November
2017
Founded in 1978. Hosparus Health now serves over 7,500 patients and their families annually.
H
ard to believe it is November already, we’ve had an incredibly busy month! Some of us attended the 1st Annual National Partnership for Hospice Innovation (NPHI) Summit where we joined over 30 of our fellow nonprofit hospice providers to learn from each other and share best practices. Denise Gloede and I participated in two TedTalk style sessions; Denise talked about our KKids program and I provided insight into the innovation center we know as the Thrive Innovation Center. We had visits this month from the leadership of C-TAC, the Center to Transform Advanced Care and the new CEO of NHPCO Edo Banach. Conversations
with each of these groups confirms our confidence that our style of service delivery and our community involvement are instrumental in helping our industry move upstream to take care of people longer through advanced illness care, or supportive care for the seriously ill. Our advanced illness care pilot is gaining national attention and is included in conversations to help shape this type of care into a new alternative payment model for Medicare reimbursement. I saw many of you at our recent Huddles, at our Louisville picnic a couple weeks ago and I will celebrate with more of you as we make our rounds to recognize the many years of service you continue to provide to Hosparus Health patients and families. All of our teams are heavily engaged in patient care as we continue to have an average daily census of over 1,100 patients. Each and every one of you is part of our success, and I appreciate your dedication.
that’s even possible) and many of our patients and families will need additional support as they navigate taking care of their loved ones along with enjoying the meaning of the season. I am always reminded of how much our patients and families value our care teams and how, especially at this time of year, we value the time, talents and treasures our own volunteers provide. So, take a deep breath, enjoy the calm of early November and continue making a difference for those we serve…one patient and family at a time!
The holidays are just around the corner, our lives will get busier (if

Grief Counseling Center Camp Evergreen Recap: Director’s Corner Another year of serving families through our Camp Evergreen weekend has come and gone. In addition to fulfilling the mission of Camp Evergreen, we identified some unique goals to increase and diversify our volunteer base and increase our outreach to families that could benefit from our camp. Highlights from this year’s camp: • We saw many veteran volunteers return, and several first time campers, including staff and two volunteers who were campers many years ago. • Applications poured in from our service area and beyond. We had families travel from as far as Lexington, KY and Indianapolis, IN. • University of Louisville’s Music Therapy collaborated with the grief counseling center to provide a team building on Friday night. They also wrote lyrics and music to update the Camp Evergreen song.

Thanksgiving: Cultivating a Culture of Gratitude By: Scott Kennedy, Resource Chaplain
At this time of year many of us are busy making plans to get together with family and friends to enjoy a big meal, watch some football or just take a nap. But hopefully all of us will choose to take some time to be thankful for all the blessings we have enjoyed over this past year. Our spiritual care form in Suncoast lists gratitude alongside faith, hope and love as possible spiritual strengths that our patients and families might possess. Many spiritual traditions focus on the value of gratitude as a spiritual practice. The Christian scriptures list faith, hope and love as the most enduring spiritual qualities. They also say the secret formula for experiencing true peace is to refuse to let anxiety take control of your life, opting instead to choose joy, prayer and thanksgiving. Psychological research also shows us the importance of being grateful. Gratitude reduces a multitude of toxic emotions, from envy and resentment to frustration and regret. Robert Emmons, a leading gratitude researcher, has conducted multiple studies on the link between
gratitude and well-being. His research confirms that gratitude effectively increases happiness and reduces depression. Anecdotal data suggests that gratitude is a game-changer. Attitude determines altitude. In other words, when we choose an attitude of gratitude, and we encourage our patients and families to do the same, we are bound to soar above our circumstances and find peace and contentment in every situation. So, during this Holiday season and throughout the year I hope we can all embrace an attitude of gratitude. Cultivating a culture of gratitude within our organization will go a long way towards improving our health and the health of our patients and their families. Gratitude requires so little yet yields so much. Be thankful and watch your peace, hope, joy and contentment grow in ever-increasing measure. Happy Thanksgiving!

Honor at the End of Life: Veteran to Veteran By: Doug Hedges Regional Director of Customer Support & HICC, Retired Senior Master Sergeant Hosparus Health takes great pride in providing care to all our patients and their families. We are privileged and honored to provide care to veteran patients who have served our country. As a veteran myself, I am proud to participate in the recognition that we provide to veterans. Hosparus Health is part of the We Honor Veterans program which is a collaboration with the HospiceVeteran Partnership (HVP) and National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO). We have joined the mission to establish an enduring network of hospice and VA professionals, veterans, and volunteers to provide quality services through the end of life for veterans. One out of every four dying Americans is a veteran, and a vast majority of veterans are not enrolled in VA and may not be aware of endof-life services and benefits available to them. Our goal is to help better serve and honor our nation’s veterans through “For all this program.
• Having patriotic or branch specific prayer blankets that are given to each patient, and the families can keep this upon the passing of the veteran patient. • Recognizing each veteran for their service through a presentation of a We Honor Veterans certificate that is usually presented by one of our veteran volunteers.
who have In addition to our veteran patients, our veteran volunteers are an amazing served in the United group that continues to give back States Armed Forces, and is willing to come at all hours we know what value and of the day to make presentations importance that the flag to patients. Most all the prayer represents and we strive blankets and flags are provided to continue that honor to veterans through donations and other volunteers who want to make and respect. ”
Our Hosparus Health Inpatient Care Center (HICC) ensures that all veteran patients are given the respect they deserve. For all who have served in the United States Armed Forces, we know what value and importance that the flag represents and we strive to continue that honor and respect. When a veteran is admitted to the HICC, we honor them in the following ways:
• Placing a flag magnet on the doorpost of their room so that all staff and visitors who enter their room will know that the patient is a veteran. • Providing appropriate sized American flags that are placed in a flower vase to help decorate the room.

sure they have what they need to be recognized at this point in their life. This is the least we as an organization can do for those who were willing to sacrifice so much for us as Americans.
I am proud every day to work with so many employees and volunteers that care for those veteran patients who willingly gave so much for us. Thank you to all our veterans!
