Ambassador Program The goal of the Hosparus Health Ambassador Program is to raise awareness of our services and volunteer opportunities in our community, engage organizations in making us their local mission, and to communicate our vision to others. An extension of our outreach and volunteer efforts, we work with community members to educate them about our services, they then share the benefits with their networks.
Caring Connections is published for donors and friends of Hosparus Health. To receive news about Hosparus Health programs and events or to be removed from the mailing list, contact Beth Hobson at 502.719.4138 or email your request to bhobson@hosparus.org.

From Our
Dear Community Friends and Supporters, It’s hard to believe we’re already a few months into a brand-new decade! Here at Hosparus Health, you can rest assured that no matter what the ’20s hold, we will continue to deliver the compassionate, high-quality care you’ve come to expect. In 2019, we’re proud to have cared for 8,800 patients and their families, helping them to create more moments they may not have been able to experience without our support. Thanks to the advocacy and kindness of people like you, we’ll be able to make our care available to more families dealing with serious illness who need us more than ever before — in 2020 and beyond. We will always rely on our generous donors to fund services not covered by insurance, like Brad Ruch, who hosts an event each year that provides scholarships to our nurses (page 8) and the Dubois County Community Foundation, which awarded us a grant to launch grief services at our new office in Jasper, IN (back cover). But making monetary gifts like these are not the only ways you can help us secure our legacy. In this issue of Caring Connections, we’re highlighting 20 ways you can make a difference in the lives of seriously ill patients and their loved ones. Some are simple and quick, while others require an ongoing commitment, but they all make a lasting impact.
If you’re a talented quilter or crafter, you can make care blankets for patients that often become a keepsake for the family after their loved one passes. If you’ve had an experience with our care, we invite you to join one of our Patient and Family Advisory Councils to voice your opinions on what we’re doing right, and what we can do better. Become a member of the Autumn Leaf Society by including us in your estate plans. Or, volunteer a few hours a month in whatever way that’s most comfortable for you — perhaps as a companion to patients, at the registration table at one of our fundraising events or as an Ambassador at your church or business association. I encourage you to explore this issue of Caring Connections to find new ways to connect with Hosparus Health in the coming year. On behalf of everyone we serve, I want to personally thank you for any amount of your valuable time, talent and treasure you choose to share with Hosparus Health. With so many worthy causes in our community, I am truly humbled that you entrust us with your support, year after year. Gratefully,
PHIL MARSHALL President and CEO

Volunteer and Patient Recreate a 45 Year Old Shop Project By: Sky Yeasayer
“finished wood” project was a lamp that I made in middle school shop class, 45 years ago. I told him I still own the lamp, and we use it in a spare bedroom in the house. So, when Ed then asked me about doing a project, I said it would be fun to make another lamp, all these years later. Ed said, “let’s do it!” The next visit, I brought the lamp and we started the process of recreating it.

ndy Kiehl joined Hosparus Health volunteers in May 2019 after one of our resource nurses recruited him in a yoga studio. In addition to working full time, Andy was also involved with Holy Trinity Parish School, volunteering with the sports team and coaching for 20 years, but he still was called to donate his time at Hosparus Health. Andy jumped right in providing companionship to patients in Louisville after meeting the requirements to become a volunteer. Kayla Crawley, volunteer manager, said Andy has been great not only building relationships with patients, but also advocating for their needs. He brings flexibility and visits at times that not only provide companionship, but also respite for the caregiver. Andy received a call from Kayla in August about a new assignment. Our patient, Ed Dahlem, hoped to be paired with a volunteer who enjoyed sharing his love of woodworking. Andy shares this about the experience: I was assigned to Ed because he is an avid woodworker and has a shop in the basement of his home. During our first visit, while getting to know each other, he asked if I had ever done any woodworking projects. Although handy, and having done a lot of home improvement, my only real
As an amazingly talented man, Ed worked with me to show how we could make a replica. The first step was picking out the right material from his extensive collection of wood. He possessed a great eye for design and detail and chose a beautiful contrasting wood to put a modern look on an old design.
An engineer by education and trade, he instructed me in the next step to make size drawings of the pieces of the lamp. The third step was cutting all pieces out of the wood. There were design challenges along the way with the cord, electrical parts and pump handle switch, but Ed is a great thinker and we worked together to solve each issue. After sanding and applying urethane to all the pieces, we assembled the lamp. The final step was connecting all the electrical parts. After just five visits, we were able to put in a bulb, plug the lamp in and light it up, side by side with the original from 45 years ago. Although this was far from the most creative, challenging or artistic project that Ed has ever done, he was an amazing teacher and was as proud as I was when we finished. One of the great rewards of volunteering is the feeling of connecting with a patient and finding common interests and accomplishments. This was a fantastic experience. I look forward to my time with Ed and hope to be able to work on other projects in the coming weeks.

