Our doctors posing for a TOPS magazine article “Meet the Doctors” featuring their work at Hosparus Health
From the CEO...
You might not be able to tell from the hot temperatures, but summertime is winding down. Many of us are fresh off vacation, and our children are heading back to school. But the important work we do at Hosparus Health never stops. I’m so proud of our many accomplishments you’ll read about in this edition of the Heartbeat. You’ll see some well-deserved promotions and recognition for both individual team members and our organization, like our Level 3 We Honor Veterans certification and our advocacy efforts on important legislation that directly impacts our patients and families. Thanks to everyone who put in the hard work to make them happen!
of family fun for staff at the Louisville Zoo on October 20th. Our two biggest fundraising events will be here before you know it, with Dancing with our Southern Indiana Stars on September 11th and our signature Candle Glow Gala on December 1st. And we’re already planning for 2019, starting with the first of our department budget meetings. I have no doubt it will be our best year yet. I encourage you all to relax, recharge and soak up the last moments of summer fun while you can. Exciting (and busy) times are ahead for Hosparus Health! Phil Marshall
We’re gearing up for a jam-packed fall and winter, with our next global meeting set for August 28th, a special day

CorporateHeartbeat Cyber Security & HIPAA
We have recently implemented a cyber security awareness training and simulated email phishing platform solution from KnowBe4. Even with all of the security technology and services we have protecting our infrastructure and systems we still remain vulnerable to old-fashioned manipulation and human error via social engineering. You will begin to receive weekly emails from the ‘Hosparus Health Security Team SecurityTips@KnowBe4.com’ regarding HIPAA, PCI and Security Hints and Tips, Scam of the Week, etc. Please take a moment to read them. It is very important for us to perform these tests and training for our HIPAA Assessments/Audits and Joint Commission re-accreditation that shows we are actively educating and testing our end users on cyber threats and protecting our data and systems. In addition to our cyber security, it is also important to remember to protect our patients information (PHI) and follow HIPAA rules, especially where technology is concerned. Here are a few tips for cyber security and HIPAA safety that were covered recently:
Do not take any pictures of patients, documents, or other PHI - Patient’s PHI can be intercepted from mobile devices creating a possible HIPAA breach, fines, or criminal prosecution.
Ti p # 2 Post-its are not for Passwords - Do you keep a login and password written down on a Post-it or piece of paper near your desk? If so, you should get rid of it by following your company’s sensitive document disposal policy. If your company does not have such a policy, you should use a paper shredder to dispose of the Post-it. Do not simply place the Post-it in the trash.
T ip # 3
Be aware of mobile phishing - Users are three times more likely to click on a suspicious link on their mobile device than on a desktop, and the bad guys are taking advantage of this. They will send you malicious links through email, social media (Facebook messenger), and text messages. If you’re using your mobile device and receive a suspicious message, or you cannot see where a link is taking you, don’t click!

Hosparus Health Achieves We Honor Veterans Level 3 Partner We are thrilled to have achieved Level 3 for the We Honor Veteran’s partnership! We have the goal to be a Level 4 by the end of 2018, and are right on track! Do YOU know all the ways we help veteran patients? At Hosparus Health we honor our veterans by: • Placing a flag magnet on the doorpost of their HICC room • Providing appropriate-sized American flags that are placed in a flower vase to help decorate their HICC room. • Having patriotic or branch specific prayer blankets that are given to each patient, and the families can keep this upon the passing of the veteran patient. • Recognizing each veteran for their service through a presentation of a “We Honor Veterans” certificate that is usually presented by one of our veteran volunteers. • Matching veteran volunteers to veteran patients.

Big Changes for Your Ideas: Introducing the Funding Request Review Committee Hosparus Health has a community of employees so dedicated to our mission that we are constantly receiving new ideas for innovation and programming. We LOVE new opportunities to better our care and further our mission; however most new projects come with a cost that must be approved by our organization. We have initiated a new process to more effectively approve and fund the projects you all care so deeply about. Now, when you have a moment of inspiration, your ideas will get full consideration by a committee dedicated to making your ideas a reality. YOUR SPIRITUAL CONNECTION
Chaplain’s Corner An Everyday Gift
By: Rev. Beth Causey, M.Div., Chaplain
People are dying all around us every day - some slowly, some very quickly. Often, families get along but some don’t, and we plop down right in the middle of ground zero. Our own families are struggling - with lack of time, with busy kids, with silence at home.
used in a sentence was, “I can hardly express the joy I felt at seeing her again.”
Often, we speak about what an honor it is to be invited into the homes of patients and families. But what is “honor?” What does it mean? How can that meaning help us cope?
Joy isn’t like happiness, which is based upon happenings, or whether things are going well or not. No, joy remains even amidst the suffering. Joy is not happiness. Joy is an emotion that’s acquired by the anticipation, acquisition or even the expectation of something great or wonderful.
One definition of honor uses the synonyms “privilege,” “pleasure,” “pride,” even “joy.” It’s easy to see us say “It’s my pleasure,” or “It’s my privilege,” or “I find pride in my work.” But, how often do we use “joy” when we speak of the work we do? I like using the dictionary, so I looked up “joy” and one of the ways it was
6
I don’t know about you, but I never made the jump from “It’s an honor” to “I can hardly express the joy I felt at seeing her again.” But, really, it’s a small jump.
Something great or wonderful. Ah, now I can see the jump! It’s a joy to see her again because she is a gift to my life - a gift because she gives me the opportunity to walk into her house, her room, and experience something great or wonderful: a human being giving me her vulnerability and trust. That, indeed, is a precious gift. So, next time you’re wondering, “Why am I doing this?” Remember: “I can hardly express the joy I felt at seeing her again.” It’s a precious gift to be a part of these folks’ lives. Joy; a gift we get every day.

