From the CEO...

A thank you goes a long way and I will continue to tell each of you how grateful I am for the hard work and compassion you show our patients and families every day. Those of you who provide direct care to our patients and families probably hear this most, but I want each of us to understand that I, and the Executive Team, appreciate the job each of you do every day. And just as I am grateful for you, please share the same “attitude of gratitude” with your co-workers. Expressing gratitude feels good and it can certainly brighten someone’s day! This month’s issue is filled with updates and happenings that affect each of us. Please take a few minutes to read through the Heartbeat for important updates.

into four additional counties, for a total of 14 Southern Indiana counties. Recruiting and hiring are also underway, our Grief Counseling Center (GCC) Team has already provided grief education to the local Community Foundation and the office construction is about to begin. This warm welcome by the community is sure to help the referral and admission process when we officially open our doors later this summer. Stay tuned for updates and a firm “Opening” date.

We are moving along on the 1000 Building renovations. If all goes well, the 3rd floor of the 1000 Building should be fully renovated and occupied by the end of the year. There is still so much to do between now and then, including some temporary staff relocations, but progress is happening!

As always, please contact me directly with questions or concerns, and I will work hard to address them with the best resources.

Our newest office in Jasper, IN, is beginning to take shape. With the opening of this office our Southern Indiana service area will expand

It was one year ago that we launched the pilot for the Hosparus Health Heart ConnectionSM program!

The pilot program started May 2018 in the Central and Southwest Louisville communities. Because of its success the program was officially rolled out to all communities organization wide this past February. The Heart Connection program may help patients live twice as long vs. patients not enrolled in the program. Also, less than 5% of patients in the program were re-hospitalized with heart failure symptoms. For more information on the Heart Connection ProgramSM click here. Happy Birthday!

Successful Pledging for National Healthcare Decisions Day

In April we celebrated National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD, April 16th) by participating in local events in collaboration with organizations such as Baptist Health, the VA, and the University of Louisville Trager Institute. Our outreach team focused on getting referral sources to “take the pledge” and sign up for advance care planning education for their employees and/or residents. We also discussed the topic with the public, urging them to make their decisions known, and providing the resources to complete their advance care planning. It was a successful group of events, including a CME course and storytelling event at the Louisville Bards Town. We can’t wait to participate again next year to see our impact grow in the community!

J

ulie Hammond might be a familiar face to those at Hosparus Health, not only because she has been with us for nearly 20 years, but also for being the first employee to compete in our Dancing with our Southern Indiana Stars, one of our signature fundraising events, in 2017. She states, “Dancing with our Southern Indiana Stars was an interesting and fun experience and is one the top three moments in life I am most proud of!” Julie is a Referral and Admissions Coordinator (RAC) in the Southern Indiana community. “Julie shows compassion, empathy, In 2000, Julie started at Hosparus Health after working for Kindred, which was Vencor and advocates for patient and at the time. Today, her typical day includes rounding at Floyd Memorial Hospital, families. She is a team player, where she often works with the employees to assist and admit patients to our care. She dependable, and her uplifting spends the rest of her time at the Southern Indiana office and educating the community personality carries over into her into about Hosparus Health’s services. her strong work ethic.” - Co-worker Julie finds the hospice space a rewarding one, “I’ve always been comfortable with this part of life, and even look at it in a positive way.” Her view on the end of life is supported by her faith views too. She explains, “Hosparus Health, above anything, has the most integrity and outshines the competition. I love that we don’t just stop at hospice care, we are there before that stage with palliative care, and after with grief counseling." As a registered nurse (RN), it is fitting that Julie is the employee spotlight this month, as it coincides with Nurses Week, May 6-13. What she loves most about being in a nursing field is putting all the pieces together to normalize the process for people. Julie’s supervisor Kim comments, “When it comes to perfection, Julie comes to mind! She is outstanding in her role and has wonderful relationships with everyone she encounters. Julie has been instrumental in the success at HSI and I can’t imagine where we would be without her and her passion.” Outside of work, Julie is a Pure Barre fanatic and frequents the New Albany location. She lives on a lake in Pekin, IN with her husband of 23 years (Chuck), and son (Grayson). Julie also has a step-son (Brad) who lives in Louisville.

Cornerstone Module Corrections

There are corrections to two Cornerstone modules recently assigned to staff. See the corrections below. Contact the Education Department if you have any further questions. • ALL CLINICAL STAFF: In the Cornerstone Module, “Caring for the Patient with Dementia & Responding to Combative Behavior”

• ALL STAFF: There is an error in the Cornerstone module titled “Abuse, Neglect, and Mistreatment”

INCORRECT.

