Our beloved Jenny Smith has passed away. Founder and editor of HORSE TRADING, she accomplished what, at the time, seemed an insurmountable task… Yet 21 years and a spectacular 239 issues later (with not a single issue missed), it is clear that everything Jenny believed in and everything that she gave is inextricably woven into the fabric of South Africa’s equine industry.

Her tenacity and unfailing commitment saw her developing HORSE TRADING from a simplistic broadsheet that was stapled together, to the polished industry staple it is today. In light of Jenny’s passing, we have decided to give the industry and everyone who knew and loved our founder so greatly a moment to mourn. Therefore, we have only published this mini-mag as the July issue. This edition marks the loss of a legend, but it also points to that legend’s legacy. To our beloved Jenny Smith, for all that you have done, we are forever indebted…
Last dates for ad publication are the 15th of every month. WE ACCEPT ADS ALL DAY EVERY DAY!!! Ads will go onto the website & appear in the first available edition.

HORSE TRADING’s Way Forward… In this extremely difficult time, we saw it fit to rethink our approach to HORSE TRADING magazine. How can we best honour Jenny’s legacy? How can we demonstrate our commitment to again prioritising you, our valued readers and advertisers, after what has proven to be a trailing time? These are some of the questions the team at HORSE TRADING are hoping to answer with the relaunch of the industry’s favourite and oldest publication. Throughout the pages of this mini-mag, you will be treated to a glimpse of the all new HORSE TRADING. As of the August edition, you can expect the magazine to show a new lust for life and to keep you wanting more. Except for revamping the magazine, we are also redesigning the HORSE TRADING website and we are even in the process of developing a nifty app for your mobile browsing. We will be including more interesting articles and are placing a greater emphasis on our Young Equestrian Stars section that features the cutest, sweetest and most promising young SA talent and also offers fun facts and activities to keep the kiddies entertained on the way to the stables. As of the August edition, you will be given a say in our Letters to the Editor section, where you can rant and rave, ask for advice or even make suggestions regarding HORSE TRADING magazine. Of course, our dream of doing justice to Jenny’s lifelong love, HORSE TRADING, and honouring her legacy can only be realised through your understanding and support. You have always been the wind beneath our wings and we ask for your continued understanding, support and involvement as we trot on this new, unmapped, path. To you, our valued readers and advertisers, we are eager to start this new chapter with you…

Banish Winter Health Worries With winter in full swing, it’s great to re-evaluate your approach to horse care to ensure that your much-loved four-legged friend not only stays in tip-top condition, but is also optimally healthy and happy during the gloomy cold days still ahead. All too regularly you hear of horses sustaining injuries over the cold and dry months of May to early September. In dryer regions like Gauteng, horses often suffer joint injuries as the ground becomes more compact and hard. In areas prone to frost, like northern Natal, injuries related to slipping and sliding are common as horses loose grip and balance while roaming. To avoid these injuries associated with winter time and look after your horse well, HORSE TRADING have put together a couple of pointers to bear in mind.
NUTRITITON Whether it’s winter or summer time, nutrition remains a vital component in your horse’s overall health. That said, the harsh conditions of winter combined with the fact that horses are less inclined to eat and drink well over the season, can cause horses discomfort. To counteract this, all you have to do is pay extra close attention to your feeding habits and your horse’s behaviour. For example, some horses do not like to drink cold water during winter. As a result, these horses consume less water than normal which puts strain on their bodies. Especially if you take into account the fact that drinking water helps horses maintain a comfortable body temperature and helps prevent gut impaction. To counteract this, experts advise that you offer your horse lukewarm water if at all possible. Recent studies have found that horses are 40% more keen on drinking healthy amounts of water this way. To keep the ice at bay, you can also insolate your horse’s water buckets. A cheap way to do this is to place old car tyres around the buckets. Alternatively, invest in insolated bucket holders. Another tip you can use to boost your steed’s hydration levels is to mix water into his or her feed. In other words, add some lukewarm water into the pellets and mix until you have created a mash. This should be an irresistible treat leaving your horse healthy and satisfied.
6
Besides relying on water to help maintain body temperature, food also plays a significant role in keeping your horse warm. In fact, during the winter months as much as 80% of your horse’s feed intake is used to regulate body temperature. Think of your horse’s digestive system as an internal furnace and when you feed him or her you are stoking this furnace. As a result of the way in which a horse’s body uses food to create heat, horses need to be fed more during the winter months. It is therefore a good idea to chat to your veterinarian about the best feed and frequency for your horse this winter. As horses mature, they need different amounts of food as well as a different combination of nutrients. Young stock and pregnant mares, for example, will require a steady adjustment and increase in feed during the winter. Adding concentrates to horses’ diets is a popular way of managing horses’ nutrition during cold spells. This sustains the horse’s micronutrient levels, making sure that the horse not only has enough food (quantity) but that the food ingested also offers superb nutrition (quality). Again, talking to your veterinarian will help you establish which feed product to buy and how much of it to feed your horse.
MOVEMENT Some owners choose to let their horses recover from a busy season during the winter months. This means