Congratulations to winner Missy Hillock and professional dancer Clay Marshall.
t was another unforgettable September night at Hosparus Health’s 13th Annual Dancing with Our Southern Indiana Stars (DWOSIS)! More than 650 guests came out to Huber’s Orchard & Winery to support eight local celebrities who hit the dance floor in support of Hosparus Health’s patients and families in Indiana. Thanks to the community’s generous support, the event raised nearly $250,000! Missy Hillock dancing with her pro partner, Clay Marshall, took the trophy home after performing the first-ever dance battle against Neil Kochert and his pro, Cherie Lanier! A big thank you to all who supported the event including the professional dancers: Irina Morozova, Damian Pataluna, Cherie Lanier, Jani Szukk and Clay Marshall. The success of this event would not be possible without our committee chairs Donna Kirchgessner, Pam Lumley and Carrie Magers who volunteer their time. ur 14th annual Candle Glow Gala was an incredible success! The event raised more than $345,000, allowing us to offer our services to those who may otherwise be unable to afford them. We also honored individuals who have gone above and beyond to support our mission, and who live their lives with an “attitude of gratitude.” Award winners included: Jack Medford and the Medford Family Foundation, (Sherrill Thirlwell Award) for their many years of support for our Kourageous Kids program; Bill & Juanita Beach, (Sister Marilyn Spink Service Award) for their devoted support of Hosparus Health for nearly 30 years; and our very own Sr. Hospice and Palliative Medicine Physician Dr. Thomas McKain, (Dr. Joe Rotella Compassion Award) for providing exemplary care to our patients and families. Additional recognitions were given to Helen Donaldson, who played an instrumental role as Hosparus Health’s CEO in the 1990s, and Mission and Stewardship Officer Bob Mueller who led countless successful fundraising campaigns over the years. They each received Ovation Awards and the inaugural Mueller Gratitude Award. The event would not be possible without our amazing event committee, led by Gala Chairs Denise Roby and Lori Tyra, and Glow Lounge Chairs Lauren Hendricks and Taylor Springelmeyer. Family Honors Late Father by Providing Scholarships to Hosparus Health Nurses Ruch Recipients Say Thanks...
Rhoda Webb Filback, BSN Clinical Manager, Barren River
The Ruch Foundation scholarship helped further my education by offsetting a portion of the costs. I have less anxiety about how to pay for school, which has allowed me to focus on studying. Receiving the scholarship has afforded me the opportunity to study payor guidelines and business processes that were previously beyond my scope of practice as an on-call nurse. I have never found myself unable to offer compassionate care for patients and their families but continuing my education

allowed me to recognize that the “best quality of life” is different for every patient and family. I have earned a BSN since receiving The Ruch Foundation scholarship and am nine hours away from completing a MSN!

Bill Meredith, ADN, RN
Clinical Supervisor, Louisville
The scholarship has helped me to stay focused and in school to obtain my BSN (almost completed). As I continue my education, I can pass that knowledge along to my staff and increase the quality of our overall patient care.
This scholarship helped me obtain my BSN. With this degree, I have been able to expand my knowledge in the nursing field which, in turn, furthers Hosparus Health’s mission to improve the quality of life. I am now able to easily find evidence-based practices that can help our patients and families. The BSN courses also taught me about the rapid changes occurring in the healthcare system and how this applies to the end-of-life setting.
Area Director of Intake and Customer Support
Because of the scholarship I received, I have been able to further my education without borrowing or taking out additional student loans. The Ruch Foundation has provided me the education experience I need to implement my learning into daily practices as a manager in the healthcare industry. The scholarship allowed me to earn my Master of Science in Nursing Leadership and Management. By incorporating new knowledge and concepts, I can lead my teams more efficiently to better serve our patients.

My Autumn Leaf Story By: Lisa Sanford
You might know me as Director of Development for Hosparus Health, but this amazing organization touched my life long before I came to work here. My Hosparus story began in 1990, when the mother of the man I would marry was our patient in Central Kentucky. Johnnie Ruth was a Christian, military wife and mother of four boys. When she got sick, my now-husband Steve was in graduate school and working part time. On top of all that, he became her primary caregiver. It was stressful, but he says he wouldn’t have changed a thing. Thanks to Hosparus Health, Steve was able to give Johnnie Ruth the dignity she deserved at the end of her life. Her nurse helped Steve understand what was happening, and gave him the support he needed to just be her son (and not caregiver) and make the most of the time she had left. A volunteer also provided respite care and gave Steve much-needed breaks. Johnnie Ruth passed away peacefully in October 1990. After Steve and I married, I was working as branch director for Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) and believed it was a job I would stay in forever. God had other plans. In early 2004, BBBS was renting office space from Hosparus Health when I learned about an opening. I heard my calling loud and clear, and this year celebrated 16 years of service. But my story doesn’t end there. Twelve years ago, my sister-in-law passed away from cancer at our Inpatient Care Center in downtown Louisville, KY. It became a home-away-from-home for my brother and nephew, who lived three hours away, allowing them to be by her side until the end. My family is forever grateful for the comfort and support we received. After such deeply touching experiences, it was an easy choice for Steve and me to join the Autumn Leaf Society by leaving a gift to Hosparus Health in our estate plan. Now, I’m proud to take over for Bob Mueller as liaison for the loyal donors of our Autumn Leaf Society, and help others do the same. Please contact me to find out how you can become an Autumn Leaf Society member, and make a planned gift that will ensure all our patients and families have the opportunity to create more moments together. Jasper Office Opens Hosparus Health is now offering compassionate
hospice and palliative care to more families in Indiana thanks to the opening of our new office in Jasper.
A grand opening was held in September with Jasper Mayor Dean Vonderheide, state representatives and members of Dubois County Chamber of Commerce in attendance.
The full-service office serves patients in Dubois,
Perry, Orange, Daviess, Martin, Pike and Spencer
counties. Because the office is centrally located, we
are now able to quickly and easily provide our full continuum of care to seriously ill patients and their families. In addition to medical care, the new office offers spiritual, social and grief services. Thank you to the Dubois County Community
Foundation for the generous $10,000 grant which will fund grief support groups for adults and children, a community memorial service and other specialized bereavement services.
