More moments. For more than 40 years, Hosparus Health has helped families Create More Moments with their loved ones. Now we intend to showcase those moments through our new website and marketing campaigns. A few months ago, we talked with literally hundreds of Hosparus Health families, physicians, patients, volunteers and leaders in our community to find out just what Hosparus Health meant to them. What we learned is that we are one of our community’s best kept secrets. People often equate “hospice” with “my time on earth is nearing its end” and “I must be dying if I need hospice care.” When in fact, those who elect to use our services often tell us “I wish I had just called you sooner,” or, “the help you’ve provided to my family is priceless,” “we had so much fun with Mom those last few months, the memories we’ve made will stay with us for generations.” And, “I didn’t know Hosparus Health provided palliative care and grief counseling,” “you mean, I can get help before we are ready for hospice?” It’s comments like these that lead us to create the new look and feel of Hosparus Health’s front door – our website. Dear Community Friends and Supporters, By the time you read this issue of Caring Connections, you’ll be gearing up for fall, thinking about back to school, looking forward to cooler weather and maybe even football season. Here at Hosparus Health, we are taking stock, looking back on an exceptional 2018 and moving ahead to plan for 2020. The 2018 Year in Review on page 11 certainly tells a story of a focused and engaged healthcare provider. We are proud that we served more patients than ever (8,449), including a record 152 children and over 1,500 Veterans. In 2019 we have continued to grow, serving about 5% more patients than this time last year. And, we are eternally grateful for the nearly 7,400 individuals, families, community members and public who tirelessly support our mission through personal donations of time, talents and treasures. This issue is jam packed with an exceptional event recap, stories of Autumn Leaf Society gifts, and Thrift Shoppe features. These events, gifts and sales from our Thrift Shoppes always translate into millions of dollars raised to support our mission. Your gifts are critically important to our continued growth. You see, hospice care is 100% covered by insurance, however, the reimbursement for the care we provide is not adequate to cover all the extras our families have come to expect from Hosparus Health.
For example, we cover the costs of counseling for anyone in our community, even if they never had a loved one in our service. Our Palliative Care program is the opposite of hospice in that it is not covered at all by insurance. We also must cover the cost of the children in our Kourageous Kids program. So, even with the 2019-2020 rates for insurance reimbursement remaining flat, we will continue to turn to you, our generous donors to support Hosparus Health so that we can continue providing our patients and families with everything they need and continue to be recognized as an employer of choice. I am thankful for each of you every day, because without you, we would simply not have the ability to continue to grow and serve those who need us most. Enjoy this issue of Caring Connections. Event You might think a penny doesn’t buy much these days, but all those coins together add up to make a big difference. And that’s exactly what happened at this year’s Pennies from Heaven event. We collected $4,195.65 coins and donations to benefit our patients and families from this popular Southern Indiana event. So far Pennies has raised a combined total of more than $150,000 for patients and families. THANK YOU to all who contributed and to our volunteers who came in to roll and count!
A Southern Tradition comes to Central Kentucky
Club Car Show continues to support Hosparus Health For more than 20 years, on the second Sunday in July, the River Cities Corvette Club has hosted its annual Open Car Show at Bachman Chevrolet on Bluegrass Parkway. For those who came out in support of this year’s event, it was a hot day – as is the case for most July days in Louisville. The event is one of the largest and best attended shows in the Louisville area, with awards for Top 100, Best of Class and other Specialty Awards. The winner of the Hosparus Health Award was Tom Schultz and his 1955 Lincoln. Tom and his family have first-hand experience with our care when his wife received Hosparus services a few years ago. This year’s event showcased 216 cars, trucks and motorcycles and raised more than $26,000 with all monies donated to Hosparus Health. Many thanks to club leaders Tony Gettelfinger and Dale Piper for putting on a great show.

