From the CEO...

Whether the temperature outside reflects it or not, you know it’s springtime in Kentucky when Derby season rolls around! This year, we’re pleased to sponsor several Derby Festival events, including the GospelFest and the Steamboat Race Trial (for seniors), a practice run for the big race aboard the Belle of Louisville. On a more serious note, we all know that having difficult conversations about end-oflife planning is more important than ever. Thanks to everyone who participated in our educational events or shared our social media posts during National Healthcare Decisions Week (NHDW) April 16-22.

WHAT’S UP WITH THE WIGS? Find out what is going on with Hosparus Health’s biggest goals. PAGE 2

We decided this year to focus on training our own team and other community healthcare professionals on advance directives to build a foundation for ongoing efforts to keep our provider partners and communites informed about Advance care Planning. If you didn’t get a chance to play the Hello game, don’t worry. We’ll offer other opportunities in the future. Awareness efforts like NHDW are just one of many great ideas and projects in bloom at Hosparus Health this spring. I look forward to sharing more as we head into the summer months.

How to Update your Email Signature & Profile Photo with Office 365

We are pleased to announce that Hosparus Health has been named a 2018 Hospice Honors recipient by HEALTHCAREfirst, a leader in home health and hospice software solutions. This prestigious annual award recognizes the top hospices in the country that continuously provide the highest level of quality as measured from the caregiver’s point of view.

In addition, for the eighth time in the past nine years, Hosparus Health has been named a “Best Place to Work in Kentucky” in the medium employer category (150-499 employees). Congratulations to all our staff and volunteers that make Hosparus Health such a great place to work!

CorporateHeartbeat Suncoast Version 8

Improved platform in more ways than one! Suncoast Version 8 its on its way to fruition. The processes currently complete are: • Workflow workgroups- discussed workflow routines to help streamline your visits. • Forms workgroups- reduced the number of forms, as an organization, from 306 to 166. All hospice forms have been created, and we are now working on Palliative, KKids, and Bereavement. • SuperUser identification- Community leadership has identified individuals to be your V8 SuperUsers; these individuals will be your immediate resource when we go-live.

New Resources on the HUB!

The Marketing Department has added new resources for employees on the HUB. Under the marketing tab (left sidebar) you will find a folder labeled “brochures and materials”. These are for internal electronic use only, and a way for our employees to stay up to date with the most current organization services.

Next up to accomplish: • SuperUser Training Workgroups will begin May 7th and end June 1st. • EndUser Training Workgroups- will be held in your respective communities; beginning June 4th and ending July 20th! Questions about the Marketing page on the HUB? Contact Anna Brown at annabrown@hosparus.org.

Billing Department WIG Last year Phil introduced The 4 Disciplines of Execution to our managers. Shortly after that, the Billing Department set a WIG of their own to reduce our Days in Accounts Receivable to 39.5. To do this, the Billing team developed lead measures and designed their own scoreboard to keep track of their own score. The team meets weekly to see the progress, and set next week

goals to reduce lead measures. In April, the department met their goal-- EXCEEDING it actually-- reducing Days in AR to 39.4!

Camp Evergreen is provided under the direction of professional counselors from Hosparus Health Grief Counseling Center and trained volunteers. Camp Evergreen is a safe place where families can: • share their feelings • come to understand their feelings of grief • develop skills to cope with grief in healthy ways.

Volunteer Veteran Corps: Honoring Our Own The camp offers: • games • grief workshops • a campfire • low ropes • team building • art activities • a memorial service

Hosparus Health has amazing volunteers, including 8 males and 1 female Veteran Volunteers who represent the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. Through For additional information contact Candice Evans at the Grief Counseling Center - cevans@hosparus.org or Sky Yeasayer in Volunteer Services - syeasayer@hosparus.org their commitment to honoring their fellow veterans who are in our hospice or palliative care programs, they deliver gratitude for the veteran’s service, along with a certificate and handmade quilt, many of which come from our friends at the Kentucky Cover Lovers Quilt Guild. Camp Evergreen is made possible through the generous support of the WHAS Crusade for Children and Kosair Charities, as well as other corporations, groups and individuals. Registration fees cover only a portion of the expense of this program.

At their March 23rd monthly meeting, the Kentucky Cover Lovers invited Gerry Hope, one of our seasoned Veteran Volunteers, to speak to their group about how meaningful the quilts are to our veteran patients and families. Twenty-one patriotic handmade quilts were presented to Hosparus Health that day, along with a surprise for Gerry: a Quilt of Valor honoring his military service to our country. We congratulate Gerry and thank him and all our Veteran Volunteers for their continued service!

