Student Spotlight: Brian Walsh, 18
Brian Walsh is very candid and mature for his age. Facing legal issues, his parole officer made a recommendation that would change his life. She referred him to Exalt Youth, a non-profit that provides support in navigating the justice system, educational workshops, and paid internships. Brian secured an internship with Good Call NYC, which provides 24-hour legal support for individuals who’ve been arrested.
Last summer, Brian embarked on the Trinity Wall Street/Hostos site-safety training internship through Exalt, a month-long program that provides instruction in OSHA as well as six Department of Buildings site-safety certifications. Trinity Wall Street, the private development arm of historic Trinity Church, partnered with Exalt as a way to give justice-involved youth an opportunity to see the inner workings of property development, construction, and building management.
At 17, Brian still only saw the internship as a means to earn money. “I didn’t see it benefiting me in the future, but I was open to it.” By the end of the experience, however, it would leave a much greater impression than he could have imagined. Working in outreach within the community, Brian was quiet at first, but after educating himself on legal matters he became the outreach team's top performer, and he realized he genuinely enjoyed interacting with the public, educating the public about knowing one’s rights, navigating certain situations, and how to handle specific cases. With newfound confidence and belief in the Exalt system, Brian returned for their educational workshops where he learned about the opportunities that would open up with an OSHA certification. After reading up on it, he became more interested in the construction industry.
Besides the certification courses, Hostos CEWD provided classroom instruction in blueprint reading and basic construction management. Brian wanted to cite the two Hostos instructors, Tim Dyer and Dave Albunio, for making the courses extremely enjoyable, and helping him pass 100% of his certificate exams. Brian is currently interning for a Brooklyn-based project development firm that specializes in low-income housing. With a month left of his internship stipend remaining, he feels that he’s in a good position to gain a permanent position. He also completed his first semester at New York City College of Technology, where he is pursuing a BA in Construction Management. Of the college-level coursework, he said, “Not many people my age have an OSHA or site safety certification; when I was in a course called ‘Materials and Methods,’ I already knew the material.”

“
The Hostos instructors were great, and it was overall a positive experience. I would recommend the opportunity to anyone.”
I made some wrong choices, naive choices, but I do not regret it because it lead me to Hostos CEWD.”
THE SKILLS TO DO THE JOB
Happy New Year and Welcome to the Spring 2023 Semester
Happy New Year and welcome to the Spring 2023 semester. The Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) closed 2022 on a high note. Hostos ranked 6th among the top 22 community colleges in New York and was awarded “Best for Workforce Education” by Intelligent, a student-focused website. CEWD was recognized for its professional development courses and workforce training programs. This recognition is a testament to our commitment to provide students and the community with scholarships and no-cost programming that allow them to obtain high-quality occupational training, gain access to higher education, and transition to a good-paying job.
As part of CEWD’s continued commitment to providing students with scholarships and no-cost programming that allow them to achieve their educational and career goals, we obtained the following new grants:
u CEWD received $3 million from the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) to support our Community Health Worker Training Program Over the three-year grant period, Hostos CEWD will train 270 new and/or incumbent workers as Community Health Workers (CHWs). Trainees will have the opportunity to participate in either a CHW field placement experience or Hostos CEWD’s New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) Registered CHW Apprenticeship Program. The Hostos CHW Training Program that can be applied to their college transcript when they enroll in a Hostos degree program. Hostos CEWD’s long-term goal is to increase the number of skilled Community Health Workers locally and regionally; as well as, creating an industry “gold standard” for training CHWs. By 2025, Hostos CEWD will have trained over 550 Community Health Workers thanks to the financial support we have received from HRSA’s Bureau of Health Workforce, the Robinhood Foundation, and the Mother Cabrini Foundation.
u CEWD continues to help support New York City’s effort to recover from the pandemic. CEWD received $725,412 from The New York Community Trust as part of CUNY’s NYC Accelerated Recovery Hub. Hostos Community College and LaGuardia Community College launched the NYC Accelerated Recovery Hub to help low-income New Yorkers, particularly those
living in the Bronx and Queens, who have been upended by the COVID-19 pandemic. CEWD plans to train 200 New Yorkers over an 18-month period. CEWD is providing the following workforce training opportunities at no cost to students: Clinical Nursing Assistant, Patient Care Technician, Clinical Medical Administrative Assistant, and Medical Billing and Coding. CEWD also received an additional $828,000 from CUNY’s Center for the Future of Work to support the implementation of the NYC Accelerated Recovery Hub.
There is still time to enroll in these free training programs. Please visit CEWD’s scholarships and no-cost programs website by clicking here and then selecting the scholarships & tuition assistance programs link in our online course catalog.
