From the CEO...

Hosparus Health was proud to be a sponsor of the first-ever full-day conference on aging care innovation on May 17, Converge Louisville. One of the key themes of this landmark event was how we, as a community, can do a better job of delivering care to the growing aging population. We all agreed that we can’t rest on our laurels, and must continually stoke the fires of innovation.

referred to as Hosparus Health Louisville Southeast, HL-SE (read more on page 2).

We do this at Hosparus Health every day. We’re always looking for new ways to better serve the evolving needs of our patients and families, staff and communities, and position ourselves for growth. A couple of our recent changes are perfect illustrations of our innovation in action: the realignment of our management structure and our decision to create a fourth Louisville community,

Along with the weather, things are certainly heating up at Hosparus Health! If you’re on the road visiting patients and families, or if you’re hitting the highway for a summer vacation, be safe. I look forward to sharing more innovative updates with you as we forge the road ahead to meet all our goals!

CorporateHeartbeat Hosparus Health on the Hill

Recently, Hosparus Health’s public policy team climbed Capitol Hill for two days to pound the pavement and meet with our federal delegation. Senior Vice President/Chief External Affairs Officer, Gwen Cooper and Government Affairs Liaison, Amelia McClure, had an agenda ranging from nursing-home quality ratings to safe disposal of opioids. They sat down for thirteen meetings with our Senators and Representatives from Kentucky and Indiana. They were very encouraged by their conversations (our issues were certainly on the forefront of many lawmakers’ minds) and will continue to shape the national conversation on advancing innovation in health care!

Management Structure Revisions To meet the evolving needs of our patients and families, staff, and communities, and to position the organization for future growth, I am pleased to announce that Hosparus Health is adapting our management structure. The revised structure aligns positions to focus on important goals. I believe these changes support our need to respond quickly to challenges in healthcare’s dynamic and fast changing environment. Thank you to those individuals directly impacted by these revisions, especially for your willingness to adapt and support change. I appreciate everyone’s patience as we make these transitions, which will be effective with the pay period beginning on June 6, 2018. -Phil

We would like to request your assistance in developing a list of staff members who could be a good fit in facilitating an EOS visit in each community. As we continue to serve more patients and families who need our care, your assistance in building this list is much appreciated and would allow us to better meet our current census and continued growth. Have a person in mind? Email Kristi Jackson who can add them on the HUB.

The Heart Connection team would like to thank you for your support in the development of the program and for your continued dedication to the patients we serve. Please contact Stephanie Alvey Banks with any questions, 502-814-5419 or salvey@hosparus.org.

We Honor Veterans:

Thank you to everyone who hae entered veteran-related community outreach, events and activities to the spreadsheet on the HUB! We are beginning to see just how much great work staff in our organization does in support of our veterans. Please continue to document these activities on the HUB or submit them to your outreach or volunteer manager.

EOS (Explanation of Services):

The EOS group is thrilled to announce the completion of EOS in a nutshell training! In the last month, our project team has presented and equipped our leadership staff with tools to provide an EOS in the community.

Suncoast Version 8:

Due to the discovery of additional features of the software, and the redesign work that needs to happen, we are changing our Suncoast Version 8 Go-live date from July 23, 2018 to August 27, 2018. All of the Super-User and End-User trainings will be rescheduled and you will be hearing more on new dates soon. We recognize and appreciate that many of you made changes to your work and personal schedules to accommodate the May-July trainings and pushing back the date will mean more shuffling and flexibility. While we regret this delay, we strongly believe that taking the extra time now to update and refine the process is critically important to ensure our long-term success.

We are pleased to hear that many have shared this training and resources with their teams-thank you! It’s imperative that all staff have a comfort level in explaining the multiple support programs Hosparus Health offers to adult and pediatric patients and their families. If you have not had a chance to share with your staff, please do so.

Managers - if any of your nurse Super-Users originally scheduled for training on May 8th happen to be off between now and then, please contact them to ensure they are aware of this change.

In other good news, all the EOS resources are now available on the HUB. It is located under Marketing (left hand side) → EOS (left hand side) → EOS folder.

Questions about Suncoast Version 8? Contact Casey Stallsmith, cstallsmith@hosparus.org, or Cori Wallace, cwallace@hosparus.org.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Shepherd’s Hospice Donations Since 2010, Hosparus Health has been in partnership with The Shepherd’s Hospice in Sierra Leone. The Shepherd’s Hospice; the only hospice organization in Sierra Leone, provides direct patient care through a multidisciplinary team approach to treat pain and other distressing symptoms. The care targets persons with chronic diseases such as cancer, HIV /AIDS, TB and among others. This direct service delivery and the accompanying education program benefit a population of over 1.8 million people. In 2016, Hosparus Health shipped ten tons of much needed medical supplies to the Shepherd’s Hospice. Most recently, we sent a check for $11,000 to fund their mission. 55% of that check came directly from generous Hosparus Health employees, most giving only a few dollars a pay check. This money was also supplemented with money earned from the Kroger Rewards program and funds also contributed from Hosparus Health.

Thank you to the employees who donate each paycheck to our friends at the Shepherd’s Hospice!