YOUR SPIRITUAL CONNECTION

Chaplain’s Corner A Real Blessing

By: S. Adam Standiford, Chaplain HLSW

Hospice work is hard work – but it is good work. I trust that most of us have been told “your job must be so hard… I could never do what you do.” Of course, it is hard, but having the responsibility of caring for others when they are at the most vulnerable point of their lives is a beautiful and humbling task. We clean, medicate, instruct, affirm, listen, advocate, and – above all – love the patients and families we are assigned. Yet there are times when we are not at our best, when we are worn out, irritated, offended, and disappointed by things within our work or home lives that make being all the things we commit to and strive towards almost impossible with the time and energy we have. Who is our nurse? Our CNA? Our administrator? Our chaplain? Who is the one coming in to the office caring for us or meeting us in the field when we are in our vulnerable points in life? Henri Nouwen, after living a rather successful life as a priest, writer, and professor, left his position on staff at Harvard burnt out and went looking for a new direction. It was in the L’Arche community of Trosly-Breuil, France, an intentional community that welcomed people with disabilities, that Nouwen spent a year finding a new way of living. The beauty that came from serving with that community led him to accept a position at another L’Arche community at a place called Daybreak, near Toronto. Once, one of his residents asked

him for a blessing. Nouwen offered her something he had memorized and recited many times before, something she had surely heard him tell others, maybe herself. She rejected it, telling him she wanted a real blessing, something from the heart. Later that night with the other residents gathered, Nouwen brought her forward and gave her a real blessing by reminding her that despite all that has been going on in her life, how hard it was sometimes to carry on with daily tasks or to be nice to everyone in the community, she was still special and someone worthy of love. For her, this was a real blessing. In turn, each of the residents and staff all came forward for their own blessings because each of them deep down wanted to know that they were special and worthy of love. Friends and colleagues, know that you are special and that you are worthy of love. The work you do and the care you give to the patients, families, and team members you share tasks with is appreciated and felt. May each of us as team members in this organization join one another in sharing this life, this hard work, this good work as palliative and hospice caregivers. And when you are not at your best, when you are worn out, irritated, offended, and disappointed, may someone on your team receive you and remind you that are not alone and someone cares.

“The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing... not healing, not curing... that is a friend who cares.” Henri Nouwen

Slip/Trip/Fall Prevention Did you know that slip/trip/fall injuries are one of the leading causes of work-related injuries at Hosparus Health? Here are a few tips to prevent slip/trip/fall injuries in your work environment: 1) Wear appropriate footwear. Don’t forget about Shoes for Crews – a payroll deducted program for employees to purchase slip resistant shoes.Contact HR for more information. 2) Slow down & be aware of your surroundings. This includes clutter on the floor, spills, uneven surfaces, rain, ice, snow, cords, and wires.

ADP has an organizational chart that provides a plethora of information such as: titles, hierarchy of employees, office location, and photos of employees.

Need to find it? • Log in to ADP • On the home screen, in the upper right hand corner there’s a search box. • Start typing the employee’s first or last name. • When their name appears, hit the arrow to the right of it. • Next, hit the org chart sign in the box (see photo below).

3) Adjust your walking stride to a pace suitable to the walking surface. For example, walk slowly and take shorter steps when walking on ice/snow.

BlogHeartbeat Hosparus Health Takes the Lead in Starting Difficult Conversations Advance healthcare planning relieves the burden of decision-making during precious moments. By: Phil Marshall, President and CEO Aging care is in the spotlight, and for good reason. Every day, 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 years old, and up to 85 percent of them are living with at least one serious illness. With the over-65 population expected to double by 2050, the healthcare landscape must adapt to this influx of older Americans who demand better care.

and families who have an advance directive in place can make the most of the time they have left together. Advance healthcare planning relieves the burden of decision-making during those precious moments.

Local healthcare leaders are listening. I’m proud to have helped form the Louisville Healthcare CEO Council in 2017 to leverage the collective influence of the area’s top healthcare CEOs to improve the healthcare economy of our region. LHCC’s major initiative is to focus on aging care innovation. Also launched last year, the Thrive Innovation Center is a technology innovation and education center designed to enhance the quality of life for those over age 50. And on May 17, the Health Enterprises Network is hosting Converge Louisville, a full-day conference designed to highlight Louisville as the nation’s epicenter for advances in aging care.

You don’t have to take our word for it. It’s not only organizations like ours sounding the bell for advance care planning, it’s become a movement. National Healthcare Decisions Week (NHDW), observed from April 16-22, is a collaborative effort of national, state and community organizations like Hosparus Health that are committed to inspiring, educating and empowering the public and providers about the importance of healthcare decision-making.

The emerging healthcare needs of the aging population mean that having difficult conversations about advance care planning is more important than ever. According to a recent Kaiser Family Foundation report, 98% of Americans surveyed believe it’s important to have their wishes for medical care in writing, but only 34% have any such document. Statistics like these demonstrate how it important it is for both individuals and organizations to embrace end-of-life planning. Talking about death is uncomfortable. We understand that. But accidents and serious illness can happen to anyone at any time, so it’s vital that everyone discuss and document their healthcare wishes in an advance directive (also called a living will) BEFORE they find themselves in a crisis. We’ve seen firsthand the emotional stress it places on families whose loved ones come to us for hospice care without a plan for end-oflife care. We’ve found that patients

16

It’s important to note that advance care planning is not just about deciding what care a person does or does not want. It’s about outlining one’s values, identifying care preferences and selecting a designated representative to make healthcare decisions if patients are unable to speak for themselves. In fact, starting the conversation about advance care planning is so critical to one’s plan of care that Medicare offers reimbursement to physicians who consult with their patients about this type of planning. It’s up to all of us to take control of our healthcare, and one way to do that is to make our wishes known.