The Quality Patient Round tool was developed in 2009 in response to patient care issues identified in our Joint Commission survey earlier that year. The tool incorporates criteria used by the Joint Commission for assessing the quality of patient care during a visit. These criteria were based on best practices to address the safety, well-being and needs of our patients and families.

In 2009-2012 we conducted 70 QPR visits each month (840/year). Utilizing this process we experienced a significantly improved accreditation survey in November 2012 and 2015. The surveyors conducted five tracer visits in addition to visiting our inpatient center and stated they were “very impressed with care and services being provided.”

On June 1st we launched an electronic version of the QPR to increase efficiency and provide improved reporting analytics. The visit design goal for QPR completion is 1 QPR every 6 months for all full time nurses, chaplains and social workers. PRN nurses, chaplains, social workers and on call nurses and chaplains will have one QPR visit every year.
There are many benefits to working at Hosparus Health, take a look at a few:

Tracer methodology is an integral part of The Joint Commission’s on-site accreditation survey process. Surveyors use this process to evaluate the care of an individual and to evaluate a specific care process (i.e. medication management, infection control).
Please work with your community director to schedule the personal time with your manager if you are due for a QPR.

AdvocacyHeartbeat Budget Success: Johnson Ammendment Remains Safe The United States Senate passed its version of a $154.2 billion, four-bill fiscal 2019 spending package with broad bipartisan support. The legislation does not include the anti-Johnson amendment language adopted in the House-passed bill. That House provision would effectively prohibit the IRS from enforcing the Johnson Amendment against churches for even the most egregious violations. It would be the first step in the erosion of the critical Johnson Amendment, which protects nonprofits from undue partisan influence and burden. We are thrilled the Senate has passed a clean spending bill, allowing us to continue our mission without the damaging threat of partisan politics. Nonprofits should be free to pursue their message without navigating a political minefield. We are grateful to Senators McConnell and Paul of Kentucky and Senators Donnelly and Young of Indiana for always taking the time to listen to our concerns. We were heard on this issue! The two bills will now head to conference committee to be unified.
Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act (PCHETA) Passes Out of The House of Representatives! PCHETA passed out of the House last week! The bipartisan bill will expand patient access to a reliable, well-trained palliative care workforce, insuring that those suffering from chronic illness will receive the care they need. Among other programs, the legislation will: • fund programs to provide clinical palliative medicine training in a variety of settings, including hospice • establish a program to enable hospice and palliative physicians to train teams of interdisciplinary healthcare professionals in palliative and hospice care techniques • expand the types of professionals trained to provide hospice care, including nurses and clinical social workers See our major players and next steps for this bill in the photo to the right.

BlogHeartbeat Why Cultural Sensitivity Matters By: Bob Mueller, CFRE, STM, Senior Vice President of Development
Facing conditions we would like to change, letting go of people we wish were different, takes growth, patience, and tolerance. We’re so easily enticed into thinking we’d be happier, “If only they’d change,” or “If I had a better job,” or “If the kids would settle down.” Yet we carry the seed of happiness within us every moment. Learning tolerance and being culturally sensitive for all conditions will nurture that seed.
Cultural insensitivity is saying, “People need to adapt to my way of life.” Cultural blindness is thinking that everybody’s the same. Cultural competency means respect for diversity and being willing to make adaptation in order to provide effective resources. We are culturally enriched when we have learned the ability to give and receive, to accept other cultures and share our own culture. Two life-changing cultural experiences have certainly transformed my life. The first experience was years ago when I served as seminarian, deacon and associate pastor in the 1970s at St. Augustine’s Church in Louisville, the first African American Catholic church in Kentucky. During those years, I lived with other priests from Uganda and Ghana. I learned so much living outside my normal comfort level and was exposed to new ways of viewing life and developed a respect for diversity at all levels. The second experience happened in the ‘90s during the AIDS crisis when I served as a volunteer chaplain for Hosparus Health at Glade House on Sixth Street in Louisville. At that time, Hosparus Health had a hospice inpatient unit there as many men were living and dying
16
with the AIDS virus. My role was to make the end of life as positive an experience for these gentlemen as possible and simply to accept them for who they were. Once again my sensitivities stretched as I reached out to the LGTBQ community in need. I was there at the time of their death, grieved with their families, and celebrated their lives at the funeral service. I have learned first-hand that tolerance of others opens many doors, for them and for us. It nurtures the soul, ours and theirs. It breeds happiness. It is a sign of our love to respect others’ right to choose for themselves, even to make choices we may not agree with. Perhaps a brother or sister likes music we hate, or a son or daughter wants to wear an unusual style of clothing. How often do we, in the name of love, try to force our choices on others? When we give the gift of letting loved ones choose what is right for them, it strengthens our ability to choose what is right for us. We are each in the midst of our own unique lives, and our choices are based on our own experiences, so it’s only natural that they all be different. One of us may choose to go to jail for protesting nuclear weapons; another may choose to pray for peace. Both are working for the same goal. There are so many eyes I’ll look into today that don’t know love. I will give some away with unconditional tolerance. It’s a gift – to me and to others.
