STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Dominique Scalici: Stay-At-Home Mother Reinvents Herself Through Hostos CEWD Teacher Assistant Certification Program In 2005, Dominique Scalici graduated from Baruch College with a bachelor degree in literature and a minor in Black and Hispanic History. Fluent in five languages (English, French, Spanish, Italian and Creole), Dominique knew she would pursue her passion for education. The year 2005 proved to be a turning point for Dominique. Not only did she graduate from college, she married and received the great news shortly thereafter that she was expecting her first child. Although Dominique was a passionate educator at heart, she realized she would be sidelined for a few years but she joyfully anticipated exploring this new chapter of her life. Dedicated to her family, she became a stay-at-home mom for the first years of her son’s life. During that time, Dominique found herself organizing and leading a group of first-time moms whose focus was building their children's motor skills and education, as well as organizing child-friendly activities. After five years as a stay-at-home mom, Dominique found herself wondering what would be next for her. She decided that her experience raising her son pointed her in one direction; returning to her set-aside dream of becoming an educator. That thought was the spark that reignited her pursuit for the career as an educator. Dominique embarked on her new journey by enrolling in the Hostos Continuing Education Teacher Assistant Certificate program. After earning her Teacher Assistant Certificate in Spring 2017, she interned for Hostos Summer Academy where she completed 220 internship hours as a teacher’s aide. Tilsa Pattee, Director of the Hostos College for Kids Academy, said, “Dominique’s commitment and outstanding contribution went beyond the norm and I was excited for her future. She is amazing.” Dominique and Tilsa formed a special bond that lead Dominique to pursue a Teacher Assistant position at Hostos Children Center. A position at Hostos College followed. This was the first step of many in pursuing her dream to become an early childhood educator.

truly found my calling when I inquired about the “ Iprograms offered through Hostos Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD). CEWD help me transform myself from a stay-at-home mother to a passionate educator. My goal is to continue to climb the educator ladder and give back to the my Hostos Community. Hostos transforms lives and forges futures.
