Manhattan
Eliana Mazanillo - Certification Program Leads to Employment Inside & Outside of CITH Eliana Mazanillo set out in 2012 in search of a career and a better life. She found her stepping stone at CUNY in the Heights (CITH). Eliana enrolled and successfully completed the Dental Assistant Certificate Program. She so impressed her professor that he invite her to become part of his team as his classroom
assistant. For six years now, Eliana has greeted, assisted, tutored, mentored and cheered on the students that sit where she sat not long ago. Eliana’s success continues outside of CITH, as well. Since becoming a certified Dental Assistant, she has continually worked in her field, first at a dentist’s office and now at a local hospital. Eliana’s ambition continues to be a driving force.
“ I looked for a program to improve my career and income. I expected to find employment but I didn’t know it would be at the school. I am grateful that my professor, Angel Morales, gave me the opportunity to become part of his team, as I love my role in the classroom. Beyond that, my entire experience at CUNY in the Heights has made me the person I am now. It has been the perfect fit for me.”
In an effort to expand her knowledge of the dental field, she is now enrolled in CITH’s Dental Front Office Administration with Billing and Coding Certificate Program. With the second certification under her belt, Eliana plans on pursuing a larger role in her field. According to the staff at CITH, Eliana is considered “part of the Hostos Family.”

She successfully completed the free Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program at Hostos Division of Continuing Education in August of 2018 and received her NY State Certification in October that same year. Joanis is currently employed full-time at Black Widow Pest Control in New York City. Yet, her story does not end here. Already equipped with her OSHA 30-Hour Construction Outreach Training certification, along with 4-Hour Flagger and 4-Hour Supported
Scaffold User cards, Joanis is now enrolled in the free Hostos Carpentry Training Program. She was referred to the Carpentry Program, as well at the IPM Program, by Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO). CEO provides a roadmap for participants to achieve a long-term goal of remaining attached to the legitimate workforce and maintaining their freedom. Joanis knows that one of the biggest challenges facing women in non-traditional jobs is the lack of role models and mentors. She is taking this challenge seriously, as she becomes a mentor and tutor for the next IPM group of students.

Born and raised in the Bronx, Joanis looks forward to expanding her already big family when she marries her fiancé and becomes step-mom to her son. The future is bright for this determined Bronx native.
