Heartbeat June/July | 2019
The Green River team celebrated CNA week with a carnival themed party.
From the CEO...
As I’m sure you’ve probably heard, Hosparus Health was named a Best Places to Work in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare! Being named a Best Places to Work is a nationwide honor. But maybe even more impressive is that we are the only healthcare organization in Kentucky to have received the recognition. I am so proud of Hosparus Health, the care we provide, and the great people who make that care possible. In celebration of this award, we are coordinating a breakfast at an upcoming Huddle and sending along a party box. Make sure to capture the celebration with a few photos and send our way. As a Best Places to Work we always look for ways to continue our forward momentum and that means, we are getting closer to implementing HomeCare HomeBase with
our first soft “go-live” set for August 5th at HSI. I am grateful to everyone involved with this monumental task. There are so many projects underway and even with all the activities, our census has continued to grow steadily over the past two months; it means a lot that each of you is staying focused on the most important part of our mission, to provide compassionate care to each patient and family. Enjoy this combo edition of the Heartbeat. It is packed with current and up-to-date news from all our communities. As always, contact me directly with questions or concerns. Gratefully, Phil Marshall

SPREADING T HE WORD
Corporate HomeCare HomeBase
Site is LIVE and Operational for Testing! We’ve been busy over the last few weeks, completing several tasks in order to get our system operational: • We imported data related to providers, facilities, payors, staff members and supplies. • We launched HCHB’s Online Learning Hub (OLH) as a valuable supplement to in-person training for all our learning needs! • Every Core Implementation Team member completed nearly 120 training modules with our Global Team completing 85 modules each. • Many other staff members who will participate in our work groups have also completed discipline specific OLH modules in preparation for more testing. Everyone will be assigned courses as we get closer to implementation. • We have provisioned and deployed over 30 tablets to those participating in preliminary testing with more to come! Tablets will continue to be distributed beginning with our Indiana Community. • HCHB has been on site the last 2 weeks walking the Implementation Team and others through preliminary testing which included entering a referral, admitting a patient, making subsequent visits and reviewing the bereavement and volunteer consoles. We have also had many process discussions. Remember, with HCHB, some of our processes will be different to help us strengthen our efficiencies and compliance! Once you have a chance to experience HomeCare HomeBase, you will quickly recognize some of the many benefits of the system.
What’s Next?
• June: Work groups from different functional areas and disciplines are continuing to test scenarios to ensure that everything works as designed within the system. • July: HSI will begin OLH training • August 5th: HSI Soft Go-Live for new referrals and admissions • September 1st: HSI Hard Go-Live - all patients will be documented in HCHB. • September 16th: Soft Go-Live for Kentucky communities where only new referrals/admissions will start being entered into HCHB; current patients will continue to be documented in Suncoast through September 30th. • October 1st: Hard Go-Live for Kentucky - all patients will be documented in HCHB. “One really big benefit is the ability for all disciplines (including CNAs) to be able to access patient information in one system. Once we get used to the system and gain proficiency, charting will be more efficient and help us stay in compliance with regulatory guidelines more effortlessly. Also, due to the reporting features of HomeCare HomeBase, managers will have real-time data to monitor quality and statistics and support their teams/communities.” -Tracy Shaw, Northeast Clinical Manager