Delish is the only word to describe the Shrimp Boil hosted in early spring by our Central Kentucky community. Preparations for the boil were handled by Bob Wade, who had help from volunteers to chop onions, garlic, potatoes and shuck corn to add to the huge pot of shrimp. Add some spicy jambalaya prepared by Charlie Thurman, and this historically southern tradition arrived in Elizabethtown. More than 100 guests networked and enjoyed wine and bourbon paired with all the shrimp they could eat, all while hanging out on the lawn of the Brown-Pusey House. Mitzi Silliman Golf Challenge It was a shot down the fairway at the 13th annual Mitzi Silliman Women’s Golf Challenge, an event to honor and remember former Hosparus Health board member Mitzi Silliman. Central Kentucky Tea Sparkles in Blue PRESENTED BY: It was all “Denim and Diamonds” at this extravagant Tea & Auction. The event included a table decorating contest and has been an Elizabethtown tradition for almost 30 years. Guests enjoyed savory and sweet bites, while more than 30 local celebrity waiters, including Hardin County Sheriff John Ward and Deputy Judge-Executive Daniel London, poured delicious tea for tips. (All to benefit Hosparus Health of course!) 450 attendees (our highest attendance for this event) raised $35,000 to help those who receive services in our Central Kentucky community. To show our appreciation to supporters, founders, donors, volunteers and staff, Hosparus Health hosted a performance at the Bunbury Theatre of Grace and Glorie, a play by Tom Ziegler, that centered around a 90-year old cancer patient and her hospice volunteer. Over 100 guests joined us for the play and to celebrate the presentation of two compassion awards: Rising Star of Compassion was given to Katie Rubin and William Etter. Katie and William first connected with Hosparus Health in November 2015 when their second son, Meyer, received services from Kourageous Kids before passing away in December of that year. Because of the loving care and support they received, they wanted to help other families. Through fundraisers over the past two years, they raised over $6,500. Lifetime Achievement of Compassion was given to Christy Brown. Mrs. Brown has been a faithful, annual supporter of Hosparus Health for many years, including a gift in honor her late husband, Owsley Brown II. Christy has been a beacon of leadership and compassion in the community. Her most recent philanthropy promotes responsible decision making “through the Lens of Health.” We are grateful for her continued support and passion for our organization and mission. Shopping For A Cause
W
e know it can be exciting to score a bargain, but knowing your purchase is also making a difference right in your backyard – now, that’s exhilarating! At the Hosparus Health Thrift Shoppes in Elizabethtown and Campbellsville, your next fabulous find means so much more than just a great deal. Many families who have been touched by our services want to give back in some way, but they may not want to work directly with patients. At our Thrift Shoppes, shoppers can get high-quality, gently used clothing and home goods at an affordable price, plus they can feel confident that the money they spend is going directly to families dealing with serious illness in their communities. If you prefer to purge your closets, attic or garage rather than add to your collection of “stuff,” our Shoppes are always accepting donations. Unlike for-profit secondhand stores, we don’t sell anything on consignment – every single item has been generously donated. We know that not everyone can afford to write a check or buy tickets to a fundraising event, so donating clothes, household accessories and furniture you no longer need is a great way to give back in a meaningful way. The Shoppes have raised over $1 million for patients and families in our hospice and palliative care programs since the first location opened in E-town in 1992. The success of that store prompted us to open a second location in Campbellsville in 2017, and today both are thriving. “We’re so grateful to both the Elizabethtown and Campbellsville communities for their tremendous support of our Thrift Shoppes over the years,” says Thrift Shoppe Manager Moira Taylor. “We hear all the time that you can get retail-quality items at bargain prices, and it’s an easy way to support a great cause and their community at the same time. I’m so proud that every dollar the Shoppes make goes directly to help patients and families who might not be able to afford our services otherwise.” If you don’t want to buy or donate items, there’s yet another way you can support patients and families through our Shoppes – by giving the gift of your time as a volunteer. The Hosparus Health Thrift Shoppes depend on about 100 volunteers to keep them running smoothly. They help with receiving, sorting and pricing donations; placing and straightening items on the sales floor; and assisting customers. “It’s like a family at the Hosparus Health Thrift Shoppes,” says Hosparus Health of Central Kentucky Volunteer Manager Annette Jones. “We have a wonderful group of volunteers. They enjoy keeping the Shoppes organized and putting a smile on customers’ faces when they come in. They are truly amazing, and we couldn’t do it without them!”