Correct Information Long Term Care Facilities: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) restricts the PRN use of psychotropic and antipsychotic medications, as they are widely overused in nursing homes. CMS is particularly concerned about the use of antipsychotics to sedate dementia patients who are not experiencing true psychosis. Because nursing homes interpret this rule differently, they should be consulted before any prn psychotropic medication is initiated.

YOUR SPIRITUAL CONNECTION

Practicing Peace

Chaplain’s Corner

By: Kate Pyle, Chaplain

Working in this caregiving, people-centered profession, we regularly find ourselves in the midst of chaotic, dysfunctional, and generally unpleasant situations. As time goes by, it can be difficult to not be affected personally by the negativity from these situations. But one of the things we are trying to bring our patients and families, as well as our co-workers and others, is a sense of peace. When we think of peace we think of the absence of war, violence, and hate. The peace many of us are truly seeking, for ourselves and others, is internal. It is a sense of calmness and balance. It is not being shaken or becoming defensive when confronted with a different or challenging opinion or a belief, and it is more than keeping quiet, walking away, or minding one’s own business when faced with unkindness and hatefulness. Peace responds with love, courage, and compassion. This is not always easy, and for most of us, it is not a constant state we can attain. Peace takes practice. Peace IS a practice. We are practitioners of peace. One important step in the practice of peace is learning (and remembering) to differentiate individuals from their behavior; for one’s inherent worth as a fellow human being is not determined by their beliefs, their words, or even their actions. If we want to practice peace, we must remember to channel our own feelings of anger or disdain

more constructively. Being angry about hatefulness, mistreatment, ruthlessness, and indifference can potentially be constructive, while hating those who do it is destructive. For if you have hate in your heart, you cannot practice peace. Gandhi once told the people that if they could not find love in their hearts for the British Viceroy, they should not participate in freedom walks such as the Salt March. And Jesus told his disciples: “If you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift” (Matthew 5: 23-24). It is so much easier to focus on and draw attention to all the things that “they” are doing wrong, all the ways that “they” are being awful and unkind in thought, word, or deed. But one truly does not have control over another person’s beliefs or actions, only over their own. And we must rise above the temptation to try to do so. We must instead focus on our own thoughts, words and behaviors. We must ask ourselves, often, “In saying, thinking, or doing this, am I fanning the flames of negativity and division, or am I perpetuating peace?” Let us fight the wrongs of this world by contributing to the rights of this world, for there are many. Let the peace of the Divine rule in your hearts and lead your practice, even in the face of unpleasant situations.

Chaplain becomes Published Author

Kate Anderson, HICC Chaplain, has published a book, Engaging the Sacred: Relational Spirituality as Pastoral Care, and it is now available for purchase here! The book discusses Relational Spirituality, an approach to the study of the soul that integrates psychology and theology. Kate and her colleagues created a new pastoral care framework, which focuses on the Divine Investment in each person, on their soul identities and life stories, to create meaningful engagement. Through academic discussion and personal stories, Engaging the Sacred explores not just Anderson’s framework, but also the evidence of its success.

AT T HE CORE OF OUR WORK

Volunteers Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Hosparus Health Southern Indiana has been partnering with RSVP to deliver fresh flower arrangements to our patients each week. Just since March they have helped deliver over 500 vases!

The patients and their families are so appreciative of the gift, one family member even wrote: “I just want to thank whoever is responsible for bringing my mom fresh flowers periodically. She used to garden--grow roses specifically. I know she loves flowers even though she may not verbalize it. It means a great deal to our family to know someone other than the nursing home staff is showing Mom such kindness. Thank you for this very special way, besides the normal nursing, you show my mom care and love”.

Natural Grieving vs Depression, and Where to Seek Help By: Candice Evans, LCSW, Grief Counseling Manager

Grief and depression appear similar, and sometimes happen simultaneously. It is important to recognize the differences, so someone may care for each effectively and seek the correct help. While initially intense, natural grief becomes more fluid and changes with time. Long-lasting symptoms is a discerning factor and may signal a different diagnosis. The following are simple differences between natural grieving and clinical depression:

The Grief Counseling Center is here to help patients and families through the grieving process. If a person has an appointment with our staff and show signs of clinical depression and not just natural grieving, our staff will refer them to a community health provider for services and to continue their path to healing. Adapted from Cook, Alicia Skinner and Dworkin, S., Helping the Bereaved: Harper Collins Publishers (1992) and Wolfelt, Alan D., The Depression of Grief: Companion Press (2014).
