STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Chafane N. Robinson was born and raised in Belize City, Belize. She is one of five siblings, born to immigrant parents who strived to give their family a better life through hard work and sacrifice. At the age of fifteen, Chafane sacrificed her own personal goals in order to give her siblings the opportunity of a higher education. In Belize, an education is a privilege with a cost that most families cannot afford. It was at that time that Chafane began to explore her options to come to the United States. Shortly after arriving to the United States, Chafane was determined to find an opportunity to revisit her childhood dream to achieve a higher education. It was the dream that she put on hold many years prior in Belize. Despite the initial barriers that Chafane faced as an undocumented immigrant when she arrived in the United States, she persevered. Even with few resources offered to immigrants, she was encouraged by the supports she received through the Young Men's Initiative and Jobs-Plus Programs. Her involvement in the Hostos Jobs-Plus Program led to the successful completion of the Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) certificate training. Chafane's ongoing dream is to continue her education and build on her skills in the health industry. Today, she is a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) and a U.S. citizen residing in the South Bronx. “I AM HOSTOS.”

The Skills To Do The Job 2018 will mark the 50th Anniversary of Eugenio Maria De Hostos Community College. As we reflect on our work in the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) and the role that we play in our community, our contributions and commitment to our students continue to be about the education and preparation for work. We engage individuals in lifelong learning activities and occupational training programs so that they may embark on a career pathway that leads them to viable employment. In this catalog, we highlight Chafane N. Robinson’s career pathway and her journey to obtaining employment as a result of participating in programs provided through the Hostos Adult Learning Center. She successfully obtained her High School Equivalency (HSE), followed by the completion of an occupational training program. Today she is a certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA). Employer partners are critical to the success of our occupational training programs. Staff from Foot Health Podiatry tell us what they think about Hostos Clinical Medical Training (CMA): “Your office will be the first place I reach out to when I’m in need of Medical Assistant staff. You should be proud that your training program continues to produce high quality candidates that obtain positions utilizing the skills they have been taught.” –Foot Health Podiatry Staff The Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development partners with local community based organizations that work with special populations, such as veterans, the formerly incarcerated and those with special needs. Partner organizations include Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO), College and Community Fellowship (CCF), Osborne Association, Access VR and the Veterans Administration. CEWD also partners with unions and their training funds. Our partnership with the 32 BJ Training Fund provides training for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), High School Equivalency (HSE), basic computer skills and a series of courses that generate certifications that are valuable to employers. The National Health Care Union 1199 partners with CEWD to retrain employees in certifications needed for the jobs of today, and tomorrow. DC37, the largest public employee union, is committed to improving their members' lives on the job as well as in their communities by providing Conversational Spanish classes and Allied Health certifications at Hostos Community College. Peter Mertens Evelyn Fernandez-Ketcham One of our goals is to facilitate the successful completion of certifications that help individuals become ready for employment.
