Chaplains Corner Music Soothes the Soul By: Rev. Carol Rubarts, Chaplain
If you were asked to sing along to Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Ave Maria, Shalom Aleichem or to Chants of praise…. where does it take you? Perhaps a marriage celebration? Singing in a choir? Holy Day Celebrations? Your Grandmother’s voice? Music transcends culture, language and religions and can provide soothing and healing. ‘Music is an art imbued with power to penetrate into the very depths of the soul’ --Plato Music ministry by our Hosparus Chaplains, whether it be vocal, the use of an electronic device or the acoustic guitar, provides well-being and peace of mind. “Music calms the spirit and usually provides serenity for patient’s
“I continue to look to Dina as a leader amongst clinicians to improve my daily practice. Dina embodies the mission and the calling of the work we do and I hope to one day approach her skills.”
Chaplain Dina Carroll to Receive the Joe Rotella Compassionate Award Hosparus presents this award to a care provider who exemplifies compassion through extraordinary patient care, support or advocacy. Congratulations Dina!

peaceful end-of-life journey,” shared Chaplain Rafael Macaranas. A nursing facility patient who was reported as not having spoken in months, surprised her caregivers when the Chaplain led her in singing ‘You Are My Sunshine.’ She sang every word and right on key! Such a pleasant time for all. The singing carried us into a sacred space, and all reported feeling the presence of happiness and joy. Music allows the Chaplain and patient to form a bond
“One of Dina’s most endearing qualities is her “down to earth” personality and sense of humility. One of the most compassionate people at Hosparus Health.”
“She knows how to compassionately ‘hold space’ for each person, enabling them to feel comfortable sharing their vulnerability and walk away feeling heard and understood. For her, deep listening is an art that comes naturally.”
and share their love of a specific tune or hymn or style of music. Patients who are not socially interactive may respond with a smile when hearing a favorite song. Chaplain Todd Sprouse shared, “music has a way of getting into the cracks that words alone cannot.” He utilizes music with dementia patients and reports seeing moments of facial responses when the patient hears something familiar. It seems to be a comforting touchstone, as they remember who they are in the moment. Often times music is used with patients who can not converse as a way to provide spiritual support. In recent years, studies in neuroscience have shown that music can trigger personal memories. How music is used in religious services and spiritual celebrations helps us to embrace the sacred in one’s own beliefs. Chaplain Peggy Holthaus discusses with her patients and/or families the patient’s spirituality, and asks if the patient has a favorite hymn. She downloads it from her iPad, and as it plays she sits with the patient silently and then explores the meaning of the song for that individual. This often sparks a sharing of memories.
Music encourages patients to express emotion and reflect on life. And this can open the door to spiritual healing.
Music is also a powerful tool in facilitating relaxation. When paired with prayer, meditative exercises or Reiki Energy, it is shown to promote a sense of peace, rejuvenation of one’s spirituality and well being. In 2000, Kate Munger founded ‘Thresholds’, a bedside support choir for End-of-Life comfort for patients. Teams of 2 or 3 volunteers sit at a person’s bedside, singing a repertoire of short and simple tunes. Munger reports that comatose or agitated patients become calmer, and breathe easier. Each time we hear the songs or tunes we love, the joy they once brought returns, and we live into the experience of that moment. So, take a moment, hum along now to your favorite tune, and go to a place of peace and joy. Feel renewed. Music does soothe the soul.

