STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Samuel Cabassa – Starting Over at 60 Years Old When most people are thinking about retirement, New York City native Samuel Cabassa is starting his life over, personally and professionally, at the impressive age of 60. It is a familiar story with a remarkably unfamiliar ending. Imprisoned for most of his life (for over 38 years to be exact), Sammy now walks the corridors of Hostos with three certifications under his belt, and classes for a fourth commencing this Fall. All of this did not seem possible a little over a year ago when Sammy was released from prison with a $40 check and mandated to live in a men's homeless shelter. Forty-six days later, he rented a non-furnished room, relying on HRA benefits to cover one third of his rent and his daughter covering the balance for the first five months. Once SSI benefits became available, along with SNAP and survivor benefits, Sammy was able to cover all of his rent. Luck was on Sammy’s side when he ran into Kalif Hasan, an instructor at the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) at Hostos College, while at a doctor’s appointment. As Sammy tells it, Kalif was instrumental in his decision to pursue the CASAC Program at CEWD. Kalif also advised Sammy to seek the financial assistance he needed from ACCES-VR, a program offered through New York State’s Education Department, which Sammy deems immensely priceless. Sammy currently works as a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate at Bridge Back to Life Center, Inc., an outpatient addiction and counseling service. According to Sammy, Mr. Gary Butchen, Executive Director, is a supportive, magnanimously bighearted and broadminded man who gave him the opportunity to work and still have time to continue his education. Sammy always looks forward to attending his classes at CEWD. He expressed how his instructors go out of their way to ensure the success of their students with their support, knowledge and experience. He noted that he also happens to have great classmates. In fact, Sammy has paid his boss’s kindness forward by assisting three of his classmates find employment. Sammy enjoys spending his free time with his daughter and four grand kids. He says they

“ Mere words do not suffice in their entirety to genuinely convey how profoundly grateful I am to ACCES-VR, their Vocational Rehabilitative Counselor who assisted me and, to HOSTOS CEWD. Kudos to Mrs. Vermelle Van Duyne, CASAC Coordinator & Instructor, and Khalid Hasan, BS, CASAC Instructor, for providing me the opportunity to earn the below mentioned certifications and become marketable and employable in a field that I have a tremendous passion for. My success would never have reached fruition, if not for the opportunity granted by N.Y. State’s OASAS, who approved the application submitted by Bridge Back To Life, which allowed me to be hired. At my age, most people are nearing or enjoying retirement but my life is just starting. I plan on devoting the rest of my years to upholding the highest standards set forth by the OASAS, maintaining the integrity of Bridge Back To Life and helping all whom seek to uplift themselves from Alcohol and Substance Use Disorder.” Samuel Cabassa, 60 Hostos Case Management Certificate program – Fall 2018 Certified Recovery Peer Advocate, Bridge Back to Life Center, Inc. – Current Employee Hostos Credentialed Alcohol & Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) Program – May 2018 Hostos Recovery Coach Certificate Program – March 2018 Hostos HIV Counselor Certificate Program – December 2017 High School Equivalency Diploma, Clinton Correctional Facility – May 1979

Transforming Lives and Forging Futures Since 1968! As we plan for the fall semester, there is much for us to celebrate as Hostos turned 50 this year with a new tag line, “Transforming Lives and Forging Futures Since 1968!” The Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) continues to develop innovative business services strategies and provide education, training and work readiness activities. We oversee development of assessment methods, curriculum, competencies for completion, business fees for service packages and program evaluation methods. CEWD provides leadership to staff, college departments, employers, workforce development agencies, government agencies and community-based organizations in the development of program services to best serve job seekers and employers. We do so by establishing goals and engaging in strategic planning directly with business, faculty, staff and partners. We develop and implement classes to serve the needs of our students, partners and the community. Developing and managing appropriate evaluation and reporting processes to determine program success and effectiveness is key to our success. By maintaining and building relationships with business and industry, governmental agencies, community organizations and workforce development partners, we ensure quality and relevance to all our programs. More importantly, we are ensuring that our students obtain the professional certifications to advance in their careers and lives.