Corporate You are part of the Best Places to Work in Healthcare!
Hosparus Health has been named a Best Place to Work in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare! We are the only company in Kentucky to be named to this national list. We were chosen for Best Places to Work for creating an empowered and satisfied workforce by nurturing a sense of loyalty and building engagement. Companies are being recognized in three categories: healthcare providers, insurers and suppliers. The selection process for the awards was managed by Best Companies Group. “This award is validation that our employees’ dedication and passion for our mission is not only what makes us a great care provider, but a truly great place to work in our industry.” -Melissa Merrifield, Vice President of Human Resources
Sierra Leone: Sister Hospice Updates
Our sister hospice, Shepherd’s Hospice, is continuing their mission in Sierra Leone despite recent setbacks at one of their locations. Employee giving donations have helped them rebuild after the National Road Authority caused a partial demolition while doing road development. They received no financial compensation from the responsible party for the damage. So our contributions truly make an impact! I have personally seen how hosparus helps our communities through dark and heart breaking times. The Over The Top program is designed to show appreciation to a fellow co-worker who has provided excellent customer service and/or support to their peers. Staff can fill out an Over The Top card on any staff member that helped them in some way. Ask your manager where the cards are at your location, or complete online. Completed cards should be put in the designated box. A copy of the card is then sent to the nominated individual and to their supervisor.
Shining Star Our Shining Star program was created so staff could receive the recognition they deserve from families. Patients and families give a donation to Hosparus Health in honor of a caregiver to say thank you.

Maya Mason, Certified Nursing Assistant
ABOUT
M
aya Mason is known at Hosparus Health as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the Southwest Louisville community, but outside of work she has an even larger title: mom. Maya’s typical day starts and ends with her six-year-old son, DJ. “I start my day getting him off to school, then I go to work helping families, return to pick my son up, and go home.” The job doesn’t end there. “Then we start homework while fixing dinner, eating, and getting ready for bed with bath time. The next day we will wake up and do it all over again!” Maya has been with Hosparus Health for nearly 2 years, viewing the position as a sign. “After losing my mom suddenly about two years ago, I wished I had had the opportunity to use Hosparus Health’s services. I prayed for guidance and wanted my next steps to honor her… and here I am.” Her coworker states, “Maya can be counted on to always have a smile on her face and a ‘pep in her step.’ She goes above and beyond to see that her patients are cared for with the highest quality and TLC.”
“Maya has been a great asset to the Southwest team. She is eager to help out and take care of our patients." -Bill Meredith, Supervisor
As a CNA, she serves patients wherever they call home, and assists families during an uncomforting time in their lives. “While helping families I always keep in mind Hosparus Health’s mission & values.” The mission she refers to is Improving the Quality of Life, and our CNAs as part of our interdisciplinary team do just that. We celebrate Maya this month while honoring National Certified Nursing Assistants Week in June. CNAs are the ears, eyes, and voices, of those they take care of. Outside of work, Maya spends time with her son DJ (who she says is her world), her husband, Dontay, and a full house of pets: a fish tank, a turtle (‘Candy Head Max’), and dog (‘Royalty’).

We have volunteers that help at the Kentucky State Reformatory to train inmates in hospice care. This program started in1996.
Hosparus Health’s Hospice Prison Program Part 1: Longtime Volunteer Shares His Experience By: Sky Kevyn Yeasayer, Volunteer Coordinator
On a bimonthly basis, a support team from Hosparus Health makes the short trip out to the Kentucky State Reformatory (KSR) LaGrange to meet with a group of Hosparus Health volunteers — incarcerated men in this medium security state prison. The KSR volunteers have been trained by Hosparus Health staff, following the same training format for volunteers “on the street,” as the inmates refer to the outside world. Last year, 10 volunteers contributed just under 1,600 hours of service. The hospice inmates who are provided companionship and vigil visits are patients of the prison system, with their treatment administered by contracted medical staff of the prison. No Words Required
Chaplain’s Corner
By: Doug Tribolet, Chaplain
There is a quote that is attributed to St. Francis that goes something like this: “Preach always and if you have to, use words.” This is something I have tried to live my life by, but it has never been more evident to me than in my time working as a chaplain at Hosparus Health. I’ll admit, at times it has given me permission to sit back and let others take the lead and even let others answer the difficult questions. It is not always in the saying that we make the greatest impact, but rather in the hearing and doing that patients receive “permission” to be. Early in my career, I had a patient who had always tried to be “strong” and “not break down” in front of their family. As frequently is the case, I showed up and the family scattered. I was left alone with this patient. I offered my hand and he took it. And he didn’t let go.
what seemed like an eternity, but it really was about a half an hour. He cried a little, made a few attempts to say something, but ultimately just sat there holding my hand. After a time, he looked up at me, mouthed “thank you,” curled up in the covers, rolled over and went to sleep. There are many things that a cynic might say about that encounter, but I believe he got what he needed. There is power in the silence--in preaching without using words. Present day author, Gunilla Norris, in her book Inviting Silence: Universal Truths of Meditation says that silence “brings us back to basics, to our senses, to ourselves.” In silence “the lives of others are touched and influenced” in ways large and small. There is power in doing what we do. We show up. Do our work. Speak when we must. But we show up, when not a lot of others would. There is power in what we do. And power in the being present in the face of difficult situations. Thank you for all that you do. And for being willing to preach amid all you do, even if you have to use words.
I sat there in silence with this man holding his hand for