YOUR SPIRITUAL CONNECTION

Chaplain’s Corner We Make a Difference By: Rev. Kim Tribolet, Chaplain

My last visit with my patient, Mark, was on a Thursday afternoon. It was a time of sadness and discovery. Earlier in the day, Mark’s nurse had to tell him that he was getting worse, and his prognosis was down to days. He was shocked by this. How could he be dying? He was finally feeling better. Mark was scared. He was not ready to die. I asked him, “Why are you afraid of dying?” and listened as he shared his fears. He wanted more time to tell people how much he cared about them. He wanted to make a difference and he had more to do before he died. I was surprised to hear these fears from him. Over the past week, I had observed many people expressing their love and gratitude for him. I shared these observations with Mark. The Sunday before my visit, Mark celebrated 40 years of sobriety. Many friends stopped by to celebrate this great accomplishment with him. They came because they cared for Mark and because he had cared for them as they struggled with their own sobriety. He didn’t realize it but he had made a difference in their lives and was an inspiration to all of them.

On my visit Thursday afternoon, Mark was surrounded by his two daughters. They told him over and over how much they loved him. His daughters shared stories about their childhood mischief and their dad’s reaction. The stories were reminders of how much their dad loved them. I held Mark’s hand and said to him, “These stories are a testament to how much you have cared for others. Your friends have visited this week, your family is here now because they love you, and they care about you. They care because you cared for them. Mark, you made a difference for many, and you continue to make a difference.” As I drove away from that visit, I reflected on Mark’s fear of dying without making a difference. I thought, “isn’t this what we all want, to make a difference?” Mark died two days later. Monday morning, I checked on Mark’s nurse. She mentioned she was sad and exhausted but would not have had it any other way. She said, “My job as a Hosparus Health nurse is exhausting and I have days that are heartbreaking, but at the end of the day I know I am appreciated.” To all Hosparus staff: Whether you are in the field caring for patients directly, or in the office working with administration, finance, human resources, etc., I want you to know you are appreciated. You are appreciated for the care you give and the love you share with patients, families, and your colleagues.

You make a difference!

I stopped by to visit with Mark on Monday. It was not a good day for him. He was extremely tired and slept through our visit. In the brief time I was at his house, three of his friends stopped by. They shared stories about how Mark made a difference in their lives.

The Voices on the Other End of the Line

Oftentimes, Customer Support staff (CSS) are the first voice patients and their families hear, and although they are not face-toface with them, CSS still provides compassionate care by listening and assisting with their needs. We wanted to thank them for being the voice on the other end of the line at all hours of the day and night! This poem is dedicated to you!

The Faceless Friend

By Joann Pearson, On-Call RN, HBR You could be our neighbor down the street Or a friend we have yet to meet Or the guardian angel of our many

You can tell if they are frightened by the sound of their voice And are strong for their sake

To our patients and families, you are a presence Whether it is night or day Who listens carefully to what they say And hear the things unsaid

It is you who may be the first to tell them the end is near Saying those words they never wanted to hear. You hear the sobs and even feel the tears You reach out in that crucial time of need

You calm the anxious and reassure the doubtful

For all, you are a guiding light helping their loved one at the end.

You You You You

are strength to them have become that trusted friend are not a faceless friend are the faces of Customer Support

For all these reasons, we say thank you for this important job you do. But we know It is not just a job, what makes you ....you.

BlogHeartbeat Hosparus Health Nurses Make A Difference By: Joann Pearson, On-Call RN, HBR I have folks ask me if I like my job. They say they could not do it. Let me tell you about how Hosparus Health nurses feel. You know death is not easy to accept. This applies to those dying and to all those who remain. We (Hosparus Health nurses) see this and that is some of why we do what we do. Labor and delivery nurses watch the magic of birth. We, as hospice nurses, watch the transition to heaven. You ask “How can you do this?” “Isn’t it depressing?” Yes, it can be, but the difference we make in the life and death of one person makes up for it. To see a person riddled with cancer go peacefully is our goal and it happens. To see the person with lung disease pass away without struggling for air is a blessing. It is a blessing to us that we contributed to this. Do we get “cold” to it and the death does not affect us? Far from it. We become close to the patient and the family. We grieve when they are gone along with the family but ours is perhaps different. Bonds are created that linger. Death has no age discrimination. I personally have lost a baby, a teen, a young adult, and elder persons from 60 to 98. But I know we gave our all to grant this person and their family a “peaceful passing.”

Their Hands

By: Joann Pearson

The hand may be smooth and well -manicured for a pampered wife was she. The hand may be rough and calloused for earning a living with the hands was he. The hand may be feeble and frail for many decades it has seen. The hand may be small and soft but a life to the fullest it will not see. These are all hands which reach out for comfort in their pain. These are the hands of those who are anxious and frightened for they feel the end is near.

Hosparus Health nurses are a proud bunch. We love what we do and support one another on those especially trying times.

These are the hands of those who are dying.

I love my job and feel that it is with God’s strength we are able to make a difference.

And of those who stand by crying.

We are Hosparus Health nurses and we are proud of our role in this world.
