Student Spotlight Michael Cruz Realizing a Passion Through Hostos Something inspired Michael Cruz in 2016 when, at just 19 years old, he did an 8-month stint as a Home Health Aide. That inspiration sparked his passion for a career in the medical field. For this Brooklyn transplant who has resided in the Bronx since he was four years old, the path to attaining his goal would not be a straight one. Michael took jobs at local fast food establishments and was even employed as a manager for a particular chain, but he knew this was not where he wanted to be professionally. He left his job and his journey to becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) began. While unemployed during the Summer of 2018, Michael heard about the Allied Health Career Pipeline at the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) at Hostos, which provides free healthcare training to eligible students. Michael’s eligibility did not guarantee his acceptance into the Pipeline Program. He passed his entrance exam and his name was entered into a lottery along with other prospective students. On January 10, 2019, Michael received word that he was, in fact, selected to participate in the Pipeline Program and he began his CNA training four days later. In April 2019, Michael began working as a full-time CNA at Triboro Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in the Bronx, only one month after completing his training via the Pipeline Program. Not wanting to end his educational journey, Michael promptly enrolled at Hostos Community College in August 2019 in pursuit of an Associate of Science in Nursing. He hopes to apply for the Nursing Program after completing the program requirements.
“ Being a Pipeline student
has turned my life around for the better and has given me the opportunity to become something great. I was able to further my education and expand my horizons by not only completing the CNA program, but by enrolling in Hostos Community College to pursue a degree to become a Registered Nurse. I learned that you can achieve whatever goal you set your mind to. Everything is right there in front of you. All you have to do is grab it.

THE SKILLS
TO DO THE JOB
Welcome to the start of the Spring 2020 Semester! On behalf of the faculty, staff and students of Continuing Education & Workforce Development (CEWD) at Hostos Community College, we wish you a Happy New Year. The New Year is a time of reflection and for making resolutions to improve your lives, and spring is a time of hope, new beginnings and inspiration. If you are ready to purse your educational and employment goals, we hope you will choose to sign up for one of our programs. CEWD at Hostos has been helping individuals for over 40 years. The Hostos CEWD family takes great pride in helping its students. Over several decades, tens of thousands of students have participated in our programs, achieved success and turned their lives around. Please take the time to read our Spotlight story on Michael Cruz. Michael enrolled in the Hostos Allied Health Career Pipeline Program, an initiative of the Department of Health and Human Services - Health Profession Opportunity Grant (HPOG), and completed the Certified Nursing Assistant Program. He transitioned from CEWD and matriculated at Hostos Community College to pursue an Associate of Science in Nursing (see full story on the inside front cover). Please see page 8 to learn more about CEWD courses that allow you to earn college credits if you enroll at Hostos. At Hostos CEWD, we work to provide you with personalized attention and the support you need to succeed. Flexible class options, day, evening and weekend classes, advising, job fairs and other supports are available to you. In addition, we offer referral services to veterans and their families and individuals with disabilities. Once you complete your course, job training and/or certification, we can help you plan your next steps such as seeking employment, completing additional certifications to enhance your job opportunities or enrolling in an associate’s degree program at Hostos Community College. We encourage you to review the catalog. It is designed to help you achieve your educational goals and job training needs. There is important information about all our programs, including job training certifications, English for Speakers of Other Languages and general equivalency diploma classes, College for Kids and much more. Refer to page 10 to learn more about the CUNY Helena Rubinstein Career Success Scholarship, which partially pays for occupational training programs that help students advance in their career. Liberty Partnerships Hostos Community College’s Liberty Partnerships Program is a high school accredited, year-round academic and cultural enrichment program enhanced by career and support services. The program is funded by the NY State Education Department and serves over 300 students yearly from local high schools in the South Bronx. Students are comprised of all ethnic groups, primarily Latinos and African Americans. Special attention is given to students who are at-risk of graduating late or dropping out, including those with limited English proficiency. The program partners with CUNY, SUNY and several private universities along with community based organizations, cultural institutions and local businesses to form an innovative, educational collaborative united in challenging and motivating students to excel both academically and socially. We integrate support services and career awareness with academic disciplines, while fostering the arts with our non-academic activities. Tutoring, exam prep and college/career exploration is also available. Partnerships with Summer Youth Employment Program/Work Learn Grow provide students with real world experience on the job. In 2019, students gained valuable training and development at La Finca Del Sur, a local community farm devoted to agricultural and social justice-based work.
