Student Spotlight Nke Willehad Konge Lottery in Cameroon Leads to Tech Job When Nke Willehad Konge was selected as the winner of the Diversity Immigrant Lottery Program in his native country of Cameroon in 2010, he packed his bags and never looked back. With his win, Nke was entitled to enter the United States with automatic Green Card status to pursue his education. He began his studies by earning his Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certification in order to find work while he attended college. During this period, Nke was earning minimum wage doing minor jobs. This is when he realized that the Tech Industry is where he wanted to be and the fastest way there was to earn a CompTIA Certification, one of the most widely recognized certifications in the Industry. Still working full-time during the day as a CNA in 2017, Nke decided the time had come to register for the CompTIA A+ Certification program offered in the evenings at the Division of Continuing Education at Hostos Community College. With the assistance of Alexander Seki, the CompTIA Course Coordinator, Nke obtained a tuition payment plan for the program. Mr. Seki would prove to be an asset for this student, not only by offering the tuition payment plan, but also by steadily encouraging Nke to continue his studies during a very stressful period for him. Nke passed the exam for certification on his first attempt. He attributes this to the hands-on theory taught in class and the Cisco Networking Academy software available to the CompTIA students at Hostos. He began a three-month internship in August of 2017 at Agilant Solutions Inc., where he was hired full-time following the completion of his internship. Nke continues to build upon his tech knowledge with courses in cloud computing.

Transforming Lives and Forging Futures

“ Hostos was the right place for me. With the encouragement of the Hostos staff, a great professor and excellent equipment and software in the classroom, I acquired the skills to adequately prepare me for the Tech Industry workforce.

Continuing Education & Workforce Development

THE SKILLS

TO DO THE JOB

The staff and faculty of Continuing Education & Workforce Development (CEWD) at Hostos Community College welcome you to the Fall semester. We invite you to explore new careers, improve or refresh your current job skills, learn or become proficient in the English language or earn a High School Equivalency diploma. Helping you to meet your career goals, preparing you for the demands of today’s and tomorrow’s job market and providing pathways for improving the quality of your life is what we do best. We accomplish this through education, job training and career building classes and programs directly related to job growth in our City and State. You will discover 70+ industry certificate programs ranging from healthcare to construction and transportation to pest control. We have partnered with the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission, in response to a City mandate for more licensed taxi drivers, to provide skill-based training to individuals seeking to pass the TLC exam. CEWD will be one of only three approved training sites in the Bronx. Our Commercial Driver’s License exam qualifies individuals to fill the City’s many trucking, sanitation, delivery van and shuttle bus vacancies and MTA bus positions. Our expanded health care certifications will include a Surgical and Anesthesia Technology Program to be launched in Spring 2020. To jump-start this program, we are offering the Central Sterile Processing Program as an entrylevel training opportunity in the field. CEWD received a $500,000 grant from the NYC Workforce Development Corporation in response to the steady demand for qualified line cooks for local food service and hospitality businesses. The resulting apprenticeship training program, geared for New Yorkers, will provide technical culinary skills and professional experience in a kitchen setting, required for full-time employment as an entrylevel line cook in the food and hospitality industry. Another grant of $500,000 from CUNY’s Central Office, allowed us to initiate two additional apprenticeship programs. These programs target individuals interested in certifications in Information Technology (IT) as Computer Support Technicians and those seeking certification as Community Health Workers (CHW). To successfully roll out the IT and CHW apprenticeship programs, CEWD launched its first MTA bus and subway marketing campaign covering the metro area. Over 57 million people were reached during a four-week period. As we continue to expand our portfolio of programs in response to job market demand, we strive to enhance our support for students by providing access to hands-on experiences, job fairs, career counseling, social services, the CUNY Fatherhood Academy (CFA), referral services for veterans and their families and accommodations for individuals with disabilities. As a result, approximately 15,000 students from throughout New York City enroll in our Continuing Education programs each year. While most of our courses are not offered for college credit, many of these students continue their education by pursuing Hostos degree programs. CEWD is integral in this process. Fall is a season of change. Seize this moment. Visit our office or call us. Our team will help you realize your dreams and develop the skills to do the job. Sincerely,

Peter Mertens Interim Dean Continuing Education & Workforce Development

Evelyn Fernandez-Ketcham Executive Director Workforce Development

CEWD develops and delivers customized employee training for a variety of organizations in various industries. We welcome the opportunity for partnership!

Liberty Partnerships Hostos Community College’s Liberty Partnerships Program is a high school accredited, year-round academic and cultural enrichment program enhanced by career and support services. The program is funded by the NY State Education Department and serves over 300 students yearly from local high schools in the South Bronx. Students are comprised of all ethnic groups, primarily Latinos and African Americans. Special attention is given to students who are at-risk of graduating late or dropping out, including those with limited English proficiency. The program partners with CUNY, SUNY and several private universities along with community based organizations, cultural institutions and local businesses to form an innovative, educational collaborative united in challenging and motivating students to excel both academically and socially.
