March 8, 2016

WELCOME TO OUR NINTH ANNUAL SUN COUNTRY BULL & FEMALE SALE We would like to welcome you to our 9th annual sale. The beef business has been a bit of a wild ride the past couple years. After weeks and weeks of record breaking prices, a market adjustment started to show up early last fall. The sky did not fall and quite frankly, we are still see markets that we did not see as ever being possible a few short years ago. The long range forecasts are still very bright and the optimism in the industry is still very high. Every indicator we have suggests a strong industry into the forseeable future. It is even more important today to produce the highest quality product we can. Our sale offering this year is the strongest set of Shorthorn genetics we have ever offered. It is great to see more and more Shorthorn genetics being used in beef herds across Canada and the US. This year’s offering is again brought to you by the Alexander, Lamontagne and Anwender families. Each of us has fed our own bulls and they have been developed to be athletic and sound. They represent some of the best Shorthorn genetics we have been able to gather from around the world. We have also dug deep into our replacement heifers and many that would not normally be on offer, have been included to make this sale as strong as we can make it. We are pleased with how well our heifers have been accepted since we added them to this sale. This year’s sale will be broadcast live by DV Auctions at www.dvauctions.com. Of course, it is always best if you can attend our sale in person, but if you cannot, you can still watch and bid from your computer at home. We will be adding additional information about our sale offerings on our websites. Short videos will be available so you can see more than just a still picture. Most of the pictures you see in this catalog were taken in mid January, so the videos will show a more “ up to date” picture of how they have developed since then. Our sale is earlier again this year, so we are once again offering to take our bulls and heifers back to our farms and keep them until shipping arrangements are made. We hope you can be with us on March 8th. Plan to come early for a complimentary lunch and visit with other cattle producers. Grant Alexander ( for the Sun Country group)

SUN COUNTRY PHILOSOPHY... • We develop our bulls for optimum growth … not maximum growth. The bulls in this sale will be athletic, sound and ready to work. Each contributor has culled their bulls on soundness and only the best are being offered. Each animal has been selected for this sale on it’s own merit and they all have to meet our expectations first. • We will provide useful information on the sale offering. Because our sale has moved earlier in March, all bulls born prior to January 1,2015 will be semen evaluated and have passed the test by a licenced Vetrinarian. Bulls born in 2015, will have a physical breeding soundness exam and will be deemed likely to pass a semen evaluation . All bulls will be semen tested prior to shipment. • All buyers are encouraged to purchase insurance on the bulls in order to protect your investment. If the bulls are returning to our farms for a period of time before shipping can be arranged or until you want them, we would ask that they be insured. • We believe in customer service. We will try to make your bull and heifer buying experience as good as possible. We will, wherever possible, assist in arranging transportation of your purchases. • We will keep your purchases free of charge until April 15th, after which you will be charged for the cost of the feed consumed (unless previous arrangements have been made with the seller). All bulls and heifers returning to our farms MUST be insured. Please read our bull warranty and, if you have any questions, please ask any of the owners. An insurance agent will be available on sale day. • Every bull selling is guaranteed to be free of the TH and PHA defects. They have either been tested or verified free by pedigree. • Nobody knows these bulls and their backgrounds as well as the owners do. We would be pleased to answer any questions you have in a honest and no pressure manner. Once you have the information you need, can make the best decision on what bulls or heifers will work best for your herd.

A long bodied two year old bull with lots of growth. He is an ET son of Saskvalley Lucky Eddy 13X, who topped the Agribition sale in 1988. We lost Eddy early in 1989, but fortunately we had collected a small amount of semen on him. Boardwalk was used on a set of cows as a yearling and he is ready to go to work. BW: 102 lbs

An own son of the cow maker himself, Muridale Buster 14K! He is considered a breed legend for his ability to sire superior females and great breeding bulls. We used Bedrock on our replacement heifers last summer and he did a great job. Since we are selling almost all our heifers this year, we are offering him and will retain some semen for in herd use only. This is serious herd bull time! BW: 78 lbs

