Over 100 Certifications and Programs to Advance Your Career

Student Spotlights Bronx

Eugenia Rice Fast Forward: From the Transit Authority to VH1 Celebrity Being employed by the Metropolitan Transit Authority for the past 24 years did not impede Eugenia Rice’s desire of pursing her passion for cooking. She always knew that someday she would realize her dream. As a single mom who raised four children and put three of them through college on her MTA salary, Eugenia started looking for an affordable program to enhance her cooking skills. She discovered the Culinary Arts Certificate Program at Hostos in the Bronx, enrolled in March of 2017, and has never looked back. Two months after completing her certification, Eugenia’s life changed dramatically when she landed her dream job and was catapulted to stardom as a celebrity chef on VH1’s Black Ink, while still juggling her full-time MTA position! Though Eugenia’s clientele has expanded to include many in the entertainment industry, she continues to keep close to her roots by serving meals to those less fortunate in her Harlem community. This is a testament to her being grounded in her faith, her church and her dance ministry. “ Hostos has impacted my career in a profound way. I was able to implement, in my cooking, the skills and knowledge that I learned in class. Hostos taught me the science to cooking and gave me the understanding of the methods, temperature and flavoring, expanding my own relativity. I am very grateful to the Culinary Arts Program Coordinator, Alex Seki, our instructor, Chef Lisa and the Food Protection instructor, Danielle Allen, for their assistance, patience and teachings. The success I am experiencing is a testament to the training I received at Hostos. In two months, my life has changed dramatically and I now have the pleasure of working with some of the top celebrities in the entertainment industry” Eugenia Rice, 52 Hostos Culinary Arts Certification – July 2017 Hostos Food Protection Certification – July 2017

Claritz Marte Tejada Achieving Her Dream and Helping Her Son at the Same Time

Hoping to help others and better care for her asthmatic son, Claritz Marte Tejada was sure she wanted to pursue a career in healthcare. She enrolled in the Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) Program at CUNY in the Heights in February 2018. As an immigrant in this country for a little over 11 years, Claritz worried that the CMA Program would be challenging. With the guidance and encouragement of her instructor, she persevered and maintained exceptional grades. She received her National Healthcareer Association Certification in November 2018 and is now anticipating beginning her internship as a CMA. Thanks to the training at CUNY in the Heights, Claritz has found her focus to achieve her dream.

“ The CMA Program was an excellent experience. The instructor was always cordial, respectful, knowledgeable and most importantly, eager to help. The instructor was great. I never thought I could ever learn so much. Even after a long day and attending the CMA classes in the evening, I would go home and brag about how well I was doing in class. I was proud of myself and my accomplishments.” Claritz Marte Tejada, 25 CMA Internship – Spring/Summer 2019 Clinical Medical Assistant – June 2018

Exceptional certificate programs to select from with convenient schedules. A school backed by the credibility of an accredited and respected college. Classes taught by experienced and caring professionals.

Mr. Carlos Molina, Vice President of the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development, has announced his retirement effective this coming Spring. Under VP Molina’s leadership and guidance over the course of the past 15 years, the Division has grown from a department offering only a handful of courses and enrolling a few hundred students to a division with 12 departments reaching over 12,000 students. VP Molina led the way in the creation of CUNY in the Heights, Jobs Plus, The Allied Health Career Pipeline Program and Center for Bronx Nonprofits. Our menu of certification programs expanded from five to over 40, and in the process, we have continued to help people on their pathway to employment. A sincere thank you and congratulations to VP Molina on his successes and we wish him the best in his retirement! Change is happening. Take that step and allow us to assist and guide you as you acquire the skills to do the job, meet your career goals and change your life. Liberty Partnerships Hostos Community College’s Liberty Partnerships Program is a high school accredited, year-round academic and cultural enrichment program enhanced by career and support services.