affording them time to relax and revitalise rather than pushing their usual training regiments. That said, it’s always a good idea to give your horse sufficient space and leeway to move freely and get in enough exercise. After all, exercise forms a crucial component of your steed’s health. Continue riding your horse frequently. Not only does it promote natural hardiness, but it helps keep your horse fit and stimulated and improves blood circulation. It is, however, important to bear a couple of safety tips in mind when training in winter. Like making sure that you tack up in a safe spot, where there is no frost or mud on the surface that may cause your horse to slip. Other tips for adequately preparing your horse for the ride include giving it a warm bit rather than a cold one. This is a simple trick and just involves running some hot water over the bit or breathing onto it a number of times. Whilst not vital to the horse’s health, it’s a great way to get your horse more comfortable. Also remember to thoroughly groom your horse beforehand. In conjunction with giving your horse adequate time to warm up, grooming your horse supplies heat and stimulation to its muscles. This minimises muscle injuries as a result of cold muscles and is the perfect way to give your horse that little extra TLC.
this knowledge it will be much easier for you to notice differences in your horse’s behaviour and/or health and identify when it is necessary to call in an expert or adjust your horse’s current care regime. Two categories of conditions that are more common in the winter months are Gastrointestinal conditions such as ulcers, colic and diarrhea as well as Musculoskeletal conditions like degenerative joint disease, myopathies and tendinitis. Controlling these conditions can be as simple as spotting them in advance and increasing ventilation in the stable, adjusting turnout time and quickly seeking medical intervention if symptoms do appear. Lastly, looking after yourself and your own health is as important as heeding your horse’. You are the one who is most in sync with your steed, and therefore you will be the one who will be best equipped to look after and love your animal. If symptoms or strange behaviour do occur, you are likely the one to notice it first and gauge the severity of the problem. If, however, you are sick yourself, spending time with your horse and giving it the TLC it deserves will be less easy. So, this winter, treat both your horse and your own health as critically significant and your winter is bound to be worry-free.
Once you are finished with the day’s riding, make sure to cool down your horse properly. Double check that your horse is dry. If this is not the case, roughing your horse’s hair will help it dry faster. Once dry, brush or curry your horse so that the hairs are well separated. This will help keep your horse warm during the night. If you decide to cover your horse with a blanket, choose the blanket that breathes so that any remaining water vapour can escape.
HEALTH For many horses, the winter cold brings with it a host of health impediments such as respiration problems and impaction colic. The most important thing that you can do for your beloved four-legged friend is be aware of the possible problems and how best to circumvent them. With

“It is with great sadness and regret that we bid dearest Jenny farewell. After 20 years together in the equestrian industry, we had not only developed a mutually beneficial relationship that withstood the ebbs and flows of the times, but we also became good friends. It is difficult to describe the void that now exists. Words can never be enough… Jenny will be greatly missed”

Oracle House-Horse Predicts Soccer World Cup Results
Images: http://blogs.wsj.com
In December 2013 Stephanie Arndt, a medical doctor from Germany, brought her Arabian horse, Nasar, inside her house in an attempt to shelter him from the blistering hurricane that was taking place in north Germany. Now, while still living in doors with his owner, Nasar is a Soccer World Cup fan and predicts which team takes the cup. After comfortably cohabitating with Stephanie for over eight months, Nasar – currently three years old – has grown quite fond of watching the “beautiful game” on the television. He has become such a fan that, taking after Paul the octopus from the 2010 games, he has started predicting the outcome of soccer games.
www.horsetrading.co.za
He does this by kicking a large inflated ball into the toy goalpost with the flag of the team that he predicts will win. It seems, however, that Nasar recently struggled a bit while deciding which team would triumph between Germany and the USA. He wrongfully predicted that the USA would take the game by kicking the ball into the goalpost adorning the American flag. In that match, Germany ended up victorious... Nevertheless, Stephanie enjoys Nasar leisurely roaming the house, looking for snacks and taking naps. She doesn’t plan on restricting his movement any time soon.