5C is a lower birth weight bull that should be a candidate for use on both heifers and cows. He is sired by the Leader 6th bull that bred so well at Ralph Larson’s in Montana before going to work at Bowman Superior Genetics in Indiana. His dam has had several sons in this sale. This guy is sound structured and has easy fleshing ability coming from both sides of his pedigree. BW: 82 lbs

This is the youngest Free Spirit son in the sale, but another bull with lots of potential. Sound structured and a beautiful roan color. He will become more valuable with a bit more time, but we felt he should come to this sale because he has so much potential. Take a serious look at this guy! BW: 90 lbs

Cruiser is younger than what we normally offer for sale, but he has so much potential that we felt someone may want to breed a few head to him and have a great herd sire to turn out with a larger group of females next year. He is sired by the 2015 Canadian National Champion, Shadybrook Hot Shot 88A and his dam was the high selling bred heifer in the 2014 Shadybrook sale at $10,000. This youngster could sire some pretty fancy club calves. He is thick, clean made and moderate framed along with great hair. BW: 80 lbs

HC CHERRY MIST 79S X-[CAN]*15616

205C is an exceptionally big bodied, easy fleshing son of the National Champion HC FL Touchdown 123T that came unassisted from a Rockstar first calf heifer who did a tremendous job on this calf. Powerful maternal genetics back 205C and he is destined to become a major league herdsire. BW: 81 lbs

C R E E K F A R M S L T D

The “new” North American Shorthorn Genetic Evaluation is now finally completed and you will notice a difference between today’s EPDs and those in past years. These EPDs were completed by the American Simmental Association as part of their multi- breed genetic evaluation. These EPDS now have the same “base” as Simmental, Red Angus, Gelbvieh and a growing number of other breeds. As a result, our EPDs can now be compared with these breeds. This means that bull and female buyers can search for genetics from multiple breeds and compare the performance profiles against one another.

Birth Weight (BW)

At the basic level, birth weight is nothing more than an indicator trait for calving ease, but the emphasis on birth weight can be overdone. Economically, over selecting for low birth weights can take us in the wrong direction; cattle still sell by the pound. Use BW EPD in conjunction with calving ease. Phenotypic traits like length of body, shoulder design, head shape, circumference of bone and even frame score play a significant role in determining birth weights and calving ease.

Milk

Weaning Weights (WW)

Put simply, weaning weight is the ability of a bull’s calf to dry off, stagger to its feet, and grow like mad. Finding a sire with a strong WW that also excels in other economically relevant traits important to your breeding program is a key element to success.

Yearling Weight (YW)

This trait is economically important since it is more indicative of growth potential through market weights taken early in the animals life. Single trait selection for YW can lead to serious problems that can affect bottom line profit. Mature must be monitored when selecting a bull for performance via YW EPD. Cow maintenance costs, calving difficulty, and even breeding problems can result. YW EPDs can be very influential if you understand your environment conditions or if you are retaining ownership in your calves from birth to slaughter.

A bull’s Milk EPD is determined by his daughter’s ability to wean heavier calves than her contemporaries. Just because a cow weans a heavier calf each year does not necessarily mean her Milk EPD should be the highest in the herd. The performance of her calf can also be attributed to the dam’s or sire’s growth genetics or a number of environmental factors. Milk EPDs can be too high for your environmental conditions especially in severe environmental conditions and can have a negative impact on rebreeding rates.

Minnie was in our show herd last fall. We purchased her dam from Waukaru, Inc and she came bred to JSF Hot Wire 70A, who was the high selling bull in North America in 2014. Not only is her dam from the famed Minnie cow family, but she is also the dam of Waukaru Gridmaster who is a herd sire at Waukaru. This heifer will develop into an excellent brood cow. BW: 82 lbs

This is the thickest and deepest sided heifer with a moderate frame that we have ever produced. She is exactly what we thought Free Spirit would produce on cows like her dam. The dam of 14C has had a great track record and she is also the dam of HC Bazinga 13B who we are using in our herd. Make sure you check this heifer out. You will drive a pile of miles to find another one like her! BW: 98 lbs

