The Kourageous Kids team held their annual Fishing Trip in Frankfort this month.

From the CEO...

The sunshine is blazing and travel season is upon us! Just a reminder, please stay hydrated when you are out and about in this hot summer weather, whether in town or on vacation. We are no good to our patients and families if we don’t take proper care of ourselves. Along with the temperatures, our efforts to connect with more patients and families continues to intensify. Outreach has put their feet on the street at tons of events over the past month, from health fairs to 5Ks to community festivals. Our Ambassador program continues to grow, and HR is hard at work right-sizing our team to make sure we’re there for those who need us most. Development is gearing up for our two biggest fundraisers, Dancing With Our Southern Indiana Stars (DWOSIS) and the Candle Glow Gala. I got a chance to meet with our newest crop of celebrity dancers at the

DWOSIS kickoff event a couple weeks ago, and they are so enthusiastic and engaged. It’s sure to be one of our best events ever! The executive team is focusing our efforts on ensuring we all have the right tools to excel. I want to reiterate that our decision to delay updates to Suncoast is part of a larger strategy to guarantee the long-term health and success of our organization. We’ll keep you informed of this and any other operational decisions as they happen. In the meantime, I know you’re all staying focused on our goals. But make sure you take breaks to cool off and enjoy time with friends and family this summer, too! Phil Marshall

Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC)- NEW!

Hosparus Health re-evaluated the decision to implement Version 8 and determined that continuing to move forward with Version 8 is not in the best interest of our staff and the organization. The preparation on our end has been successful. Our Informatics Team of Cori Wallace, Brittany Becerra and Tammy Jones began super-user training last week, which has gone very well. Over the past several months Cori did a tremendous job designing forms that aligned to our processes and work-flows. Our concerns and ultimate decision to not go forward with Version 8 are solely based on continued concerns with the Suncoast system we currently use, and those concerns have increased over the past few weeks as we get closer to implementing V8, and concerns over resources and efficiency. The executive team takes this decision very seriously, and regret that we do not have the confidence in the SunCoast product to move forward with Version 8 implementation and that we were not able to make this decision sooner, but we wanted to make sure we were able to make the right decision.

Hosparus Health is starting a Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC) and they need your help. This council will help influence and improve the quality of care that we provide through family member participation. These individuals may have been very pleased with the care, or had concerns—we know there is value in hearing from both types of family members. Do you have a family member of a previous patient that would be a great voice on this council? If you have someone to recommend for the PFAC please email their name and phone number to Amy Hill, amyhill@hosparus.org.

Read the full statement here. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Questions? Contact Casey Stallsmith, cstallsmith@hosparus.org, or Cori Wallace, cwallace@hosparus.org.

Chaplain’s Corner Changing Roles: Shining the Spotlight on Male Caregivers By: Tom Miller-Price, Chaplain

My experience as a Hosparus Health chaplain has significantly reinforced something I have known for quite a while: men can be very able and competent caregivers, professionally, and as family members. Recently, I have witnessed caregiving by two different men, each husbands of patients that I worked with. The husbands, whom I will call Joe and Bill, moved me by their love, and in the way their love translated into caring for the needs of their wives. Both of the women had a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. They had each reached a point where they were more childlike, which is common in the course of the disease progression. If an adult son or daughter is caring for a parent with Alzheimer’s, at some point they find that the roles have reversed and they have become the parent. It is a transition that is difficult to make for all involved. When the caregiver is the spouse, the same role shift can happen but often in a different and more complicated way. I have had a number of wives of Alzheimer’s patients say, “I want my husband back.” A few husbands make similar comments. Their love may not necessarily diminish, but any sense of spousal love often does. One wife actually told me that she could not feel intimate about her husband because he was like a child to her. I have experienced this reaction before and I have often normalized the feelings for spouses. Joe and Bill stand out from the norm. They possibly felt some of the parent-child dynamics, but they did not allow these feelings to negatively impact their caregiving. Each one always spoke about their wives and to their wives as adults. They treated their wives with the utmost dignity. Neither man was “too big” to recognize and ask for help.

Whether the help came from family, or the Hosparus Health team, it was always clear that they were the primary caregivers. Neither man asked for help to get someone to do something he did not want to do. Each one took care of their wives’ personal care needs. These husbands asked for help because they recognized their limits. Joe’s wife could still converse, from the first time I saw her until a couple of days before she died. Joe was very observant of his wife’s behaviors and symptoms. When he saw changes, he was proactive by giving the appropriate medication, giving her food, or whatever it was that might need to be done. What impressed me most about Joe was that he was so intentional to include her in conversations. He used the word “we” when speaking to and with her. This clearly gave his wife a sense of their togetherness and their bond of love. They were a team. Even husbands and wives without health issues can resort to “parent-child banter.” I never witnessed this from Joe. Bill’s wife could only speak a word or two, and rarely. She slept most of the time. Bill always talked about his wife as if he were still completely in love with her. Until the last week of her life, he would say to me, “she still knows how to kiss.” Like Joe, Bill never talked in a condescending way to his wife. I never heard him say anything about her that he could not have said to her if she still had full awareness. He believed she was a gift from God, and he always treated her that way. Joe and Bill are two of the best examples not only of male caregivers, but of caregivers period. They are shining lights on a role that for too long has been assigned to women much more often than to men. Caregiving roles are changing and as that happens, it is for the benefit of all.

BlogHeartbeat Men’s Grief: Tips to Coping with Loss By: Jeff Meyer, Counselor

Do men and women grieve differently? It’s a question that arises from time to time. The answer seems to be yes and no. Men and women appear to experience many of the same thoughts and feelings in their grief processes. The difference seems to be related to how they express these thoughts and feelings. Although there are various causes to this difference in expression, it’s still important to cope with one’s grief in a healthy way. Here are some tips for men grieving the loss of a loved one: • Take good care of yourself – • Get proper exercise, nutrition, and sleep, and see your doctor. • Don’t isolate – It’s okay to be alone sometimes, but understand that you are not alone in your grief.

• Find someone you feel comfortable talking to – One of the toughest parts of grief for men is the feeling of vulnerability. It’s important to find someone with whom to be open and share your story. • Let yourself feel the feelings – It’s okay to feel any emotion in your grief process. Contrary to popular clichés, men do feel more emotions than happy, angry, and hungry! • Find a focus for the energy of your grief – It can be helpful to connect grief work to a project (planting a tree, making a memory book, a home project, helping others etc.). • Find meaningful ways to stay connected to the deceased – Talk to your loved one, write them a letter, go to a place you both enjoyed, spend time with your shared memories. • Don’t be afraid to enjoy yourself – Occasionally a grieving man will catch himself having fun; don’t feel guilty about enjoying your life in the absence of your loved one. • Get help from a professional – There are counselors and support groups that can help. Some focus on the relationship you shared with your loved one, whereas others are just for men grieving. Grief is a universal human experience, man or woman, and at all ages. It is the process by which we heal after a loss. There is no one correct methods or steps to grieve, and the only wrong way is to refuse to do it. Just remember that you’ve made it through every day so far.
