, assist in arranging transportation of your purchases. • We will keep your purchases free of charge until April 15th, after which you will be charged for the cost of the feed consumed (unless previous arrangements have been made with the seller). All bulls and heifers returning to our farms MUST be insured. Please read our bull warranty and, if you have any questions, please ask any of the owners. An insurance agent will be available on sale day. • Every bull selling is guaranteed to be free of the TH and PHA defects. They have either been tested or verified free by pedigree. • Nobody knows these bulls and their backgrounds as well as the owners do. We would be pleased to answer any questions you have in a honest and no pressure manner. Once you have the information you need, can make the best decision on what bulls or heifers will work best for your herd. Page 3

After many hours of thought we have decided to offer All Gold in this sale. He was the top selling bull in the Midwest Spectacular Sale in Springfield, IL last spring. He has continued to develop into a most impressive herd sire that also has a great temperament. He has impressive performance! Not many yearling bulls come in from breeding 30 females, in better shape than when he went out. He actually gained over 200 pounds in the breeding pasture. He weighed 2158 on his second birthday. A true performance sire. He offers a unique set of genetics as he is sired by the Australian Sprys All Gold who is siring great calves in countries around the world. His dam is one of the most impressive young females in the Cagwin herd. Our cow herd numbers are down and we are also planning to AI breed to some new Australian genetics we have purchased. It makes more sense to offer him as he is young and has lots of years of breeding left. He is far too good just to stay here as a clean up herd bull. We have semen drawn for in herd use only and we will continue to use him in this way. BW 94 lbs unassisted

I consider 84A to be one of the best sons of Timeline we have raised. Being a July born calf, he was wintered on his mother, and weaned in early spring. He spent the summer on grass and had no additional feed until October. I think he has been growth very naturally. He has beautiful muscle pattern and is very sound made His dam has been a tremendous producer since coming here from Sullivan Farms in Iowa. Every calf she had produced has been born unassisted and has been one of our best. We expect 84A will be homozygous polled just like his sire. If we had not used Timeline for several years and have two sons in our herd bull line-up, we would most likely be using Accent ourselves.

His dam combines Bar Code and Mist’s Return in her pedigree and with Buster 14K as his sire, he should be a calving ease sire. The “new” North American Shorthorn Genetic Evaluation is now finally completed and you will notice a difference between today’s EPDs and those in past years. These EPDs were completed by the American Simmental Association as part of their multi- breed genetic evaluation. These EPDS now have the same “base” as Simmental, Red Angus, Gelbvieh and a growing number of other breeds. As a result, our EPDs can now be compared with these breeds. This means that bull and female buyers can search for genetics from multiple breeds and compare the performance profiles against one another.
Birth Weight (BW)
At the basic level, birth weight is nothing more than an indicator trait for calving ease, but the emphasis on birth weight can be overdone. Economically, over selecting for low birth weights can take us in the wrong direction; cattle still sell by the pound. Use BW EPD in conjunction with calving ease. Phenotypic traits like length of body, shoulder design, head shape, circumference of bone and even frame score play a significant role in determining birth weights and calving ease.
Weaning Weights (WW)
Put simply, weaning weight is the ability of a bull’s calf to dry off, stagger to its feet, and grow like mad. Finding a sire with a strong WW that also excels in other economically relevant traits important to your breeding program is a key element to success.

Yearling Weight (YW)
This trait is economically important since it is more indicative of growth potential through market weights taken early in the animals life. Single trait selection for YW can lead to serious problems that can affect bottom line profit. Mature must be monitored when selecting a bull for performance via YW EPD. Cow maintenance costs, calving difficulty, and even breeding problems can result. YW EPDs can be very influential if you understand your environment conditions or if you are retaining ownership in your calves from birth to slaughter.
A bull’s Milk EPD is determined by his daughter’s ability to wean heavier calves than her contemporaries. Just because a cow weans a heavier calf each year does not necessarily mean her Milk EPD should be the highest in the herd. The performance of her calf can also be attributed to the dam’s or sire’s growth genetics or a number of environmental factors. Milk EPDs can be too high for your environmental conditions especially in severe environmental conditions and can have a negative impact on rebreeding rates.