Yard Sales Offer Pop-Up Thrift Shopping in Southern Indiana
Musical Family Donates $25,000 During Hosparus Fest
While Hosparus Health doesn’t operate a thrift store in Louisville or Southern Indiana, we offer opportunities for folks in those areas to give back by donating or shopping at our indoor yard sales held at the Hosparus Health of Southern Indiana’s New Albany office in the spring and fall. Hundreds of gently used treasures are always up for grabs at deeply discounted prices, and all proceeds from these popular community events go to patient Care Bags and the Making Memories scrapbooking program for local patients and families. We like to think of the sales as kind of a pop-up thrift shop that happens twice a year, and the money we raise there, stays there! Just like at our Thrift Shoppes, we depend on dozens of volunteers to sort, organize and staff our yard sales. We could not do it without them! Each event is a major undertaking, raising about $5,000 for patients and families in need. This is a big deal, since many items sell for less than a dollar! If you’ve got clothing or household items you’d like to get rid of but can’t make the drive down to E-town or Campbellsville, pencil in a reminder to check the date for our next yard sale in September. erry Fowler says Hosparus Health of Central Kentucky (HCK) is very special to his family. He and his brothers have used our hospice services a number of times, and each time they have been extremely grateful for the care and support they received. That’s why Jerry’s brother, Frank Fowler, and his wife, Carol, decided to leave a generous bequest to HCK in Frank and Carol Fowler their wills. Both Frank and Carol were in hospice care before they passed away. This past April, Jerry presented their gift of $25,000 during the Hosparus Fest bluegrass music festival. Hosparus cared for Jerry’s wife for about 10 days before she died a few years ago. “She was not long in their care, but it was a big help to the family,” he says. “It made such a difference that she could get the care at home. We were very well pleased.” Jerry also felt compelled to personally give back by performing at the festival with his band, Fowler Boys & Friends. Other band members include his brothers, Bill and Mike Fowler; his niece, Dana Ryan; and friends, Bernie Barnes and Eldon Strange. Jerry adds that he plans to not only continue to support Hosparus Health with his music but once Frank and Carol’s estate is settled, HCK will receive an additional gift! We’d like to extend a huge thanks to the entire Fowler family for their generous support!
Another great event for the Hosparus Bluegrass Fest This is the eighth year that local bluegrass enthusiasts turned out for a weekend of music and fun to benefit Hosparus Health of Central Kentucky. Put on by Breckinridge Bluegrass Music Association (BBMA), this year’s music festival had a deeper meaning for the musicians of the Fowler Boys & Friends. Their long-time vocalist and guitarist, and family member Frank Fowler, passed away in September 2018 under the care of Hosparus Health (see the story above). The Hosparus Fest was held the weekend of April 11-12 at Rough River Lodge. The festival was filled with music, fellowship, as well as some auction items. Local businesses and individuals from Hardin, Grayson and Breckinridge counties offered their support by sponsoring the festival. The amount raised by the festival alone was $24,050 (highest raised amount since the start of the festival) and drew a crowd of 300 plus. Fowler Boys & Friends

ith all the horrors and scandals in the news these days, Ron Rubin had become a bit jaded and cynical. “I was losing faith in humanity,” he admits. After an overwhelmingly
positive experience with our hospice services, he says “Hosparus Health restored my faith in humankind. I didn’t know healthcare providers could be so selfless, caring, giving, comforting, patient and kind. They are doing God’s work on earth.” In February of last year, Ron’s 89-year-old mother, Edith S. Rubin, called and asked him to come over. She had been living on her own despite a variety of health issues, and he was shocked to see the condition she was in when he arrived at the house. She was very weak and in pain. After caring for her himself for 11 days, Ron hired a nursing service. But he says there were limits to what they could do. His mother was bedridden most of the time and not rebounding. In June 2018, her internist, Dr. Harry L. Renco, recommended that Ron call Hosparus Health right away and not wait until the last few weeks when her death was imminent. “I’m very grateful for that. He was a saint.” Ron now says he’s ashamed of the misconceptions he had about hospice care. “I thought it meant my mother was automatically condemned to die very quickly, and I thought it would be upsetting to her.” That couldn’t have been further from the truth, he says. “I didn’t realize the medical advice and care

Edith and Ron’s dad, Joseph Rubin, who passed away in 2010 they would provide. I didn’t realize the attentiveness, the gentleness, the kindness. There were so many ways in which I was unjustifiably prejudiced. I was surprised in every respect.” Edith’s nurse assured Ron that hospice did not mean his mother was on the verge of death. She told him that, yes, his mom was slowing down and was at the end of her life, but it was not about giving up. He says he quickly saw that “Hosparus Health focuses on comfort and improving the quality of whatever time is remaining.” “I was so impressed with how professional, how attentive, how kind, how empathic and sympathetic everyone was on the team,” Ron adds. His mother’s care team provided medical care and care coordination, and were instrumental in getting medications, equipment and supplies delivered. The team also provided invaluable spiritual and psychological support. “They were as comforting to me as they were to my mother,” he says. “I felt like they became members of the family for a while.” The team’s 24/7 availability was also priceless to him. “I didn’t want my mother to suffer, but I didn’t want to take her to the emergency room.”

she would, and believes that’s partly because of the care she received. “If anything, Hosparus Health extended her life rather than shortened it.” Ron says Hosparus Health allows families to focus on simply loving their relatives who are dying without having to worry about medical care or other details of caregiving. “By having Hosparus there, my sister and I were able to lavish my mother with attention and affection without any distractions. Hosparus took care of all the rest, and I am forever indebted.” Ron was so moved by his experience with Hosparus Health that he has decided to change his will to include a bequest, so others can benefit from the type of care his mother received. And at age 65 with his own health challenges, he’s grateful to know Hosparus Health is there for him if he ever needs it. “If I ended up in the same situation, I would call months in advance because I know the difference it makes.”

Ron said Edith was afraid of hospitals and was adamant that she wanted to die at home. “It was very important for me to honor her wishes. The last item on my bucket list was to help my mother die comfortably and peacefully, and Hosparus Health helped me do that.” She passed away in August 2018. He adds that his mother lived much longer than he thought