She has lots of shape and femininity and comes from a very good cow that is backed by the Jealousy Par cow family. The Acheson’s love their Gus females. She will be a very sound investment! Every heifer that is retained at weaning time is one that we would/should be keeping ourselves… to make a good cow out of… and 39C is no exception! We only have 3 Ruffian daughters here now and they always have calves at the top end of the group. BW: 107 lbs

A Her dam is also a maternal sister to ACC General 4U and sired by Matrix. This heifer exemplifies what we strive for in our Shorthorn N herd; maternal power, excellent udders and the three H’s – Hair, Hip and Hindquarter. BW: 98 lbs W E N D E R C A T T L E C O M P A N Y

Every cattleman has their thought of the perfect cross for themselves. This heifer speaks volumes of ours. Her perfect uddered dam is sired by Me ‘N My Hawkeye. Her sire is a walking bull of ours, LFE Strong Arm sired by 3D Full Throttle, whom we purchased out of the feature pen at the 2014 Lewis Farms Bull Sale. Sadie had planned on taking her on the road with her 4-H heifer, but with the amount of interest we’ve had in our blue critters, we have decided to offer her for sale. Terms of Sale Bidding: Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. Bidding Disputes: The auctioneer will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final. Terms: The terms of the sale are cash, unless previous arrangements have been made with the owner. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. All settlements will be made with the clerks of the sale immediately following the conclusion of the sale and before any cattle will be released from the sale facility. Purchaser’s Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be fed, watered and cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable time. If leaving your bull in our care we strongly encourage you as the new owner to insure him. Insurance: A representative of a major insurance company will be present to care for insuring cattle. Certificate of Registry: A certificate of registry and transfer will be furnished for each animal. Announcements: Changes of information contained in this catalogue relating to the animals offered for sale will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence. Health: All cattle will be in excellent health. Breeder’s Guarantee: All animals sold are guaranteed breeders by the owner. Any animal that has not proven itself a breeder within six months after date of sale, if in healthy condition, may be returned to the seller at buyer’s expense. The seller reserves the privilege of trying for a period of six months to prove the animal a breeder. The seller at his option may either return the purchase price to the buyer or replace the animal with another of equal quality in full settlement of ALL claims. All complaints regarding breeding difficulties must be reported in writing by the buyer to the seller within the specified time above and any animal returned must be free from disease and in good health. Retained Interest: In the event that an owner wishes to reserve the right to collect semen from any bull in the sale, it will be announced prior to the sale and from the auction block as well. Semen will be collected at the buyer`s convenience and at the seller`s expense, and it will only be available for use in the seller`s herd. Liability: Neither owners, sale manager, clerks, nor anyone connected with the sale assumes any responsibility, legal or otherwise for damage of any kind. Contract: The above terms and conditions shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal sold.

Bull Warranty We guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bull, capable of servicing a reasonable number of cows. In the event that your bull is a non-satisfactory breeder, the seller will not, under any circumstances, be responsible for more than the original selling price of any bull sold in the sale. The consignors will not provide replacement or credit for any physical injury or mismanagement. Therefore, we stress the importance of insurance on your bull. An insurance agent will be available on sale day. We also realize that breeding season is also a very busy time on most farms. We would ask that you check your new bulls periodically, so that if there are problems, we can hear about them sooner rather than later. This is equally important for the bull buyer as well. If your bull is not breeding, or becomes injured, it is important to resolve the problem as soon as possible in the breeding season.

Lot 2

Lot 38 How Much Can you Afford to Pay for a Better Bull? Increase in pounds per calf from a top performance bull X Number of cows bred to him each year X Number of years to keep the bull X Expected selling price of calves = Additional dollars you can pay for a better bull Example: A bull that will add an additional 30 lbs to the weaning weight of each of his calves mated to 25 cows per year for 4 years and if you sell the calves at $2.50/ lb 30X 25 = 750 lbs x 4 years=3000 additional lbs X $2.50/ lb = $7500.00 This bull is worth $7500 more than the average bull who will keep your weaning weights the same. Take this formula and put in your own figures. Source: Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association
