I make that statement not to deflate anyone, but to simply acknowledge what I think the Hosparus Health team is experiencing. But even as we face these challenges, I
am encouraged by all of the positive momentum I see on the horizon. I am encouraged that our teams have pulled together to conquer Homecare Homebase as
our new system, despite its challenges, to better serve our patients. I am encouraged that after a year of an

HomeCare HomeBase Go Live A sincere thank you to everyone for your time and effort implementing Homecare Homebase
(HCHB). Because of your diligence, we were able to meet our go live date of October 1st for the entire organization, while continuing to provide patient care and keeping all functions of the organization
operational! It was no small feat to enter nearly 1,100 current couch visit patients through all stages of
the patient life cycle, attend in-person classes in eight locations over a two week period, and maintain
our census. We appreciate Indiana and our support departments leading the way – their experiences helped us with the Kentucky roll-out.
As you can probably imagine, we are far from finished with our HCHB journey! Now that we have the system implemented, there are many processes we are still working on – we consider this our “refinement stage.” As you use the system and get more comfortable with it please let us know if you have questions or suggestions to improve the functionality. Email questions/suggestions to Courtney Broyles. Thank you again for your continued patience, perseverance, collaboration and feedback so we can make HCHB the best system for you, your patients and families, and our organization.
Have you seen this in your email? If so, that means there’s an important update about HCHB you need to read! Don’t miss out!
Heart Connection TM Program Connects Nationally For past few months, Stephanie Alvey Banks has been working with the National Partnership for Hospice Innovation (NPHI)
and four other well-known NPHI member hospices on heart failure programs. Together they have developed a standardized
program that will provide other hospice organizations the tools to launch a cardiac program. Hosparus Health has seen patients benefit from the Heart Connection TM program’s additional support, education and quick access to medications for symptom relief. Now, more patients living with advanced heart disease will be able to benefit from our expertise. Stephanie will presenting the Heart Connection TM program at the NPHI Annual Summit in late October.

we all need to be aware our Ephraim McDowell office is in a residential

The touching gesture of the clay jars with my mom’s thumb-print was helpful, as was all the practical paperwork and explanation regarding the details involved such as the death certificate. arah Williams has worked in the Hosparus Health Center for Performance Excellence (also known as the Education Department) as the Training & Development Specialist, Level II for the past 6 ½ years. Sarah oversees general orientation along with other
specific programs for the organization. “I always have what we are currently teaching in the back of my mind. As needs evolve for
the organization, I look at how that fits with what we are currently doing, and what needs to possibly be updated,” she says. She also routinely works on eLearning modules and other
training projects as requests come in. “A lot of what I do is seen only by Hosparus staff, but
occasionally I will assist with materials presented at national conferences, and that is exciting. My typical day isn’t very typical most days- and I love that!”
“Sarah brings a wealth of talent and creativity to her work. She is always willing to assist leaders and staff with their presentations whether they are for Hosparus Health or for national
conferences. Sarah coordinates our general orientation process and has made it exceptional.
Thank you Sarah!” - Deborah May, Sarah’s supervisor
Prior to Hosparus Health, Sarah worked for University Hospital in the Staff Performance & Development Office. She oversaw
orientation, monitored Patient Perception of Care (HCAHPS) survey results to better adapt staff training for customer service-related
areas, and served as the Communications Chair on the Diversity Committee. When asked why she chose to come to work for
Hosparus Health, Sarah’s response was heartfelt and sincere, “My role at Hosparus is to support the staff that are supporting our
patients and families, and I take a lot of pride in that. I hope at the end of the day that I’ve made a positive impact to the organization and to the staff that I interact with.”
Outside of Hosparus Health, Sarah’s favorite things to do include traveling and spending time with family and friends. “I live in
Louisville, and I love going to Cherokee Park and exploring new restaurants and things to do. I don’t have kids, but I love animals. I only have one cat (Dougal), but he keeps me busy- his nickname at the vet is “Mr. Excitement” and it is well earned!”
First job? Selling corndogs at the KY State Fair Favorite vacation? I’ve been to Europe several times but my most memorable trip was with my mom. “We were re-tracing her steps when she moved to England in the 1960’s… because her college roommate wanted to marry Ringo Starr!”. Favorite ice-cream flavor? Homemade Ice Cream & Pie Kitchen strawberry ice cream on a chocolate-dipped waffle cone. What’s an interesting fact about yourself? Your spiritual connection. C H A P L A I N ’ S CO R N E R
What are you doing?: Spiritual Care Explained BY: D I N A C A R R O L L
A patient once said to one of our Hosparus chaplains, “I sure like the way you listen.” That affirmation is music to any chaplain’s ear! Deep, reflective listening is the cornerstone to good spiritual care. National Pastoral Care Week is celebrated each October. It was established in 1985 with the primary objective being “to celebrate the education for and practice of professional Spiritual care.” So, it feels right to talk a bit about “the education for and practice of professional spiritual care.” Just what does that mean? Certainly, spiritual care entails meeting the religious needs of our patients and their families: providing needed rituals and sacraments and prayer; connecting or reconnecting folks to communities of faith. But it is also about the larger spiritual needs--issues around life’s meaning and purpose, coping with life’s emotional hurts that can also wound the spirit, how one relates to others, to themselves, to the world, and to their understanding of the Divine. We as chaplains only get to those places with our patients by listening. Deeply. Patiently. Quietly. Parker Palmer, a noted author and speaker about education, spirituality and social change, says, “The soul speaks its truth only under quiet, inviting, and trustworthy conditions. The soul is like a wild animal - tough, resilient, savvy, self-sufficient, and yet exceedingly shy. If we want to see a wild animal, the last thing we should do is to go crashing through the woods, shouting for the creature to come out. But if we are willing to walk quietly into the woods and sit silently for an hour or two at the base of a tree, the creature we are waiting for may well emerge, and out of the corner of an eye we will catch a glimpse of the precious wildness we seek.” If you have ever made a visit with a chaplain and noticed them not speaking much, that does not come from a place of laziness, or not knowing the “right” thing to say. It is by design. It is from intention. We seek to create an inviting and trustworthy space for the soul of our patients and their families to come forth. PAG E 12 | H OS PA R U S H E A LT H N E W S L E T T E R
Chaplains can only do this because we have done it ourselves, because we have had much practice in being the “non-anxious presence” in the room. One becomes a professional chaplain by receiving a master’s degree in Divinity, Theology, Religious Education or other related field of study. We also go through a training process called Clinical Pastoral Education. Each “unit” of training is a semester long focus on our own story, our theological beliefs, our understandings of the psychology of human behavior and how we integrate those areas. Each unit requires 400 hours of time spent with patients and in group and individual supervision. The intent is to make a chaplain theologically and psychologically knowledgeable, and to be comfortable with their own hurts so that they can quietly enter the hurts of others. Hosparus requires their chaplains to have at least two units of Clinical Pastoral Education. Many of your chaplain have even more units, and several are certified by The Association of Professional Chaplains, The American Association of Pastoral Counselors, or the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. As we celebrate National Pastoral Care Week, know this: Each of your Hosparus chaplains feels honored to walk alongside our terminally ill patients and their families, hearing their pain and hopes, and seeking to bring healing. And each of your Hosparus chaplains feels honored to walk alongside you as we do this sacred work together. Call on us when you yourself need someone to listen to you--deeply and patiently and quietly. Todd Sprouse gives a service to a hospice family after the passing of their loved one. Chaplains are often asked to do this service after connecting with a family, which sometimes means working uncommon hours or days to help out.

