Heartbeat March | 2018
From the CEO...
I’m so proud to see how each of you have embraced our goal to serve more patients longer. It’s exciting to see the results of your efforts as we begin to roll out subWIG projects like our Ambassador Program, Heart ConnectionSM and our new nursing home outreach piece, not to mention all the hard work that went into achieving Level Two Hospice Partner status in the national We Honor Veterans program. A huge thanks to everyone who played a role in developing and executing these programs! At the same time we’re launching new programs, we’re looking at where our core services can make the biggest impact. While there is certainly a need for our services throughout Kentucky and Indiana, we believe we can do the most good — and help the most people— right now in our current markets. We’re continuing to explore growth opportunities outside our area, but we’ve decided to delay additional expansion for up to one year.

Instead, we will devote our energy to driving growth in our current footprint while concentrating on improving the quality and scope of our care for all our patients and families, and as importantly, our processes and work flow. We couldn’t do any of this without the most dedicated missiondriven team in the country. Not only are we focusing on improving the quality of life for our patients, we are exploring ways to enhance quality of life for our greatest asset — our employees. We are looking at how we can expand clinical teams to maximize opportunities to deliver care at the bedside, all the while remaining the “best in class” hospice and palliative care provider. Stay tuned for more good news as we continue to crush our goals and improve our processes in 2018! -Phil Marshall

Feeling the Love from Volunteers! We had a few groups make Valentine’s Day cards for some of our patients this year. Pictured below: UofL Medical students making cards to drop off to our Inpatient Care Center.
Thank you Harvey Browne Quilters! The Harvey Browne Quilters donated handmade care blankets! Maggie Chilton (pictured below) came by to deliver them to Director of Volunteer Services, Laura Harbolt. We’re sure that our patients and families, especially many of our Veteran patients, will get a lot of comfort out of these special gifts!
Sensory Mitts Made by Our Own Volunteer Staff Volunteer Services is grateful to have skilled volunteer staff who regularly put together sensory mitts. The sensory mitts are given to Alzheimer, dementia, and other patients in need of stimulation. The mitt can also help occupy the patient and give respite to the caregiver. Mary Banbury, Ruth Chaffins and Sonja Fitzgerald are among the volunteer staff who have donated their supplies, time and talent to providing these special creations.

With the help of Marcy Spencer, Holly Bailey, Tamika Crowder (CNA) and our wonderful volunteer, Bill Daisey I am able to cope. Wonderful people! I love their realistic approach delivered with compassion. The program has given me a better quality life. It also alerts me to health problems before they become critical for my Mom.” -Lillian, family member of patient

Updates from Employee Health & HR
HR need a few informational items from you:
1. A good phone number and email address. We’re preparing to roll out an easy text and voice-mail alert system for inclement weather and emergency situations, and we need to know the best number to reach you. 2. For nurses, please your highest level of education. We are in the planning phases for exciting career development opportunities for nurses, and this will be an important piece of information for us.
REMINDER: Personal protective equipment must be brought into each patient visit. This is best practice. You never know when you may need it. PPE kits are available in all central supply areas. Ziplock bags for equipment exposed to pest infestations are located within the bed bug suit package. Exposed IT equipment will need to be double ziplocked bag before bringing into a Hosparus Health building. Remember to avoid exposure, store your healthcare bags on the carts, over the door hangers, door knobs. Use barriers when necessary such as the dental bib, never set equipment on upholstered surfaces.
Please make these updates yourself in ADP. Not sure how? To help you make these updates, we’re posting tip sheets with screen shots on the Home screen of ADP to guide you step by step. Updating your records should only take a few minutes, so please take

YOUR SPIRITUAL CONNECTION
Chaplain’s Corner MEMENTO MORI
By: Peggy Holthaus, Chaplain
Since the industrial revolution, our western culture has been notorious for keeping death invisible. Thankfully, this is changing. The compassionate, creative genius of Dame Cicely Saunders, foundress of the modern Hospice movement, spurred the “outing” of death over 40 years ago. Cicely worked ceaselessly to promote death as a natural and sacred part of life and to provide those who were dying with wholistic care and nurture. Her work continues to be our inspiration here at Hosparus Health. A plethora of websites, books, movies and movements exist today that continue to encourage this outing--from the WE CROAK APP (that reminds the user, 5 times a day, of the reality of death) to the resurgence of Memento Mori— and none of this is meant to be macabre. Rather, it is an invitation to live life with deeper clarity and fullness. Memento Mori (literally translated ‘remember that you, too, will die’) is an ancient contemplative practice that dates to before Socrates. Spiritual writers and philosophers across the centuries have espoused meditating on one’s death, as a reminder of the beautiful transience of human life. Death does not make life pointless, but, rather, purposeful. It is a tool to enable us to treat our time as a gift and not waste it on the trivial and vain. A simple reminder of death can bring us closer to living the life we want, if we let it. Privileged to be a hospice worker, I am reminded of death every day. Even so, this doesn’t mean it is automatic for me to meditate on MEMENTO MORI. I’m not there yet, but I
14
want to be! If I were a monk from the middle ages, I would have a real human skull on my desk as a reminder of my mortality. If I were a little more tech savvy, I would actually know how to use the WE CROAK app that is downloaded on my phone! That being said, one simple thing that does foster the practice of MEMENTO MORI in my life right now is the colorful skeleton head sticker that hauntingly stares and grins at me from my work computer, the words ‘no regrets’ in bold print. This helps me think twice before speaking or acting. I want to live the rest of my life with as few regrets as possible. In the spirit of Memento Mori, Dr. Karen Wyatt writes, “the Way of Death teaches us to live with integrity, intuition and love. Always mindful of Death as our companion, nothing else is needed.” (THE TAO OF DEATH) Let us be grateful for all those people in our lives who teach us how to live well and die well. Carpe Diem.

BlogHeartbeat What Makes a Social Worker a Social Worker?
Hardworkers, adaptability, and compassionate craziness... to name a few By: Amy Hill, Executive Director of Psychosocial, Spiritual, and Counseling Services What Makes a Social Worker a Social Worker? When people ask me what I do for a living, I always respond, “I am a social worker.” Over the years, I could have responded, with many other answers — therapist, counselor, administrator. However, for all the roles I played, I always identified as a social worker. My friends and family know that I always say becoming a social worker was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. By choosing social work in my 20s, I have been able to fulfill a passion for helping others and effect change; developing clinical skills that have assisted individuals in psychiatric distress, and now leading clinicians while using my social work skills to advocate and support my team. When I could have gone into anything, the field of social work just felt right. I have tried to pinpoint how I knew I was a social worker. In my 17 years as a social worker, I have realized that there is a certain type of person who becomes a social worker. Social workers, in my past experience, and certainly at Hosparus Health, embody certain positive qualities that can change the world. • There is a “can do” spirit with social workers. • There is a roll up your sleeves and get the job done attitude with social workers. • There is an ability to wear multiple hats and still make a client feel like you have got it all together when maybe you are hanging on by a thread. • There is empathy and a vulnerability to connect with clients that social workers have. • There is an outspokenness to social workers. • There is a passion for being heard and advocating for what is right and for their patients.
16
In four words, these are my people! I have asked the social workers at Hosparus Health to share what they believe makes a social worker a social worker, and this word cloud sums it up clearly. We are so lucky to have more than 30 social workers at Hosparus Health, and these words describe them better than I ever could. For those who haven’t met me yet, my name is Amy Hill. I am the Executive Director of Psychosocial, Spiritual, and Counseling Services with Hosparus Health and I AM A SOCIAL WORKER.
