Jenny’s Jabber In loving memory of our founder, without whom the African equestrian industry would be so much poorer, we have introduced this section to the magazine. Here you can expect to find a bunch of useful hints, the occasional joke, book and blog reviews and much more. In the middle of January this year, a new record was set when a colt at the Cape Premier Yearling at the Cape Town International Convention Centre sold to Wehann Smith for R5.2 million. This got us thinking about the most expensive horses in the world. After doing some homework, we were as stunned as you are about to be…

A list of the 11 most expensive horses of all time: 11 – Sold for $9.2 million, Plavius is owned by the Vice President of the United Arab Emirates. Sadly, Plavius only raked in a low $41,572 in winnings so far… 10 – Jalil from Kentucky sold to Godolphin Racing in 2006 for $9.7 million. Performing a lot better than Plavius, Jalil has won $327,324 in his career. 9 – For a horse that never even ended up on the race track, Snaafi Dancer sure did sell for loads of cash… A substantial $10.2 million to be precise. 8 – Having earned a grand total of $1, 360 during his entire career, the Emir of Dubai must have been pretty disappointed in Meydan City. Particularly if you take into account the hefty $11.7 million that was paid for her. 7 – With a promising career and having earned a noteworthy $181,808 in a short space of time, Seattle Dancer sadly passed away from a heart attack before it could truly do justice to its Irish legacy. Setting its owner back $13.1 million. 6 – As the most expensive show jumping horse ever sold, Palloubet d’Hallong was sold to the Dutch Olympic gold champion, Jan Tops, for an astonishing $15 million. 5 – Green Monkey sure did remain true to its name when it sold for loads of green notes… $16 million smackaroos, to be exact. Pitty then that he only collected $10,440 in winnings during his career… 4 – Tortilas, the most expensive dressage horse ever sold, set its owner back a whopping $21 million. As the only horse to have scored above 90 in a competition and the holder of several other records, Tortilas

performed much better than his predecessors on this list. 3 – Then there’s Shareef Dancer… Sold for $40 million to the Emir of Dubai, Shareef had a relatively successful racing career, whereafter he earned his keeper additional pocket money as a prime stud horse. 2 – Bought for an estimated $70 million, Fusaichi Pegasus was first a successful racehorse with a total winnings of just under $2 million. With his stud set at $7 000 a pop, Fusaichi has continued to offer his owner a small return on investment, even after retiring from racing. 1 – And lastly, but by no means the least, remember that the most expensive horse is a free one…

hey say that every horse deserves to be loved by a little girl at least once in its life… Judging by these beautiful pictures of our March Young Equestrian Star diva-duo, the Coetzee girls are doing a great job at exactly that.

At the tender aged of nine, Abigail Coetzee is already being hailed as quite the talented young rider by her teachers at the Goldfields Riding Club in Riebeeckstad, Welkom. Abigail and Tempo, Abigail’s much-loved four-legged friend, are a great team that keeps improving with the passing of every week. Having witnessed her big sister’s passion and commitment, Demi-Lee Coetzee (aged four) has also taken up riding. Light as a feather, Demi-Lee blissfully bounces on her buddy Bronte’s back. Together, these two rosy sisters share a special spirit, spending more time in the stables than just about anywhere else… Here at HORSE TRADING, we particularly adore this section of the magazine. Meet the world’s most beautiful and rare horse breeds

regular feature in the magazine, the ‘Getting to Know Your Neigh-bours’ section is something you have come to expect in HORSE TRADING. Covering one equestrian breed found in South Africa every month, you will have spotted breeds like the Shire, the Paint and the Andalusian horse in this section.

There are so many noteworthy equestrian breeds that are not found in South Africa, however. So we compiled a list of the world’s most beautiful and rare horse breeds – for your ogling pleasure…

Four – The Sorraia Mustang

Standing between 14.1 and 14.3 hands tall, the Sorraia breed are known for their primitive features. They are normally a dun or grullo colour and many members of the Sorraia family sport a striking black dorsal stripe as well as black-tipped ears. To see this rare and magnificent breed live, one would likely have to travel to Portugal. In the Iberian peninsula, near the Sorraia River basin, is where they can be found. Three – The Friesian-Gypsy Vanner Crossbreed This draught horse breed, developed by the native Romanichal people in the British Isles, is easily recognised by its abundant leg featuring. While it is most commonly found with a striking black and white pie-balt coat, it can also appear in a variety of other colours. Since they are mostly traded and shown in England today, you may have to travel all the way to the Appleby Horse Fair hosted in Cumbria to see these beauts. Two – Knabstrupper Literally charged with having “the Leopard complex”, the Knapstrupper breed have prominent spots similar to the Appaloosa breed. Born with a solid colour of either bay or chestnut, this distinctive animal quickly develops its distinguishable traits, making it easy for you to “spot” it from afar (poor pun intended). Seeing this spotted specimen for yourself could involve travelling to Denmark, which is where these horses that are often used in circuses originated back in 1812. One - The Golden Akhal Teke A national emblem in their native land of Turkmenistan, the Akhal Teke boast a super shiny coat akin to Palominos and Bushkins. Thought to be one of oldest horse breeds in the world, these Akhal Teke are extremely well adapted to severe climatic conditions. These “golden horses” (as is their common nickname) are also good at anything that requires speed, endurance and intelligence. With only 6 600 Akhal Teke’s scattered across the world, those of us who are not fortunate enough to travel to Turkmenistan may still catch a glimpse of this archaic breed on many of the common mail stamps from the area.

Basotho Pony History In 1653 the first horses were brought to South Africa by the Dutch East India Trading Company. While speculations are rife about which breed it was that this company introduced to the Cape, experts seem to agree that these first horses would have shared a strong Arabian gene. It quickly became known as the Cape Horse. Lesotho acquired some of these Cape Horses as spoils from the wars between the Zulus the settlers. The Basuto people allowed the interbreeding of Cape Horses and they quickly lost their height and nobility. This gave birth to the Basotho Pony that we know today.

In urban areas, they are also often relied on as fun riding horses.

As the former Director of Agriculture of Basutoland, RW Thornton, notes in his book ‘The Origin and History of the Basotho Pony’ (1936): “There is no doubt that the Basotho Pony, like the once famous Cape Horse, became a definite and well-established type due to its origins. Its conformation, character, paces, action and high powers of endurance were typical of its Eastern Ancestor. In the case of the Basotho Pony, certain characteristics became accentuated due to the nature of the country in which it was bred and the manner in which it was handled by its owners. Basutoland is the most mountainous and the coldest part of South Africa. The Basotho are fast and fearless riders, but may be described as poor horse masters: shelter and food other