Hairstylist Volunteers His Time to Bring Dignity to Hospice Patients BY: S K Y K E V Y N Y E A S AY E R
“You matter because you are you, and you matter to the end of your life.” Dame Cicely Saunders said these words over 50 years ago when describing the dignity a person deserves until their final moments. Serious illness impacts every aspect of a person’s life, and for many of our patients, it can make it difficult or impossible to maintain the same level of care to their appearance they did prior to becoming ill. Hosparus Health’s licensed hair care volunteers provide a much-needed service in patient’s homes, giving them a chance to look their best. Hairstylist David Timperman has offered his talents to Hosparus Health patients for almost 10 years. He is owner of the salon, Bangs, in Downtown Louisville. Like many volunteers, David had a personal experience with a loved one in hospice care and wanted to give back. A hairstylist for nearly 40 years, David has his own system of providing great service, including using a large cape behind the patient and one covering them. Depending on the patient’s pain level, a visit will usually take 40 minutes, and often depends on the caregiver. David is so outgoing and easy to talk to, that often times caregivers, who may not be able to leave the home, are thrilled to have him as a visitor. The caregiver is an important part of the hair care visit, helping David position the patient and propping up their loved one so he can get to the back of their head, the hardest part of a hair care visit. It’s a different process cutting hair of a bedridden patient, but he says the benefit to the patient is worth any of his own discomfort. David goes wherever the patient calls home, and has visited patients in nursing homes and our inpatient care center, the HICC. One of the more emotional experiences for him happened at the HICC. He once visited a woman with long hair who told him that her whole life she had wanted short hair, but never had the courage to do it. She told him, “Why not now?” and asked for a short pixie cut. Once the appointment was complete, he held up the mirror for her, and she started to cry. He thought he had done something horrible to her hair, but she was so happy with her new style that she was crying tears of joy. David said that he enjoys what he does so much and finds it so rewarding that he feels like he is the one who benefits the most. He recounted another emotional experience after cutting the hair of a non-verbal patient. Afterwards, the patient told David “thank you,” and his caregiver told David that was the first time the man had spoken in two years. Licensed hair care stylists must meet all the requirements of patient and family care volunteers, in addition to keeping their license current yearly and completing a competency evaluation with Hosparus Health staff and another hair care professional every three years. With his salon in the shadow of the Omni Hotel, Derby time brings guests from out of town who are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on a visit with David to look their best. While the circumstances are much different for our patients, as a volunteer, David offers them the same thing. We are so grateful for the special care David provides our patients, helping them to feel better about themselves. Maya Angelou said that, “Dignity really means that I deserve the best treatment that I can receive. And that I have the responsibility to give the best treatment I can to other people.” This is exactly what David brings to Hosparus Health as a hair care volunteer.