Continued from page 9... There are two KSR staff members who oversee the hospice inmate volunteer program, a licensed clinical social worker and a psychologist. They meet with the group during the month we don’t attend. Whenever a volunteer opening becomes available, they screen inmates to get into the program. Inmates must apply and have one year of clear conduct to become a hospice volunteer, and they must commit to a minimum of three hours each week, as well as being available as needed. A deputy warden ultimately makes the final approval. The program guidelines are strict, and volunteers have been dismissed from the program for overstepping their boundaries. After one year of service, the volunteers receive 90 days “good time.” Most of the volunteers also have other jobs, including a legal aid, a pastoral care assistant, and a maintenance worker. There is a waiting list for the 79 beds designated as medical care. KSR is the only prison facility in the state with a hospice program, and when the first prison volunteers began meeting with patients in October 1996, it was one of a handful of prisons in the country offering hospice care. Volunteer Tony Heitzman has been making visits for 25 years One month on a recent visit, I picked up retired Hosparus Health chaplain and current volunteer Tony Heitzman. After he attended seminary, Tony was a pastor at St. Barnabas Catholic Church and Immaculate Heart of Mary, and then taught math at Trinity High School before beginning a career at Hospice of Louisville in 1987 as Director of Pastoral Care. After picking up Tony, we meet grief counselor Jeff Meyer and volunteer Dr. George Webb at the main building to carpool to KSR, using our travel time to prepare for the visit. Once we have made it down the long driveway toward the looming 12-story tower, we parked and emptied our pockets of everything except for our identification. The first stop is at the guard shack to get clearance to proceed to the main entrance. We walk under the scaffolding that has been recently erected to prevent the bricks from the falling-apart tower landing on visitors’ heads. Another guard unlocks the gate, allows us to enter, and locks us inside the prison lobby, where we hand over our IDs and get temporary prison passes. The guard calls one of the program coordinators to the entrance to escort us to the room where we will meet with the volunteers. While we wait, we go through a security check with a metal detecting wand and pat down. It’s a long walk from the car to the meeting room. Any time we pass an inmate walking on the other side of the hall, or waiting outside an office, Tony always acknowledges them and offers them a friendly greeting. He knows no strangers, nor does he need or want to know what landed an inmate in prison. It has been about 25 years since Tony first got the call from Peter Houck, a chaplain at the prison about starting a hospice program for the lifers who were dying. The idea was originally turned down by the warden, but a couple years later when warden Walt Chapleau came to the prison, he gave permission for the program to proceed. He had received hospice care for his mother and believed in the mission to train prison inmates to work with the terminally ill. Donna Urbansky, Director of Volunteers at the time for Hospice of Louisville, developed a training course for the prison and assembled a team of staff to support the inmates. At that time, and to this day, KSR is the only state prison facility with a nursing facility. Hosparus Health believes everyone, no matter their circumstances, deserves care, comfort and compassion at the end of life. That’s why our prison program volunteers like Tony and the inmates he supports are such an important part of our mission. We could not do it without them. Continue reading parts 2 and 3 of this blog series on our website in the following weeks.