Her dam came here as a top selling bred heifer in the 2012 Shadybrook sale in Quebec. She has already been flushed for Martyn Moore in England. 27B has been a “looker” since birth and we predict she will only get better with a little more age.

I could write a few chapters about her dam Six S Leah 55L, who is the most prolific cow we have ever owned. She has progeny in 7 countries now. We have several daughters of Leah 55L in our herd, so have decided to share one. This is one of the best!

We have many Sparkle females in our herd, including 4 full sisters to 406B. She is a full sister to two of our best donor females. Her dam is still in our herd at 15 years of age and will be flushed again this spring. She was raised in our co-operator herd in Minnesota, and at the time of printing, we are awaiting the DNA parentage test to be completed. We will post her registration number on our website as soon as this is completed. The Sparkles are some of the easiest fleshing females we have ever owned, and this heifer will be the same.

When he topped our first Sun Country Bull Sale, we retained an interest in him, as he was the highest indexing bull we have ever raised for ADG and WPDA and he still is. Horseshoe Creek - Touchdown was sold when he was 2 ½ months of age and when we saw how he had developed we purchased him back after he was named the 2009 Canadian National Champion Bull. This has certainly been one of the best decisions we have made as we are very pleased with his calves. He sires calves that are born easily, have moderate frame and thickness. His sons were very popular in our 2014 sale, and his sons in this year’s sale are again some of our very best! His first daughters are in production now and they are maternal machines with great udders.

How Much Can you Afford to Pay for a Better Bull? Increase in pounds per calf from a top performance bull X Number of cows bred to him each year X Number of years to keep the bull X Expected selling price of calves = Additional dollars you can pay for a better bull Example: A bull that will add an additional 30 lbs to the weaning weight of each of his calves mated to 25 cows per year for 4 years and if you sell the calves at $2.50/ lb 30X 25 = 750 lbs x 4 years=3000 additional lbs X $2.50/ lb = $7500.00 This bull is worth $7500 more than the average bull who will keep your weaning weights the same. Take this formula and put in your own figures. Source: Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association

Terms of Sale Bidding: Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. Bidding Disputes: The auctioneer will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final. Terms: The terms of the sale are cash, unless previous arrangements have been made with the owner. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. All settlements will be made with the clerks of the sale immediately following the conclusion of the sale and before any cattle will be released from the sale facility. Purchaser’s Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be fed, watered and cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable time. If leaving your bull in our care we strongly encourage you as the new owner to insure him. Insurance: A representative of a major insurance company will be present to care for insuring cattle. Certificate of Registry: A certificate of registry and transfer will be furnished for each animal. Announcements: Changes of information contained in this catalogue relating to the animals offered for sale will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence. Health: All cattle will be in excellent health. Breeder’s Guarantee: All animals sold are guaranteed breeders by the owner. Any animal that has not proven itself a breeder within six months after date of sale, if in healthy condition, may be returned to the seller at buyer’s expense. The seller reserves the privilege of trying for a period of six months to prove the animal a breeder. The seller at his option may either return the purchase price to the buyer or replace the animal with another of equal quality in full settlement of ALL claims. All complaints regarding breeding difficulties must be reported in writing by the buyer to the seller within the specified time above and any animal returned must be free from disease and in good health. Retained Interest: In the event that an owner wishes to reserve the right to collect semen from any bull in the sale, it will be announced prior to the sale and from the auction block as well. Semen will be collected at the buyer`s convenience and at the seller`s expense, and it will only be available for use in the seller`s herd. Liability: Neither owners, sale manager, clerks, nor anyone connected with the sale assumes any responsibility, legal or otherwise for damage of any kind. Contract: The above terms and conditions shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal sold.
Bull Warranty We guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bull, capable of servicing a reasonable number of cows. In the event that your bull is a non-satisfactory breeder, the seller will not, under any circumstances, be responsible for more than the original selling price of any bull sold in the sale. The consignors will not provide replacement or credit for any physical injury or mismanagement. Therefore, we stress the importance of insurance on your bull. An insurance agent will be available on sale day. We also realize that breeding season is also a very busy time on most farms. We would ask that you check your new bulls periodically, so that if there are problems, we can hear about them sooner rather than later. This is equally important for the bull buyer as well. If your bull is not breeding, or becomes injured, it is important to resolve the problem as soon as possible in the breeding season.