NAGC Fall Conference & Webcast on Children’s Grief Half-day NAGC’S webcast onhalf-day children anticipating Webcast ondeath Children Anticipating Death November is Children’s Grief Awareness Month. Join us for this Live Webcast on Children’s Grief! For Children's Grief Awareness Month, the Hosparus Health Grief Counseling Center in collaboration with the National Alliance for Grieving Children will host a Fall Webcast on Children's Grief. Ethical Considerations for Working with Children Anticipating a Death The process of dying presents many challenges to individuals and families impacted by a life limited illness or terminal diagnosis. When children are present and part of the immediate situation, family members and professionals sometimes are at a loss as to how to connect with, involve, or talk to children about the realities of the situation. This webcast will explore the ethical implications of supporting children who are anticipating the death of a parent, the death of a sibling, or their own death. Our three presenters will provide practical information and advice for caring for children in the face of a terminal diagnosis. They will share information about how to talk to children about death, how to include children in rituals, and ways to offer support throughout the dying process. Speakers: Jeanine Clapsaddle, MA, LMFT, CCLS is a Certified Child Life Specialist and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 20 years’ experience working with pediatric patients and their families, providing intervention and support throughout their course of medical care, transition to home and bereavement experiences. Patti Anewalt, PhD, LPC, FT, has been with Hospice & Community Care for 22 years. As Director at the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, Patti oversees a wide variety of bereavement services for adults, children and teens, serving over 5500 individuals a month. My Experience as a Hosparus Health Public Policy Intern By: Alicia Furlan Summer 2017 Intern Although I have studied and appreciated public policy and marketing during high school and in my first year of college, interning at Hosparus Health was my first time exploring these topics and the challenges they pose in practice. This internship provided me with an understanding of how non-profits operate and advocate on behalf of their communities. Additionally, I had the opportunity to research and select an advocacy software platform for use on an ongoing basis to enhance communication, action, and transparency between legislators, community members, and Hosparus Health.
Over the course of the summer, I attended several meetings, brain-storming sessions, and talks that highlighted the priorities and long term goals of nonprofits across the sector and specifically for Hosparus Health. In June, I accompanied Gwen Cooper to a meeting with Melanie Douglas from Senator Donnelly’s staff to discuss the logistics and implications of the Patient Choice and Quality Care Act and the 2018 CMS Wage Index. In preparation for this meeting and general discussion, I read and dissected both pieces of legislation as well as Hosparus’ comments regarding the Wage Index. Engaging with these texts greatly enhanced my familiarity with policy and its application
“I got a glimpse of the work that Hosparus Health does to provide comfort and care to thousands of patients and how important it is to advocate for the continued funding and support of services ” in practice. I also had the opportunity to attend a public policy summit led by the Kentucky Nonprofit Network. The summit was an incredibly insightful experience and an introduction to the intricacies of nonprofits. I dialogued with a diverse group of individuals about the Tax reform bill and 2018 budget, the Johnson amendment, charitable giving, misconceptions associated with nonprofits, health care reform, and a myriad of other relevant topics. The biggest take away from the summit was that composing a united front representing all nonprofits is the most effective way to address and persuade legislators. The third notable event was a talk given by Elaine Chao regarding transportation policy. Though the subject differed from health policy, I enjoyed listening to a woman so knowledgeable and respected in her field. My main project for the summer was researching and implementing an advocacy software program that could be embedded into the Hosparus Health website. The software needed to manage bill tracking, volunteer organization, easy legislator contact, seamless site integration, action alert capability, etc. The software also needed to allow for effective grassroots and grass tops advocacy as well as the ability to cater to legislators in both Kentucky and Indiana. After contacting several companies, reviewing their software programs through live demos, and pinpointing the most important features for Hosparus Health, we ultimately chose a company called SoftEdge. Hosparus Health is currently in the process of reviewing, purchasing, and customizing the software for our website. The pieces of legislation I read and meetings I attended during my internship made it easy to identify Hosparus’ priorities and the best bills and articles to include on the advocacy page when the implementation is completed. The new software will allow community members to educate themselves and act upon relevant bills that will affect the quality of hospice and palliative care that their family members will receive. Hosparus Health will be able to track bills and actions, identify important relationships between constituents and legislators, and promote critical segments of information. This tool will decidedly increase the impact that Hosparus Health will have when influencing public policy.
12
My internship ultimately provided me with a comprehensive view of nonprofit policy goals and how to achieve them through marketing and advocacy. I also became aware of the (continued on next pg..)
(continued) proximity between policy figures making decisions in Washington and their very direct impact on individuals in my community. More specifically, I got a glimpse of the work that Hosparus Health does to provide comfort and care to thousands of patients and how important it is to advocate for the continued funding and support of services that greatly benefit those who rely on hospice and palliative care.
“I feel very fortunate to be in the Hosparus Health Palliative Care program. I was not able to enter hospice because I was not willing to relinquish my trilogy. It was wonderful to not have the “doors shut on me” but to have another option to help me carry out the time I have left.” -Previous Patient’s comment on a satisfaction survey
